It makes me want to barf, but the Christmas music is like gold in ratings. So many people LOVE it! I don't know who those people are, but I do have a neighbor who is a science teacher at a private school. She also has a young son, maybe 11 years old. She said it's such a wonderful family thing. They listen to it in the car, then turn it on when they get home instead of the TV. The earlier stations can start playing it, the quicker it can be effecting their ratings books. I used to look really closely at all the ratings during one of those "Christmas" books, and other station's ratings drop as their listeners tune into the station with the Christmas music. It very obviously does effect the ratings. Retailers LOVE it because they can play it in their stores and hear their ads. What I DON'T get is that agencies make the next year's buys based on those ratings! How dumb is that??? It looks to me like they'd discount that book BECAUSE of the Christmas music! I can understand them wanting to place holiday buys based on knowing more listeners will tune in, but to use those ratings for a spring buy just seems stupid to me.
