WJSE: wish you could move 50 miles north!

I'm a huge dance fan but agree its a huge gamble to sell it in South Jersey.

99.3 "The Buzz" got great ratings as Dance in the Atlantic City/Cape May books plus it got very good numbers in the Ocean County break-down(more than many IN-market stations!), but flipped to Hip Hop/Rap to make more money, and it does.

106.3 "Hot 106-3" got decent numbers in the Atlantic City/Cape May book considering its marginal signal but still couldn't sell it.

A dance formatted 102.7 would probably be top 5 in the ratings but would be lucky to get top 15 in revenue.

Dance and Alternative are two dying formats for terrestrial radio, both may have lots of fans but neither can sell ads.

Sad, but true. Companies and mainstream media like MTV and Dr. Pepper showed their true colors on what they think of dance. If these advertisers were for local businesses like how Party FM is getting their money, then it would be a greater chance for dance (and alternative) to survive. Let's not forget Arbitron's demographics and on who they are catering to. I see a greater chance JSE flipping to possibly yet another Top 40 CHR than for JSE to swap on 103.7. Best bet is internet radio. This is the future and pretty soon will put the nail in the coffin for FM.

My money is on the moving of LaGranD from 1490 to 102.7...
Part of the reason why it's on 1490 is to fill in gaps in 98.5's coverage on Long Island since 1490's signal is one of the strongest over there.

Huh? 1490 (Pleasantville / Atlantic City) does not reach anywhere near Long Island (400 watts), and is not even owned by the same company...

AM signals go a long way across the water without losing strength. Basically, the signal is about the same strength on the south shore of Long Island as it is at the Atlantic City beach. I personally heard it in LI, it is one of the strongest AM stations in eastern Long Island despite being from NJ. The strongest AM station in eastern Long Island is ESPN 1450 from Atlantic City, which is strong enough to even make it across all of Long Island, the sound, and a few miles into the Connecticut shoreline. 98.5 and 1490 are simulcasting the same La Fiesta format.

OK.. having serious doubts about the quality of the audio after it travels to LI... but that's not the reason it's on 1490.. they are separate companies... I'm sure there's an agreement in place for Atlantic to re-broadcast the signal... I've never heard of someone using a DX AM to cover their area... sounds far fetched...

I believe 1490 and 98.5 only target Long Island, with only Long Island commercials and events. It's not like PartyFM which has separate commercials on 87.7 and 105.3. I heard the same commercial for a Long Island business on both 98.5 and 1490. 1450 and 1490 sound like a local in Long Island.

You are incorrect... there are different commercials on 1490... if they were the same in one break then it was an error. 1490 WTAA is NOT designed to serve Long Island.

thought this thread was about, "what if" JSE could move up here (north)?

It was... but then somehow it got turned to how can a 400 watt AM signal owned by a separate company serve a market that's across the ocean... which, in my opinion is silly... but once again I digress...

In the case of JSE moving 50 miles north, then you'd have G-Rock again and once again the listeners would have to support the station (with ratings) if not you'd wind up with Hit 102.7
