The V was at one time, but when that tower fell, it was never the same. I think PPM has hurt urban formatted radio in this market. In Houston its great, but here....not!!!!!
Remember that both the Urban and the Urban AC in Houston began their PPM lives with considerable underperformance. The folks at Radio One decided that maybe the issue was not the PPM but the programming, so they tightened up considerable, cut out the loose chatter, researched the playlists and implemented a lot of more subtle changes... and they returned to positions similar to what they had enjoyed in the diary survey.
Buc, as someone who actually lives in Houston, I'm not drinking his kool-aid one bit. Urban stations down here don't sound all that great either, especially KBXX. Who would want to listen to J Cole's "Nobody's Perfect" for the 100th time in one day?? Seriously?? Anyway, I've listened to them for years and if you compare them to what they were about 5 or 6 years ago, they sounded much better back then. More wider playlists, longer mixshows on the weekends, all the way until 3am saturday nights, and not a lot of repeats during the day. Sadly those days are long gone. It seems they just got lazy, quality-wise. And they are the only game in town when it comes to hip-hop. At least KMJQ stepped up a little bit, music-wise, especially on the weekends.
The point is, buc, if I had to choose between Urban stations in DFW and Urban stations here, I'd switch with you if I had the chance ;D When I was up there in the D recently, I've heard a lot of new music there that the Urbans down here never even looked into, like Trey Songz' "Fumble", and Marsha Ambrosius' "Alone Together". Great songs. Too bad you won't hear them on the radio down here. Now I agree with you about the Quietstorm every night on KRNB, which is crazy, but when it comes to quick music selections played on KKDA, KBFB, KSOC & KRNB, in my opinion you people have it made. At least y'all have choices.
Sorry for the long post. Just keeping it real from a regular listener's perspective.
