WIOD is on 100.3

Back when I was combining all the FM's in Miami, our parent company (Gannett) told me to find any other possibilities. The 1st thing I checked was WIOD diplexing onto WINZ's 7 tower array. I found WIOD could move there, increase day power to 50KW and night to 25 KW with a solid pattern from near the Palm Beach/Martin County line well into the keys. Gannett was not very dumb, they didn't want me to push it since WINZ and WIOD were competing. When Clear Channel got both stations I passed this on to CC Corporate, but for some reason they just did not do it.
FYI a similar arrangement fro WINZ could be done with WQAM. So many opportunities!

Is WKAT, or whatever that thing on 1360 is, still slated to go on the 940 sricks?

If WCTH decides to simulcast WIOD to add coverage, that could help. CC just has to be sure that there is no "echo" effect.

CC would NEVER simulcast the station on WCTH. WIOD really services Dade and Broward. Adding them to a BIG FM signal far south does nothing to help billing (and this is all about billing)

Isn't it always about billing?

A comment was made about the translator not covering most of WIOD's AM coverage area. By square mileage alone, this is entirely true. However, if one instead looks at population within the covered areas, the percentage is much greater, since the density out to the west and in the Keys is so low. Then, looking at the percentage of the population in the Arbitron rated Miami-FLL Metro (only Dade and Broward), it becomes clear that most of the potential audience of WIOD on AM can receive the translator. Furthermore, looking at the primarily English-speaking audience in the Metro, almost everyone who can get WIOD Am can not the station more clearly and consistently on 100.3 FM.

If anything, the website does not yet have enough emphasis on FM. Don't be too surprised if the logo eventually becomes one for NewsRadio 100.3, with AM 610 mentioned in smaller text. It will not be long at all before their FM audience surpasses the AM.

They have yet to move from Griffin Rd, but we are confident that they are working on it.

I live in Miami Beach and can't pick it up.

Of course, they could blow up one of their 100kW FMs here and put WIOD on *it*, <John Belushi> but NOOOOOOOOOOOO! </JB>

If WIOD had the potential to get some ratings if it moved to FM, CC would absolutely do it in a heartbeat. So many news and talk stations across the country are making the move. WSB, WTOP, WOOD, WXYT (sports), KXL...and the list goes on.

But WIOD sucks. Really sucks. Ratings have been marginal at best in the past 10 years or more. So why blow up 103.5 or 105.9, their two lowest rated stations, to put on something that doesn't have a potential of any billing?

They did a smart move. They still get the billing from both WMIB and WBGG, AND WIOD gets an FM signal, albeit weaker. With an upgrade, the translator signal will actually be pretty good. (Let's see if they tweak the processing. Right now, the AM actually sounds better than the FM!!!)

You can actually pick up the FM? We can't get it here in South Beach at all.

As for processing, I find the AM's processing to also suck (along with their board ops and Prophet automation). Levels on the AM are extremely uneven, especially when they are on auto-pilot and you compare the syndicated show they are piping in with the local stopsets. Coast To Coast is usually pretty listenable (they must use a decent amount of compression prior to sending it to the satellite) but Mark Levin's show is very bare and usually after one of his shouting rants, it takes a good 30 seconds for the gain to recover.

Maybe CC grabbed 100.3 FM to KEEP THE PIRATES OFF IT. That frequency has been one of the most popular for radio pirates in Dade and Broward. Problem solved !

Well if that's true, they have about 10 more frequencies to grab....!!

Yes, in summary, it is an excellent idea for WIOD to get this FM translator, but they boasted too soon.

It was a very bad idea to start promoting it extensively while at the current coverage level. The website does seem to have toned down mention of the FM, so maybe they got tired of so many folks complaining that they can't receive it.

Once it is upgraded, they will be mainly an FM station for the majority listening audience. At that point they should change name and logo to "100.3 WIOD" and also mention 610AM.

Just "Newsradio WIOD" They can mention both frequencies after it.
"Newsradio WIOD: 492 meters at 610 kilocycles per second on the standard mediumwave broadcast band, somewhat static free on 100.3 megacycles per second analogue frequency modulation, Now in brilliant digital sound on 105.9 HD2, and with even more brilliant digital sound here, offering streams in your choice of traditional WMA and RealAudio or for broadband users, streaming MP3 and cellphone users ACC+, Newsradio WIOD, we say it and you hear it!".

This just in:
Radio-Locator no longer lists w262an at 142nd ave and Griffin Rd, but only on the Hallandale Bch Blvd tower site.
Would someone to the south please determine whether this move is virtual or actual.
If you are downtown or in Miami Beach, Thunder Country should not be coming in with them at alll.

Um, they don't have that long (in time) of a station break....

Miami Beach (South Beach) here and..... still can't pick it up.

FYI... I'm using my clock radio in the bedroom to check, not my super-sensitive FM antenna equipped home theater system's FM tuner.
