Will there be Christmas this year on the radio.

Looks like the radio grinches have stolen Christmas music from Boston :(

No, they finally realized that not everyone wants to hear Christmas music for 6 weeks during which time they lose their regular listeners who might never ever come back. That's originally what happened with me several years ago. I was a WROR regular, they started flipping early, I sampled other stations, and ended up a Mike-FM regular listener and never went back. Until, that is, MIKE went away :'( and now I am back to WROR. Unless and until they do completely flip in which case I dunno where I'll go. I've got 100FM The Pike close to home here in central Mass.

Yes; it's interesting: I am in that category (though I do come back). But when you had the
WROR/WODS war, with "the other guys" quickly flipping when the first went all-Yule, the idea
was that they would get NEW listeners. People who would discover them then stay tuned when
they flipped back. And it supposedly billed well. Things may be a bit different now.

>>ended up a Mike-FM regular listener and never went back.

WBOQ picked up some people too--just like WROR picked up listeners when WODS went Amp.
WODS is advertising "it's that time of year again"--yes, All Christmas!

...on their HD 3. Which is again great news for the dozen people who own an HD radio! :)

There's a bit more time between Turkey Day and Christmas this time around. There's someone new in Greater doing programming, I hear, and maybe there's some rebellion going around from
listeners. Some want all Christmas now.
Some want to ....ease... into it.

So again the idea was, especially at CBS, "we'll make money and get new listeners".
Now they realize it'll make money, but don't flip too soon!

And CBS isn't about to flip the relatively new Amp to Christmas. Imagine their listeners
suddenly hearing Nat King Cole ::)

Call us grinches if you must, but we'd like our holiday music to be not TOO early.

Who says we don't have an all Christmas station in Boston?

Wikipedia:
>>Because WODS no longer plays Christmas music during the holiday season, 103.3 HD3 flipped from their Christian rock format to Christmas music on October 19, 2012, in order to capture their previous audience.

All you need is an HD radio (like my portable). The other dozen or so people who have them
have this interesting option! ;D I believe it also broadcasts on the Web and on your smart phone
(what is CBS, Radio.com? maybe they're on TuneIn etc.)
We got your all Christmas right here!

And, the Christian rock format ("Mercy Rock") that was on 103.3 HD3 was moved to 104.1 HD3, and the New Age talk network ("Sky Radio") that was on 104.1 HD3 was moved to 104.1 HD4, Boston's first HD4 channel (which I can't get at all more often than I can, even when all the other 104.1 HD channels are coming in fine).

Unable to WBMX HD signal how does the HD3 and 4 sound. Also, last night , WBZ-FM HD 2 and 3 were off. but Hd1 was on. Best HD channel by far is Free -Form BCN on WZLX HD 3.

ssetta said in another thread he was told by someone at GM that ROR goes Christmas on Monday

WODS 103.3: Amp on HD1, the previous 60s thru 80s format on HD2, Christmas on HD 3 (heard
promo for it on Amp last night)
WROR--Eli mentioned on facebook that maybe as before they'd bump their reg classic hits format to the HD2, bumping off Nothing But the 70s.
I'll have to dig out the HD portable and see what I can get

Actually, there's another non-Boston station in the area doing Christmas music now. 95.7 WZID flipped yesterday morning (though it might only be on weekends, like it has been in the past).

@bostonradio tweet confirms it: ho-ho-holiday music come Monday

ugh :'(

Well, unfortunately, my hometown station (Worcester's 100FM The Pike) doesn't come in everywhere I go (driving, I mean) so I guess I start listening to either Mix or WXLO (also Worcester but comes in whereever I go).

Did get 104.1 for little while in HD. The HD2 and 3 sounded like 24kbps bitrate. Insigina portable switched to HD4 but there was no audio.

Also, WBZ-FM HD 2and 3 were still off.

Here's my theory on why WROR has waited so long to flip to Christmas. It just doesn't fit very closely with their format anymore. We all thought when WODS went away, ROR would start leaning more towards the pop side of classic hits. That has not happened, in fact they've gone further the other way! When WODS was around, they had been playing the occasional Earth Wind & Fire, Bee Gees, Abba, etc song. Now these songs are hardly ever played, if at all. The closest they seem to get to pop these days seems to be Stevie Wonder.

Well, its 7:45 and there's no flip yet, thank God. Did a quick check about a half hour ago across the dial and there's also been no flip at Magic, Amp, the Harbor, or Mix.

Maybe that thing about WROR flipping today was a hoax from GM to get someone else to do it. ;D

I herd them say at about seven Boston's favorite songs and then Wally was talking to Santa so I think the change will be today. They can't do talk to Santa with out Christmas music.

on their site it now says Sleigh Ride by Carpenters playing...just "one of four songs per hour" or have they flipped? Will see--site unchanged so far.Under just played it said Moonlight Feels Right by
Starbuck before that..then All I Want for Christmas before that. But you have to go about nine songs down to find another Christmas on (Feliz Navidad, Feliciano)

So maybe today but so far no flip.
Up in Bangor the FM simulcast of prog talk/sports WZON went all Christmas with the promise
of "something BIG" after the holidays.
Oh and I guess WROR has a talking to Santa feature starting tonite at 7 pm so I'd think it may be today

To further back this theory up, I just heard them play Black Crows - Hard To Handle. Last night I heard U2 - Beautiful day! What are they thinking??

Looks like they're afraid of sounding too "old" with '60s and '70s pop and are positioning themselves as a lighter, more relevant to younger listeners version of WZLX.

Well, I'm guessing the flip has happened with the Santa chat because here's what's played during the 7pm to so far 7:50 Santa Chat:

feliz navidad11/26/2012 @ 07:39 pm jose feliciano

i want a hippopotomus for christmas11/26/2012 @ 07:36 pm gayla peevey

jingle bells11/26/2012 @ 07:31 pm frank sinatra

it's beginning to look a11/26/2012 @ 07:29 pm johnny mathis

dominick the donkey11/26/2012 @ 07:26 pm lou monte

happy christmas11/26/2012 @ 07:20 pm john lennon

sleigh ride11/26/2012 @ 07:17 pm boston pops

mele kalikimake11/26/2012 @ 07:07 pm bing crosby

have a holly jolly chris11/26/2012 @ 07:02 pm burl ives

we need a little christm11/26/2012 @ 07:00 pm percy faith

foreplay/long time11/26/2012 @ 06:53 pm boston

So, IF the flip has happened, Foreplay/long time was the last regular format song.

HOWEVER, it remains to be seen what's played after 8pm. The website is still "normal" and the liners are still saying "Classic Hits and Boston's Favorite Christmas Songs".

YEAH! It's right back to regular format at 8pm with 80s at 8 and Jack and Diane by John Mellancamp. Looks like the flip is for an hour on Santa Chat only. No total format flip today kiddies. WOOHOO!

By the way, yesterday's post on Boston Radio Watch regarding a WROR flip today......GONE!!! Somebody is eating lots of crow!
