Will News/Talk Fly on FM 101.9?

WOR and WABC are both beatable and Randy Michaels & Co might be the ones to do it! :)

WOR and WABC are already being beaten by WFAN. WFAN is a local talk station. As I've said many times, the talk format is more than politics. Those who limit talk to politics will be disappointed by this new station, because I don't expect them to talk about politics. This new station will not be similar to WABC or WOR. They will not take audience from them. They will not seek to appeal to their advertisers. It's likely it will beat them, although probably not at first.

Again, WABC and WOR have so little local programming as it is, and only hold a minimum of relevance by virtue of their call letters and past heritage. If an all-local talker popped up - on a major FM signal even - that station will solidly beat the pants off of both WABC and WOR. It could even force Buckley to throw in the towel and sell off ol' 710, plus the penny-pinching Dickey family will have massive heartburn seeing WABC violently hemorrhage ratings and revenue.

Buckley might end up throwing in the towel and leasing or selling 710 to ESPN. What might Cumulus do with WABC if it starts hermorraging ratings? :)

I dunno. Fire Joe Crummy? :D

In any event, Rush and Hannity are landlocked on 770 until CC decides that they don't want them on there. Simulcasting WABC on FM is not an option unless Cumulus decides to keep WFAS/103.9 as the relay. Til then, they could be seriously SOL.

WFAN is a sports/talk station. Yes, it's THE pioneer of the sports/talk format, but it's not a general talk station. They haven't had a show like that since Imus got canned. And they have no local news department.

A worthy competitor to WABC and WOR would be a simple mix of local news and events, a healthy dash of politics (but not too much), and some lifestyle stuff stopping short of outright soccer mom material - with an assortment of comedy as needed. Strong personalities that can command attention and station loyalty. Along with "on-the-go, need-to-know" local news department, and frequent traffic and weather updates. Image it with a punchy, deeply aggressive tone.

It can be done. You can set up a strong local talk station, not have it be an all-conservatalker (like the failure that is WNYM), add tons of full-service elements not dissimilar to WINS and WCBS, target it to a younger crowd of males AND females, and it will take off.

Sounds a lot like KTAR-FM and KIRO-FM! Strong local talk programming that entertains and informs and a news department that's out there when news breaks. It definitely can be done in New York! It's long overdue! :)

Target a younger crowd of males and females? With milf talk and news on FM in NYC? I wouldn't hold my breath on that one. I can see it now, young people hip hoppin' to FM talk. What's gonna happen to all those IPods and mp3 players they have glued to their ears. LOL

I'm willing to be money that they're going to try to cash in on the "lifestyle" programming craze. They're going to target your average soccer mom with beauty tips, sales and TMZ/Perez Hilton-style celebrity news. Personally, I don't think women go to the radio for these kinds of things. It's more of a TV/Internet thing. If you go on Merlin's website (merlinmediallc.com) and read their description, they're all about "change" and "progression". That's nice but how can you be all about change and progression when you have the same old people running these stations? These are the same people who think it's 1975 and radio is king. People who are afraid of using social media and the internet to their advantage because it's too new and too different for them. This is the problem with radio in general. Everyone in charge is behind the times and out of touch with reality.

This station will sink. I doubt they will be able to profit (or break even) with the high salaries they're paying and the crappy programming they're targeting. All those people who left their jobs for the promise of a better work environment and a higher salary will find themselves jobless.

In NYC I doubt it? Too much over saturation on AM. Oh, maybe you want to compete with Sirius/XM talk channels or how about internet talk like Republic Broadcast Network? Man do I miss the late Terry Anderson. Programming and Formats get duller by the second on NY FM radio. If Merlin wanted to grab a spot and make a real splash they should take over 50s, 60s, and 70s music which is totally missing in NYC. With a playlist of 60,000+ songs (Not the boring CBS-FM same 300 hits rotation) they could do some real damage. Putting a mix of WINS refugees and WABC/WOR/WNYM/WWRL type talk shows won't put a dent in the NY FM band. Disco 102 had it going on and since then they never made any more sparks. They keep bringing in out of towners and consultants that don't know jack about the NY audience. Here we go again folks! LOL

Its not going to work just like back in the days of talk radio in nyc it never lasts on fm ...They did the wrong move well at least the new owners did .....

I'm willing to bet you on that. This stuff about a "female lean" and "lifestyle talk" is total bull. Younger audience, yes, but not soccer moms.
