Who will take on Rock in New York?

Top 10 18-49 isn't good enough. You've gotta be top 5 or better. If you're the 6th most listened to station in a demo, why should an agency buy that station instead of stations 1-5?

I'd also like to note that the comment about radio formerly being about ratings and now being about billing is ignoring the point of ratings: ratings were invented to show listenership to sell more ads. It's been about the money since the 20's.

It would be nice if Cumulus buys the intellectual property of WRXP and moves it to 94.7 the same day 101.9 goes to ESPN. There's a distinct possibility that both of the sales could close on the same day.

CBS should simulcast K-Rock on 101.9 for a week, then tout the fact that it can be heard on 92.3-HD2 or online. Then they'll get the WRXP listeners to sample K-Rock. Better yet, put K-Rock on 101.9-HD2 and a dance CHR on 92.3-HD2.

Why do I have a feeling that we ALL are going to get "sucker punched" and a format comes through that no one would have seen coming?

Has anyone told ESPN that they're on the move again? :p

Oops, I meant CBS.

I have noticed the WRXP are steering people to 94.3 the Shark. Me thinks the end is in sight... :(

According to the news page of Radio-Info.com, the CBS Radio LMA of 101.9 is expected to begin on November 1.
The brief article states that the sales staff was let go last Friday.

I will say this...4 different people who don't know each other and are certainly not radio people via facebook in the last 2 days posted about the upcoming flip of RXP, bemoaning the quick loss of the 'most refreshing thing to happen to radio in NYC in some time". I was rather surprised. For all the flack they've gotten since the beginning Merlin deserves some credit here. They figured the simplicity of how to do it right when the other "big guys" couldn't. It almost seems crazy someone wouldn't pick it up...almost.

The Shark is not a suitable replacement. I'm sure they won't play M83, Grouplove, Of Monsters and Men, Muse, etc...just the same old tired "active" stuff. :(

Well, then...there's always your iPod. Here's the reason rock has problems.

So I guess those who want Now FM once it's taken away should go to their iPod's? No. there are a TON of formats in NYC and NONE of them play Current Based Rock at all consistently! WE DESERVE TO HAVE ONE! EVERY OTHER MAJOR CITY HAS A ROCK STATION! WE NEED A ROCK STATION!

Why? The audience for it hates commercial radio, complains about anything and everything and is not the audience that advertisers want. And please tell me how many "Current Based Rock" albums are on the top of the Billboard charts this week or on the list of top iTunes downloads.

Hey Mark- you should really do your research before you spew hate, for which you do on all things modern rock:
Top 10 Albums
source: http://www.billboard.com/charts/billboard-200#/charts/billboard-200
1. Mumford & Sons: Babel- the number one album is a modern rock album
5. Coheed And Cambria -Afterman: Ascension
6. All Time Low: Don't Panic
10. Muse- The 2nd Law

So the fact that WRXP v2 gained one million listeners in two months, and is/was trending up in key demo's since inception, is of little concern to advertisers? I beg to differ. I'm guessing the same thing can be said for KROQ (LA) Radio 104.5 (Philly) KDGE (Dallas)... The list goes on....

As for your record sales arguement, if the music got as much exposure on the radio as Nikki Minaj (URGH), then I'd say it would do a lot better.

TONS of formats in NYC? Not really......

Let's see the FM dial......2 CHR's, 1 Classic Rock, 1 Oldies, 3 A/C, 1 Rhythmic A/C, 4 Latino, 2 Classical, 1 Caribbean leased, 1 (soon to be 2) Sports, 2 R&B/Hip-Hop, 1 Urban Adult, 1 AAA.

I may have missed some but those would be on the fringe of NYC. But let's fill the blanks (in no order so that way I don't get accused of favoritism ;) ).

1. Alternative
2. Dance/EDM
3. Country
4. Standards
5. Traffic/Weather w/o News

Just saying there seems to be repetition in some areas. We really don't have a ton of formats.

We have 1 Hot A/C (PLJ) , 2 A/Cs, 2 CHRs, 1 Rhythmic CHR, 1 Classic Rock, 1 Urban A/C, 2 Hip Hop, 2 Sports, 1 Oldies, 4 Latino, 1 Caribbean, 2 Classical (I don't know why we need this considering that 93.9 and 105.9 are the same format)
We Need:
1. Alternative
2. Country
3. Rock
4. AAA (The Peak & FUV don't count because they don't cover ALL of the market)
5.Dance (KTU should really flip to this completely like back in 96' or Now FM)

Note: PLJ is Hot A/C and very different from Lite or Fresh.

You put this format on a NYC signal and you write off 99 percent of the city's black, Asian and Hispanic populations. That's a lot of ears. You may not like Nicki Minaj, Pitbull, etc., but their songs attract listeners of all ethnicities, in the city and in the suburbs. Alternative rock doesn't cross over, and the harder it gets the more it drives off female listeners. That's a fatal combination in New York City. Country -- which also is unlikely to pop up on 94.7 because of its lack of ethnic appeal -- has a better chance of doing so because it skews female, and Madison Avenue is most comfortable selling to women.

If it's programmed like Radio 104.5 in Philly then it will gather both males & females to the format. The signal of 94.7 covers more of a less ethnically diverse area such as Upper Passaic County, Sussex, Morris, Somerset, parts of Hunterdon, you really aren't seeing the signal hit union or any of those areas. I still think Alternative over Country. Whose to say also that those who live in ethnically populated areas don't like alternative rock music? Music isn't defined by race you know.
