Who Will Flip to All-Christmas and When this Year?

95.5 the Fish plays Christmas music on air including the secular ones like Ruldolph. That sir is an abomination!

Then again they are both fictional characters, so I'm okay with it.

WDOK flipped to all-Christmas today at 4pm calling themselves "Christmas 102." They beat out Majic and The Fish, both of which are still in their regular formats.

Yawn, iPod time, LOL. But seriously, for the stations that are playing nothing but Christmas for a month and a half or so, that's a good chunk of time. Don't they get backlash from the music/record industry as they are failing to play new (hit) product? The stations that don't go all Christmas till close to Christmas eve, or mix regular tunes with Christmas tunes the whole time must be more respected by the record companies. I realize there's new Christmas releases every year (can hardly tell when the same 100 songs from the 40's on are always played), but does that really compete with the amount of new contemporary releases? Don't the stations who play at least some new product have an advantage when the all Christmas stations go back to their regular format, as listeners will be "in the groove" already of the not so Christmas station, grooving to the new hits the others are missing.

Stations who play "Newer" music lose. People don't have fond memories of sitting around the Christmas tree at Grandma's house listening to the Pussycat Dolls or Britney Spears belt out a Christmas song.

and ain't it funny? The ratings for all Christmas music stations are INSANE. Lite FM in New York will become the most listened radio station in America (Cume) because of Christmas Music, but only because people can't STAND listening to Christmas music.

So, in Cleveland we have WFHM (Salem Communications), WDOK (CBS) and WMJI (Clear Channel) playing all Christmas music. Makes perfect sense. One station from each multiple station owner in the market except for Radio One which, if they wanted to, could possibly put WZAK into the all-Christmas mode with an all R&B and Gospel focus.

An aside... My former OM in Raleigh (and PD at then AC WRSN), Bob Bronson, does AM drive at Lite-FM/NYC. Great guy. He's also the VO for the Aflac TV spot that airs during college football games.

Yes, Xmas music does very well in ratings. Has for over ten years when Randy Michaels essentially got the idea from a small market station in upstate NY. He couldn't believe the numbers this station was putting up between Nov-Jan. Did the research and voila'... the holiday music now launches before Halloween in some markets.
