Will News/Talk Fly on FM 101.9?

W whY New York? Can't someone like ESPN swap with Merlin?

Hey, ESPN certainly had their chance and plenty of time to make the decision.

Emmis announced last year that it had to sell WRXP because it had a big refinancing or debt payment due this fall.

ESPN, just got outbid in the buying process by Merlin.

Looks like ESPN may be out of luck in finding a for sale FM in New York for a long time. And don't think WFME will be sold anytime soon, its probably one of the last stations that will be sold. It has no debt to worry about.

I never thought ESPN was even a contender for the 101.9 signal. Disney's not in the buying mood, let alone for radio. Most of the speculation was just wishful thinking on boards like these.

Remember WPIX on 101.9?What exactly was their format?

http://www.angelfire.com/nj2/piratejim/nycfmhistory2.html (scroll down to what's currently listed as WRXP - 101.9 FM New York)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WRXP

Hey thanks for the NYC fm history page..Do you know about www.wackradio.com

Long Islands radio history.....Here's a question...on one of the boards, talking about 880 or
1010 being put on 102.7...So, if it's 880 will WCBS 101 change its call letters so it can be WCBS AM/FM.....Dennis Quinn was a big help to me when i started in radio when he was on WGLI and at THE PIX PENTHOUSE..

... WRXP lasted longer than its closest progenitor on that frequency, WPIX-FM's "From Elvis To Elvis" format, which didn't last long, but I swear everyone who listened to it became a DJ.

Which station spawned more radio folks, the WPIX format you speak of, or WGBB on Long Island?

I'm surprised our friend from Connecticut, MarcB, hasn't chimed in yet to inform us that the old WXCT also tried a female-geared talk format that went by the wayside after several months... ;)

OK Folks:

I needed to put my input into this thread. News and Talk on 101.9? You have got to be kidding me. Nick Davikar and Tony Santiago have a 2 word liner for this...EPIC FAILURE! <I agree with the both of you on this.

As for WPIX, the last format that was and is still successful...WQCD's CD 101.9 when Smooth Jazz/AC was its prime peak.

I know that the new owners are going to do what they want to this station, but the question remains...Do they think their plan is going to succeed??

Open for discussion.

Re: WRXP May Be Going to Female Oriented News/Talk

The newsletter, Taylor on Radio-Info has an article headlined with this question, "How about NYC’s WRXP – maybe a little bit country?"
It brings up again the rumor that 101.9 may eventually be news/talk on weekdays, and country on weekends. It adds this intriguing tidbit: "A country consultant has been spotted around Hudson Street." It also repeats what we already know, that NJ 101 created by Walter Sabo, now with Merlin, is news/talk during the week and plays music weekends.
Country fans in New York have had their hopes about the radio format dashed numerous times-So I for one am skeptical.
I expect poster Erwin to chime in soon that no, the new station cannot have music on weekends ;).

Re: WRXP May Be Going to Female Oriented News/Talk

I still believe that the whole "female oriented news/talk", or even "news/talk" format will not end up on this frequency. "Smoke and mirrors" is all it is. Whatever it becomes it becomes, but I think it's going to be a country station aimed at, yes, the infamous "soccer mom". Keep in mind that most current country artists can be heard at any given time on "WPLJ", "Lite FM", and "Fresh"...so if they were to go full blown with this they can take a little away from alot of stations. They have no other stations in NYC so there is nobody to protect, hence they can be anything they want to be. Perhaps they will have a "live and local" news team for mornings and afternoons, much like the old WYNY had. My bet is on Country, and not just on weekends. Very female friendly format that can be presented in a manner that the female listener can appreciate. But whatever it becomes will likely be more intriguing than anything the NY market has had in many years...that's a positive no matter what format it takes.

Re: WRXP May Be Going to Female Oriented News/Talk

I think it's going to be a country station aimed at, yes, the infamous "soccer mom".

Is that what you think, or really what you WISH? There is a difference.

Country doesn't have the cume potential that these new guys are looking for. There are not 5-or-6 million potential Country Music fans in the 15-million NYC radio market, that has almost 40-percent African Americans and Hispanics. News does, and also comes with the biggest advertising dollar potential.

Besides, Merlin wouldn't have hired all those WINS newscasters away at big bucks, to put them on a country station.

It's going to be news aimed at women, but men will listen too and probably not even be aware the target audience is women.

.EPIC FAILURE!

No real reason at all to think that.

The ad dollars in all news are as good as it gets.

The guys running this new show have terrific track records going back decades. They know exactly what they are doing and why.

The have huge bucks from a Chicago investment firm backing them up.

They have already researched and gamed this to death.

This is about the future of FM and not the past.

This is real change. A tipping point in radio.

Re: WRXP May Be Going to Female Oriented News/Talk

I don't wish it to be anything specific. At the same time I don't see this station, if it's done the way everyone expects, to be a "huge hit". NYC is not challenged with weak AM stations, like DC or San Francisco, so there is really not a need for this news/talk format on an FM. This should be something that is going to make a "splash" in the market....another news/talk station will not do this. Music that leans toward the soccer mom, I get that, makes all the sense in the world, but news/talk leaned towards the female audience makes no sense. Why do a format that will need to be changed again? Do it right, make some waves, and have some fun with it. Dare to be different. Again, I really don't care what ends up on this frequency, but news/talk makes zero sense.

London had a highly-publicized female-oriented talk station in the mid-1990s, Viva Radio.

Viva lasted a bit longer (from July 1995 to May 1996) than the experiment in Dallas before crashing and burning in a sea of red ink, after never attracting more than 100,000 listeners.

For this NYC is losing its only rock station ???? Incredible. Wake up and smell the coffee Randy!

Re: WRXP May Be Going to Female Oriented News/Talk

Can anyone remember back in the late 60's when WNEW became WFEM for a short time...all gals all the time?
Just askin'.

Re: WRXP May Be Going to Female Oriented News/Talk

What some people may not be realizing is that the talk format can appeal to women in a way that is so subtle that plenty of men could still enjoy it. Given all the serious news people that are being hired from WINS, this is not likely to be anything like daytime TV shows.
We still do not know whether it will be primarily a news station like WINS, or news/talk like New Jersey 101.5. If it is all news, then music on the weekends would probably be out of the question. But if it turns out to be news/talk, then perhaps weekends could have music, with hourly or even half hourly newscasts. Country music tends to do be popular with female demos, and would give the station lots of publicity in a city that has not had it on the radio for over a decade. And country music is doing particularly well at this time in many major cities, such as Detroit, where WYCD has jumped to #1.

Yes! They pay real nice too! Yes! You're right! Right until the first 6 months of the PPM come out! But good luck anyway! Randy, Walter and company just might lose their collective shirts on this one!

Ha! Didn't say I was working for them. I'm just saying that they pay well. I'm not about to quit my job and accept an offer to work on a sinking ship.

Re: WRXP May Be Going to Female Oriented News/Talk

Logic would seem to dictate that these guy's could lose their shirts on this move, that's why it doesn't seem logical. They will go with something daring, but not this daring....it has to be a music format of some type, be it Country, or Hot AC, just something a bit different than what has been done in the past. Safe but daring if that makes any sense.

.EPIC FAILURE!

A bunch of jerks from Chicago pushing MILF radio will never make a dent on FM in NY. When the blackouts hit everybody flips over to WINS or WCBS. This little experiment will cost them but all the wasted revenue will help this failing economy. LOL

Just because these people are changing WRXP doesn't make them jerks. They run a business and have likely researched the best course of action for the station. It doesn't make them jerks though. Secondly if you listened to WRXP I am betting that they aren't worried about you or any other listeners sticking around to hear the new format. If you choose to do so than you are a bonus listener to them. It always stinks when a station you enjoy goes away, but something always comes along to fill that void. Maybe not as quick as listeners would like, but it appears. As MedianJ likes to say...."Radio is a business, not a hobby"....lol. Everything is a business, express your thoughts and opinions and move forward.

Re: WRXP May Be Going to Female Oriented News/Talk

AllAccess is pointing out that the website www.ny1019.com shows, "Under Construction and Coming Soon." This leads them to speculate that the new station may resemble NJ 101.5, since it uses a website with a similar name. They also opine that the WYNY sites registered to Merlin may have been just a smokescreen.
