Will the plug be pulled on STAR 100.7?

Well...this is interesting strategy.

The B94 listeners are unlikely to be happy, because their station is going to vanish.
The Star listeners are unlikely to be happy, because their station is being changed.
The B94 listeners seem more likely to go over to Kiss than to Star.

They better hope The Fan works.

Melanie starts tomorrow (Thursday) morning at 9am. I thought the morning show lasted until 10am but it appears they are cutting back an hour for Melanie to start early?

Zach Williams starts his night shift on Star tonight 6-11pm.

B94 will run jockless and continue to play Top 40 music until the switch to The Fan on Feb 15th...

Well my whole question is simple...weren't B94's ratings actually on the rise? From what I saw, they were pulling slightly higher numbers than STAR and were trailing behind KISS very little...

But eh, who cares, it's gone!

My quick thoughts on this whole mess:

Star100.7 - Please get rid of this name. This is quite possibly one of the cheesiest station names in radio. Might as well call it Cougar Radio 100.7 now (I was thinking just calling it Ponzi Scheme 100.7 but it didn't really flow too well). This could be a good station if they would play the soccer mom songs during the day and then maybe CHR/Urban/Rhythmic at night. But I doubt CBS, or anyone else in this city has the balls or heart to care about the people that still like listening to LOCAL radio rather than plugging in Pandora or Sirius/XM. It's all get rich quick and put whatever the F we can on to get the people with the most money to listen to our station.

961KISS - Please just change your RDS from Top 40 to Top 5 because I pretty much only hear the same 5 songs being played on the station. And who says this station is CHR/Urban leaning?? If you clearly listen to the 2 songs they add into the rotation that are not in the top 5 every hour they are more likely Linkin Park or something that I want to slit my wrists too. It probably takes them a month to play all the songs in the top 40. The only time I enjoy listening to this station that does not make me feel like I am in the movie Groundhog's Day is on Friday and Saturday nights when they have Club KISS. Also, the imaging on this station is absolutely HORRIBLE. I could produce something better with Sound Recoder! I would seriously volunteer to help this station out for free just so I don't have to listen to the garbage they try to play between songs. This station pretty much fell apart around 2007.

I live in Boston and visit the 'Burgh regularly. Just a few observations...

Everyone here seems to think that the new Fan will be like the Zone. It will be nothing like that. The management that brought Jack and Free-FM (and the Zone) to CBS stations around the country is long gone.

Go take a listen to WBZ-FM online (98.5 The Sports Hub.) CBS signed that station on in August when WBCN went away. It's all local from 6am-11pm during the week, and they have a couple of local weekend shows along with various play-by-play. Fox Sports Radio fills the overnights and fringe shifts. They have the advantage of having the Patriots and the Bruins, but they're making a name for themselves with their talk programming. It's well executed. The imaging is top notch. CBS is marketing the heck out of it, and the ratings are showing it. They're already cuming higher than the established AM sports station here, WEEI.

If the Fan brings in all of the laid off sports talk talent around the market and executes it the way they are in Boston with the Sports Hub, I think you guys will be pleasantly surprised.

I'm bummed that B-94 is going away again. I listened quite a bit to it when I was in town over the holidays. I'll reserve judgment on the new 100.7 until they get the kinks out of it, which may take awhile with all the music and talent changes. Kiss is too cookie cutter. It sounds like the Kiss stations in Harrisburg, Rochester, Youngstown and Cleveland. It should...they all use the same 75 song playlist! CBS has been doing a decent job with CHR/Hot AC in their other markets. I'll give them a chance with 100.7.

BAD Move by CBS to merge B94 and Star. I keep Saying This Over and Over. Pittsburgh needs a Active ROCK station to compete with the X and DVE. If Star switched to Rock they would easily beat the X and may even beat DVE. Whenever I'm in Pittsburgh I will Try to Get Rocky 99 or 107.5 The Eagle cause DVE and the X are SOOOOOO bad.

It seems B94 has taken most of their features off their website. It's terrible that station is leaving (I actually live in LA, but I listen live from the AOL Radio app). They better not do this to other stations...

Rock radio is a tough sell. It's like that nationwide. There's a reason DVE has the Steelers and the X has the Pens. 24/7 rock no matter what the flavor is a hard sell. DVE is the default rocker for Pittsburgh. They make their money on their heritage 25-54 demos and the Steelers. The X skews younger, but that demo doesn't tune in very often, hense all the quasi sports talk and the Penguins. You're not going to make any money attempting to be the third rocker in town. Advertisers aren't going to knock down your door because you're playing Slipknot, Mudvayne and Chevelle.

Active Rock is so over. The best cuts from the format's heyday are on the X and DVE already. Finally, it's tough to get men to switch stations. Chances are if you grew up with DVE, you're going to keep listening to DVE. Young males aren't even listening to the radio anymore. They've got Sirius (for Stern) or Pandora or their own music files on their I-Pod or I-Phone. A third rocker would be a colossal failure.

Complete agreement. Was in the car today and thought "well Kiss, once B94 leaves, you finally get a button."

What spin is Keith putting on it? He's bricked the same station twice. I don't think anyone has ever done thatbefore.

I should note that I've met Keith Clark maybe two or three times, and I have no dog in this hunt, except that I'm
sorry to see B-94 go.

That said, here is Keith's quote as reported by PBRTV:

"This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create a super pop music station," said Keith Clark, vice-president of
programming for CBS Radio Pittsburgh (in) a prepared statement. "If you like B-94 and you like Star but flip back
and forth, you will love this blended station."

C.

Well, that's beyond worthless. How can you vote on a station that's not even been created?
[/quote]

Well considering that the format of The Fan doesn't interest everyone, myself being one of them, I think it's pretty accurate to say regardless what wonderful, magic things The Fan can come up with...I won't be listening. Therefore, yes, I would rather have B94, which is what the survey was getting at. You want a CHR/Pop station or a Sports station? I'll take B94.

Probaly wont matter since it's HD, but will this mean B94's HD-2 channel "The Blast" will also go silent or remain in tact?

What I find interesting is you never see Keith Clark's name mentioned in the news releases, etc. It is always Michael Young, market manager. Seems like Keith is kept in the shadows anymore by the upper suits from the central office.

Keith Clark was quoted in the news release announcing the B94/Star changes:

“It’s a new decade and this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create a super pop music station for the audiences of both B94 and STAR 100.7,” said Keith Clark, Vice President, Programming, CBS RADIO Pittsburgh. “Pittsburghers have grown up with B94, but the pop music audience today shares its time between B94 and STAR 100.7. If you like B94 and you like STAR but flip back and forth, you will love this blended station.”

I recall in one of the ratings from last year that B94 was slightly ahead of KISS. It seems this move wasn't motivated by ratings as B94 was doing OK. STAR was (allegedly) making more money than B and they wanted to put the sports station on the better signal which was 93.7.

My question is the following: WHY is the signal on 100.7 good enough for STAR but it's not good enough for The Fan?? ??? Can someone explain that one please?
