WIZR 930 SOLD

Negative. "Critical hours" applies only to protection of a co-channel class A station, and there are no class A stations on the regional 930 channel. In any event, it doesn't allow any additional power around sunrise and sunset - it allows additional power in the middle of the day, at the expense of a cutback in power for the two hours *after* sunrise and *before* sunset.

Thanks for the info Scott. This whole critical hours thing is something I think a lot of us casual radio followers don't understand the rules all that well. It looks like if they wanted to do anything about their night signal, they would have to go directional, if they felt it was worth the cost. The ststion is going to have to be very low budget. Fulton and Montgomery counties lag behind economically even in the best of times. And with 2 other local AM's, being able to survive is going to be tough.

Don't you mean 4 other AM's? 1340, 1440, 1490 & 1570.

By saying... "don't do all that great".... you couldn't be referring to their respective signals could you? I live 14 miles away, and at least during the daylight hours I can hear them just fine.

Thanks Scott. I have been trying for years to find out why many AM stations that come in OK during the day are all but unlistenable in the hours just after sunrise and before sunset . Finally I have the answer

It may be that the stations you're trying to listen to have reduced power during critical hours...but to really answer your question requires an explanation of why critical-hours rules exist.

Here's the answer: skywave AM propagation doesn't turn on and off right at sunset/sunrise. It's not like there's a giant switch that gets thrown in the ionosphere that makes skywave suddenly turn on at the moment the sun sinks below the horizon. Instead, skywave begins to build in the hours before sunset, and dies away relatively slowly in the hours after sunrise, especially at the top of the dial.

Depending on the time of year, skywave propagation can persist all day long. Up here in Rochester, for instance, it's not uncommon to hear WQEW 1560 or WWRL 1600 at noon in the wintertime via skywave. If I'm trying to hear a closer signal on 1600 - say, WMCR in Oneida, which is just barely audible during most daylight hours here via groundwave - it's going to suffer more from WWRL skywave around sunrise and sunset than it will at midday.

Hello peeps!
I'm a new member ;D
The story I got with WIZR is it's only on the air til 10am [what s waste] They have gone country.
Don't know how that's going to work out being there are 2 other country stations, WGNA (50KW) and WBUG (6KW). WIZR has a problem with a Satelite don't know whats going on with that, Cuz I'm one of the engineer's that moved the station from Amsterdam back to Johnstown wihen they were suppose to purchase WCSS
They should be able to Simulcast from the FM sister station. As for the owner, My source told me the it's still owned by Albany Broadcasting.

Re: WIZR 930 BACK ON AIR

WIZR made its return to the air yesterday (3/26) after missing its 3/15 deadline, and is under new ownership. It has a variety/talk segment with Joe Alteri from 6A to 10A, M-F. It is using Dial Global's "True Country" at all other times, except when Red Sox baseball will be on. I for one think that it should be all country, It seems silly to change formats during the weekdays.

Hi Everyone,

Great to see the many posts on WIZR. My name is Joe Altieri and I am the morning host at WIZR. This is a new forum to me but regardless of me being new, I have a great deal of respect for all of you that follow radio so closely.

My decision (well I guess our decision) to have a Variety morning show was based on my time spent at WCSS. It worked well for us there being a small community and targeting a 22-55 age group. After three years of variety in the morning at WCSS and landing in Arbitron (not that means a heck of alot in Montgomery County), it made sense to continue with the same style show. So far the feedback from listeners has been positive. As one jock from a competing station put it, there is no mold on the show. I do my best to keep it fresh.

I have partnered with three Mayors, two Chamber Presidents, our local Community College, the Fulton County YMCA and many other local organizations keeping our content valuable to the listener.

I am a huge Pink Floyd fan but in 4 years of morning radio, have never once played a Pink Floyd song on the air. Nor do I recall playing any Alan Jackson. I do my very best to keep things current when it comes to Country and when crossing the lines in variety, I try to stay close to cross over music but have been known to step out of the box a few times throughout my show. So far from what I have experienced, this is what separates us from other local stations. A different kind of morning show in an area that has standard competition.

We are in tough times as we all know but I do believe from past experience and ratings from my previous position at WCSS, time will tell the story as to whether or not a Variety Morning show will be accepted at WIZR. Regardless, we are doing our best and having fun doing it. I especially enjoy promoting local artists and musicians on Friday mornings. I LOVE AM Radio and find it to be a tool to serve our community. With that said.. we will do our best and thank you all for your comments. This is a great forum for radio lovers to gather and share opinions and ideas. Keep up the good work.

Regards,

Joe Altieri

I'm just curious... I love AM radio too, and wonder how you might respond to those listeners who seem so profoundly against listening to music when played on an AM station? After all, WIZR is one of the few AM stations in the region there, NOT to (now) have an FM repeater, to the original AM signal.

Has anyone noticed the jingles on WIZR? They sound like cheerleaders from a local high school. The liners are fit for a station trying to capture the 15-24 age demographic. They certain do not sound like country station jingles, they are terrible.
