WIBN off air

Leafygreen said:
yeah, good luck, he's a nice (previously overworked) dude. pretty crappy to be let go because there was no plan in place to keep the station on the air in the event of a tower collapse. Unlikely event, yes, unheard of, not at all.

It isn't unheard of to place a temporary antenna on a grain bin or other tower or wind generator. The newspaper photo showed about 20 windmills nearby.

By now the insurance is paying loss of business income and no doubt all the employees salary while the station is "off the air". Why not pocket that money and can staff? Great income in these tough times.

exactly. you can't tell me in the what, nearly 45 days (and counting!!!) it's been off the air they couldn't find a transmitter (fixed freq, agile, run by mice, whatever) to borrow, rent, steal, and throw any kind of pole up to just get back on the air. long time to go with no billing.

saw the same thing, sort of, couple of years ago in Clinton, IL. ice brought the tower down and it was around a year, maybe longer, and then a new owner before a new tower came along. in the duration they were on a 20 foot stick transmitting about 2 miles. so maybe it was a better scenario over there. at least they tried.

I heard that they were to transmit from a grain elevator in Fowler at a significantly reduced power to protect WASK-FM, but those plans were scrapped for some reason.

I'm sure i don't understand the difficulties and costs or challenges involved, but you can put up a 50' tower yourself for a couple hundred dollars, a 100' one for not much more.

The FCC understands stuff happens. They probably had enough of nthe olds tower that could have been scavenged to do this. If not, 100 feet of rohn 45 g is aout 2k new. That would hold a 3 bay.

Call me and give me two weeks of good weather and a good solid backup can be put in.. And then when the main site is restored, a back up is in place or stored for such an emergency.. Another thought.. Some of us go in together to set up a company that specializes in temporary TX-faciliaties together (with proper FCC STA's in place)... There is a maket in all small and large disaster areas... By the way, anyone have a small old processor sittin' around? We have a little FM that needs one after the floods here in Tennessee.. Hartsville/Trousdale (County), Tennessee has only 8,000 folks and one voice in the county.. WTNK.... 'Skip' [email protected] ....

Good to hear! Best to you in the plains of West Indiana and East Illinois! Gold rolls on!

I have been hired as the new PD and we will be back on around July 16th.

Lat PD was there 10 years.

Fired over the phone. One class act. You know what you are getting in to.

Two weeks?! We are off the air, we don't have two weeks. Give me a day and I can have 500 watts at 150 feet. Done it before.

Fired over the phone.....man that is just low. Good luck to you k105mark or is that now - wibnmark?

You could do an entire thread on worst ways to be fired. I agree that is bad. I was fired (company outside
of radio closed doors) by recorded message..on Labor Day, no less.

Is that a Balvich station, I was speaking with a friend of mine in Wabash and they told me how lame that station is

perhaps it just a matter of $$$$ which I hear in Wabash they lag far behind in

yes, it's Blavich's Brothers Broadcasting. The Wabash deal is still an LMA I believe, actually owned whole or in part by Toni Adams.

A little backstory on Wabash...WKUZ was originally going to flip to classic hits upon the start of the Brothers Broadcasting LMA. The idea was to mirror the format that was already in place at co-owned WLQI in Rensselaer, but 106.9 in nearby Marion flipped to classic hits about a month or two before the LMA began.

The flip to AC was originally supposed to fill the mainstream AC void in that area and to attract Marion advertisers to the station.

All they need in Wabash is a little TLC and a few $ to invest. Bryan Michaels, if he's still there, seemed gung ho for the task, good little area, just needs a solid commitment, from somebody.

Is wibn back on the air yet?
I was in Lafayette yesterday & if WIBN is 98.1, then it didn't appear to be on.

Give this station owner credit for having a real passion for radio if
he rebuilds. Most people would take the insurance money and put
it in the bank. Then, apply for a new CP (maximum power and HAAT).
Then, sell the CP. He may live to regret that he did not do this.
