Will the plug be pulled on STAR 100.7?

770 fades completely in the Maxon and I love that little station

So blowing up B94 the first time and failing wasn't enough? This is UNREAL...I can't even believe it's a good possibility it's going to happen. I've TRIED to listen to Star 100.7 at work...I can't stand the station. I DID like Star when it was more 80s. I loved the 80s Flashback Fridays and the "Whatever You Want" weekends. Now...it's not working for me. And...did anyone ever stop and think that MAYBE B94's rating aren't the highest BECAUSE people who listen to STAR are getting ALMOST the same music without a little bit of a rhythmic twinge...so why bother going down the dial to 93.7? When B94 came back, the 90s should have been the closest to "today" that STAR would play. I'm sorry, but the stations are too similar, I've said that from the beginning.

In regards to their signals...I do a LOT of traveling for work and personal reasons. 100.7 has a great signal all over western PA, their RDS data even displays properly in all areas. 93.7 MAY be stronger in regards to watts, but if they plan on reprogramming STAR AT ALL...why not just leave B94 as is and redo 100.7?

I think the whole thing is nuts, CBS seems to JUMP at the chance to try something new on 93.7...failed not once, but twice after the first B94, I'm very serious when I say that I HOPE It fails again. If they pull the plug on B94...I'll never listen to a CBS station again. I prefer 96.1 as it is...and my radio dial will stay put on 96.1 for that genre of music, hell...it will be my only choice. BUT...if I want "dentist office" music, I have a crap load of channels playing the same exact stuff to choose from, that's for sure!

"Pirates are FURIOUS over what happened with Ellis at 104.7. Don't be surprised if they and CC work out an agreement to end their contract after this season and baseball goes back to CBS. "

--Don't know where you heard this. Bob Nutting stated in last weeks Pirate Radio meetings how happy they are with the radio coverage provided by 104.7 and the affiliates. In fact they are encouraging affiliates to pick up the "Extra Innings" show. The Pirates won't be going anywhere, and definatly not back to CBS. The last few seasons on KD were a disaster technically, and they also provided no pre/post shows. Of course, so was the first with 104.7, but last year was much improved.

"Pitt isn't going anywhere, but Duquesne basketball and Penn State football would be available next season. Better than nothing and brings in unique advertisers in the later case."

--Penn State also has a good relationship with WEAE and I don't see that changing either unless CBS outbids them, and does anybody see that happening?

There are several networks offering NFL (Sports USA, Compass, Westwood) and NCAA Football (Sports USA, Compass, Westwood, Touchdown). So there could be some national play by play, but I don't see any Burgh teems making the jump anytime soon.

Could the switch date have anything to do with the start of Westwood One's Olympic coverage?

Very nice post. I agree with everything you said and I'll also stop listening to CBS Radio if STAR doesn't change its format to either Sports Talk or CHR/Pop! This whole situation is nauseating and disgusting. CBS Radio has no regard for listeners whatsoever.

I disagree with several posted comments. Although CBS may be a dinky group in Pittsburgh and is wrecking K104.7 in Charlotte, they do have some stations like KRTH, WCBS-FM, WOGL, WOMC, and WRBQ that sound like radio as it should be. Mostly live and fun. As for WSHH, BOB, WLTJ, and 3WS, I think they are average stations, but they are as good as any standard issue "female oriented"station and on par with Magic 94.9 in Tampa or Lite 98 in Richmond. I never listen to 96.1, even in the Maxon garage ( and neither do my friends in the coven I hang out with in Point Breeze.)

All things considered, if B94 flips like its predicted, 96.1 Kiss will jump higher in the ratings given that they are carrying old B94 and old WAMO listeners.

I was thinking that same thing. I wouldn't be surprised if WKST ends up being the number one station in Pittsburgh and that would make it very hard for anyone to challenge them. I don't see anyone jumping in to take them on at this point.

No. Most listeners split time between the B and Kiss, in fact the case could be made that the two audiences are almost entirely the same people. Maybe a point or two but number one, no way.

The simple math of the situation is that the older demos outnumber the under-34 crowd significantly here, so a CHR could not overcome that and pass DVE, KD, WSHH, 3WS and Y108.

Too bad legendary CHR wars are a part of history like WMCA v.WABC or WFUN v.WQAM. Maybe CBS is starting one in LA with AMP. Should one of their stations become very aggressive and challange 96.1 with heavy hitting promotions and over-the-top live personalities or am I not thinking right? Here in Tampa there is sort of a CHR war between Wild 94.1 and 93FLZ. Sort of. Both are live evenings (i think) and seem aggressive like stations used to be almost.

The problem is that radio is no longer the only way to get new music, and in fact with the CHR demo, it's not even at the top of the list. Plus adults who used to listen now have 5 or 6 other Hot-AC/Classic Hits choices that play songs they like, aren't "old" sounding, and don't ask them to sit through unfamiliar new songs.

Also, in the old days, the transcendent personalities used to work CHR. If they exist now they are talk show hosts or heritage morning shows on AC or rock stations (the best examples in the market now would be Jim & Randy on DVE, as opposed to Jackson Armstrong or Quinn in his DJ days). Now to work CHR you have be young and sound like you're from the streets. The big operators view CHR as a format where you can throw a bunch of kids on the air cheap.

Those days are just gone, and they aren't coming back.

Truer words were never spoken. If I want to hear someone who sounds like my neighbor's kid, I'll walk across the street and
talk to my neighbor's kid.

Of course, the CHR stations aren't talking to me. I'm out of the demo, and out of the format.

There are still a few high-energy personalities left, mostly at Oldies (whoops, Classic Hits) stations, and the last time I heard
them at KDWB in Minneapolis, where evidently no one told the staff to sound like Carson Daly.

IF CBS is gonna make a sportstalk FM.....

it will be the station with the BEST signal over P burgh....

and then, i predict they will be on the prowl for PBP rights......

if the steelers deal is not signed ( can't believe that info was right) it could be the first...

but remember............they CAN offer KDKA as a simulcast partner....

this makes sense....but is an expensive format so the projections are probably big...

so....PBURGH watchers.....which has the better signal.....i'm thinking B 94 but i haven't seen a coverage map in a while....

Both B94 and Star are terrible sounding stations. CBS Radio is to cheap to even voicetrack their evening shifts on Star or Y108. Its nothing but liners and music or song to song seagues on both stations. A change in format would be nice but its also very expensive to change a format. I personally dont see anything changing anytime soon. Remember the CBS stations are still for sell why would they want to dump money into them when they will be sold sometime in the future.

Just to clear up about Y108 and Star not voicetracking nights...CBS Pittsburgh still has a contract with AFTRA which at present time prohibits voicetracking. CBS would love to voicetrack, they just haven't decided to try to challenge AFTRA on it...YET.

Now, this sentence needs to be redone, as Jim & Randy are no longer.

I've never heard of a contract with AFTRA and CBS that prohibits voicetracking. Please do tell more about it. This is the first I've heard of any kind of contract.

Huh? Did we miss something here... or are you breaking a story?

Per another board, It looks like 93.7 is going to be KDKA FM as a sports talker called the fan. Ellis Cannon will be the morning host. They also say Bubba is going back to 100.7 and the station will lean toward a younger audience. I wonder if 100.7 keeps the star name?

What does any of that have to do w/ Jim & Randy, except for the fact that Ellis is on DVE sometimes???

Ah, that's right Parttimer, your buddy Labrozzi has been out of the CC loop so long, he has no knowledge of this latest and thus couldn't fill you in, so you could post.

Perhaps we'll just all wait til the press release and you people who think you know stuff can read it all and discuss.

Not much to tell. The contract is CBS Pittsburgh, not nation wide. It does not allow for voicetracking. From what I understand, the actual agreement has been expired for a while, but they have been abiding by the terms. It's just a matter of time before CBS decides to challenge it.

You make me laugh Parttimer. ;D You admitted a while back when you were trying to figure out who I was (and if I worked with you) of your friendship/alliance with Labrozzi. Now, you deny your "source".

Thanks Interested Observer for the CBS Afra contract information. Much appreciated. Makes sense that CBS would want to save money and use voicetrackers, too. Sad, but they'll do what they have to to save money.
