Who will do X-mas this year?

Now that WRSN is gone will the triangle have a Christmas station? 101.5 has their Xmas song of the day but I do not think they play all Xmas. Y102.9 is promoting something that shounds like a stunt. Maybe 100.7 or even 106.1?

For the triad area, it's WMAG. But, does the signal reach that far for the triangle listening area?

What if, MaJic 94.1 goes ALL X-Mas like OLDIES 93?? That would be something to discuss....

I hope it's not Y102.9 -- I think their playlist has improved lately. I heard the theme from The Rockford Files last night on there.

Don't think Gig is smart enough to do Christmas music. Plus, he'd have to spend the money to BUY the Christmas music and he probably doesn't have it.

Sure Alex, WMAG is heard very well in the Triangle. I remember when they were "Magic 99.5". Bill Flynn must be celebrating his 60th year in broadcasting by now ;)

Remember Christmas Music is no longer PC, please refer to it as "Holiday Music" ::)
An idea....Maybe "FOXY" 107/104 could devote one of their stations to some Chris..ooops! Holiday Music?

What's itgonnabe Mask...I mean Bob????????

Is there gonna be double Christmas magic/majic this year?

Tis the season for WMAG Santa hats ALREADY!!!!!!!!

Yeah, not to hijack the thread, but whatever happened there? I moved to the area in 2000, apparently some time after they dropped the "Magic" name, and I've always wondered why they did, but I've never been able to get a clear answer... or much of an answer at all.

Thanks Stephen, I guess you supplied the answer ;D Happy Holidays Stephen!
Ah, what the hell....Merry Christmas Stephen! (Take "that" PC People ;) )

I can answer the "Magic" question. At some point, a "Consultant" said that it was much more important to cement the dial position in the minds of listeners than the "Magic" name. That's when they revamped their logo and started calling themselves "99.5 WMAG". This thought process does make sense, since that's what you see in the car, BUT, the "Magic" name was so entrenched that they NEVER should have let someone else have it. Hell, I still run into people everywhere who call 99.5 "Magic". It's very confusing and one of the biggest bonehead moves in Greensboro CC history!

Alright, Stuart...I'm officially offended! The rest of y'all listen up! I don't want anyone else wishing me a Merry Christmas until AFTER Thanksgiving!!! :D

Maskman,
I agree with you. Could it also be that WSMW 98.7 and WVBZ 100.3 are so close to 99.5, that it would be helpful for people to remember just 99.5?

When I moved to Durham in 1985, WRAL was known as 101-WRAL FM. When 100.7 (WTRG) came around, they changed to 101.5 WRAL and than later MIX 101.5

I couldn't be farther from being Bob! he-he-he! You've gotta trust me on this one! Bob posts as "Manwhore"...whatever that means! I wouldn't be caught dead being Boob....I mean Bob!

MaskedMan is right! What a dumb move to let the "Magic" name go! If nothing else, use it once an hour to protect it! It would be very interesting to look at dairies to see how much confusion is there today! In doing diary reviews we used to see "magic" related to 99.5 listening reports well after it was dropped by the station.

Certainly the move to the complete digital dial position was made necessary by the advent of the digital tuner.

Also never understood why WRAL used "Mix" and didn't Capitol-ize on the heritage call letters!

Consultants don't always get it right!

Almost every time they say "Mix 101.5" it's followed by "WRAL-FM." Heck, their website is and has always been wralfm.com

I'd say that's capitalizing on the heritage!

I would like to change the thread a little...

I do not understand why Radio Stations (especially in Large Markets) would want to play Christmas Music for such a long period of time. Don't get me wrong, Christmas Music is fine. What about the folks who do not celebrate Christmas? Wouldn't the station lose a part of their audience? I was a faithful "Sunny 93.9" Listener until they started playing Christmas Music 24/7. I found "Oldies 100.7" and never returned to "Sunny".

I now listen to "Y-102.9" :'( So, I will be "shopping" for a new station ???

Maybe the SportsRadio thing at 99.9 won't work and they will go back to Classic Rock :D
What are the chances of WZZU returning? Come back Kitty Kinnen wherever you are!! ;)

Too bad none of the Curtis stations stream online; I was hoping the new Xmas station would stream like Sunny (now Kiss) did and like WRAL Mix 101.5 does.

It makes me want to barf, but the Christmas music is like gold in ratings. So many people LOVE it! I don't know who those people are, but I do have a neighbor who is a science teacher at a private school. She also has a young son, maybe 11 years old. She said it's such a wonderful family thing. They listen to it in the car, then turn it on when they get home instead of the TV. The earlier stations can start playing it, the quicker it can be effecting their ratings books. I used to look really closely at all the ratings during one of those "Christmas" books, and other station's ratings drop as their listeners tune into the station with the Christmas music. It very obviously does effect the ratings. Retailers LOVE it because they can play it in their stores and hear their ads. What I DON'T get is that agencies make the next year's buys based on those ratings! How dumb is that??? It looks to me like they'd discount that book BECAUSE of the Christmas music! I can understand them wanting to place holiday buys based on knowing more listeners will tune in, but to use those ratings for a spring buy just seems stupid to me.

Alright, this post is going way to far...Look for the X-mas music to hit the triad aiwaves on November 16th @ 5pm.
