Will the plug be pulled on STAR 100.7?

Parttimer said:
100.7 is 14,500 watts, B94 is 41,000. The metro is five counties and while Star is OK in town it lacks coverage in parts of the rated areas.

This is not as great a disparity as it seems - 100.7 has more height (919 feet AAT) than 93.7 (548 feet AAT).

93.7 is a better signal for several reasons, however, including 100.7's short-spacing to 100.5 in Bellaire, Ohio.

Again, if they want to do games they would have to be on 93.7.

I agree.

(As proof that great minds think alike, I was typing this at the same time Clarke was typing his...)

The power comparison isn't apples-to-apples, since the 100.7 antenna (919' above average terrain) is much higher than the 93.7 antenna (548'). Both stations are operating at maximum class B power.

That said, 100.7 is operating at two disadvantages.

One is psychological: it used to be a significantly worse signal, and even after moving to its present site on the North Side a decade or so ago, it still carries that stigma. (There's one in every market!)

The other is real: while 93.7 is non-directional, 100.7 is a significantly directional signal, with less-than-full power to the west. Add in the co-channel interference it receives from 100.5 in Bellaire, Ohio (the old WOMP-FM) and 100.7 has issues in Beaver and Washington counties in areas where 93.7 is loud and clear.

It's also short-spaced to 100.7 Cleveland.

And on top of all these things, I don't think CBS wants to say "KDKA-FM, New Kensington."

My link in the last posting was incorrect. The information is available on the radioinsight website concerning the registration of 937thefan.com and the others by CBS.

All things considered, if B94 flips like its predicted, 96.1 Kiss will jump higher in the ratings given that they are carrying old B94 and old WAMO listeners.

Is a smaller younger demographic in Pittsburgh compared to other cities the reason why Pittsburgh can't really handle two Top 40 stations? Yet, by the same token, we have Wish 99.7, Q92.9, and Star 100.7 which (with all due respect) tailor to soccer moms and dentist offices.

And for those of you who live in other markets, are there more than one Top 40 stations in your market?

You have got to be kidding me. CBS Pittsburgh is a joke. Sports talk was tried somewhat when 93.7 was the Zone The Man Station. And yes it failed after just 6 months. This has got to be a Keith Clark idiotic idea. It failed the first time and yes it will fail again this time around. For the life of me why dont they try classic hits in Pittsburgh. CBS Radio is strong in this format with stations like WOGL in Philly and WRBQ in Tampa. CBS do us all a favor and sell and get out of town yor a joke.

Pittsburgh is one of the "oldest" markets in America. It's one of the reasons why WJAS does so well.

C.

But does WJAS make any money for Renda outside of morning drive. What is the average of a WJAS listner? My guess would be 60. A very hard demo to sell in most markets.

WJAS gets ratings, but revenue is a challenge. Bogut and Cardille personally bring in some of their business with long-time accounts.

AND I LISTEN TO STAR!!!!!!!! THAT SHOULD COUNT FOR SOMETHING> COMES IN GOOD IN THE MAXON GARAGE

It's not. This is straight from corporate, as was the "man station."

BOB-FM and 3WS already have the classic hits market pretty well covered.

I was thinking that same thing. I wouldn't be surprised if WKST ends up being the number one station in Pittsburgh and that would make it very hard for anyone to challenge them. I don't see anyone jumping in to take them on at this point.

This isn't Keith's idea at all. In fact he has no control over this.

Saving the royalty fees alone pays for the new format.

Pirates are FURIOUS over what happened with Ellis at 104.7. Don't be surprised if they and CC work out an agreement to end their contract after this season and baseball goes back to CBS.

Pitt isn't going anywhere, but Duquesne basketball and Penn State football would be available next season. Better than nothing and brings in unique advertisers in the later case.

so maybe we'll see B100 or B101 come on the air sometime in the extremely near future?

Why not have the first 3/4ths of the day be 80s, 90s, some of Today and nights be new music with a mix show for clubs on the weekends? Thats no more crazy than having 3/4ths of your day be alternative rock music and a 1/4th be some fat man wheezing about sports.

JR, Shelly, Bubba, Mel might make a good morning show with the rest of the day a mix up of whoever else is on B and Star right now.

The reason STAR bills so well is that it has that dentist office/soccer mom audience, so keep that for most of the day and party it up at night.

this is all probably wishful thinking but hey

I like your ideas but I suspect STAR isn't going to change much at all. They'll probably take Bubba back to the STAR Morning Show and the rest of the B staff will be fired. It's so sad. STAR may be making a ton of money, but I can bet the average soccer mom wouldn't even miss it if it went away! They'd simply turn to 92.9, 99.7, 94.5, or the dozens of other stations catered to their needs, without giving it a second thought.

Exactly. Even if they go with this "amp" thing on 100.7 or B94, by the time people figure it out they'll say "why invest? I'll just stay with Kiss."

100.7 isn't doing the retro Fridays any more apparently. At least they didn't yesterday.
