Why dropping "Oldies" is wrong

Chuck said:
How about a new thread? This one is getting very stale.

Just stop posting. But even if we do, this thread probably won't go away. Certainly the topic won't. Complaints about how Oldies SHOULD NOT die are about half the threads on this board. The rest are mostly some performer died or some Oldies station died. Same is true of the Standards board.

There's nothing new here to talk about.

A note to you sixties AND fifties guys: The SATELLITE radio boards welcome you. There's plenty of opportunity for "oldies" discussion over there.

oh, please

And the ones that hate oldies, leave here... great ideas!!! ;D

Get real. Because a number of us are awake to the reality of why Oldies is fading off FM stations all over the country, we must be Oldies haters?

So why does Radio-Info still have a '50s/'60s Oldies board, anyway?

Don't get hostile! You terrestrial radio guys seem to think that '50s/'60s Oldies listeners should just move on to another lame terrestrial radio format. Not going to happen.

Its very simple, and no problem at all, since sateliite does it better than terrestrial anyways. Oh yeah , just for those of you who don't understand oldies so well, not all oldies are doo wop. I think what the oldies fans are saying is that they won't give up listening to oldies just because it isnt being found on terrestrial radio much anymore. its not like they are going to switch from oldies to rap or country just because the format is missing in terrestrial outlets. Get it where you can(Sirius & XM) and its better anyways. No loss whatsoever for me, was a huge blessing in disquise. :D

but what we don't get is why they think anybody CARES whether they give up or not?

and btw to people in their 40's most anything before the beatles IS doo wop to them. a 42 yr old is just not *into* sam cooke or the ronettes (no disrespect intended to those 2 great acts)

when u like billy joel and fleetwood mac.........my boyfriend's back SOUNDS and feels like a fifties tune

Noone wants to see the music they love disrespected in any way, by cheesy putdowns, or saying you are no longer relevant. Yet, it really isnt being just now ignored, because oldies have been disrespected for several years now anyways by the presentation they were given on free radio. So, I agree, don't beat a dead horse, move along, take your music to a better method of prsentation and get respect back for those who enjoy this format. Times change, music evolves, and the manner in which we get it will evolve too- ipods, internet and sat radio make it actually an enjoyable evolution. Someday those who love 80s, 90s and todays music will be old and face the same situation, they will also have to adapt.

The reason we think that SOMEBODY cares is that we read about the attrition rate of radio employees on the home page of this site every day.

Great point FONZ!! CC obviously doesn't care.

Are you saying dropping Oldies is wrong because stations fire employees?

Too late. Most oldies stations were automated/satellite-delivered most of the time. Most stations in any format are automated outside of morning drive.

All music formats are becoming extinct. The only niche left for radio is local talk.

I'm saying that stations are firing employees because radio is losing listeners. Radio had built up a large consumer base over the years that was still asking to be serviced, but radio was unable to service them.

Sorry, but listeners are NOT terrestrial radio's customers.
Listeners are satellite radio's customers.

Terrestrial radio's customers are the advertisers.

Chicken and egg. Is terrestrial radio losing listeners because it is firing employees or firing employees because it is losing listeners?
Maybe neither.
Maybe terrestrial radio is losing listeners because listeners have newer and better choices available.
It's called competition.

Oldies are available: Online. Via satellite. For mp3 download.
The fact that Oldies listeners would rather complain about old technology than embrace new technology suggests strongly that advertisers would be wasting their money trying to sell them.
