WKLU Flips to Oldies

You're right. What an idiot Russ was for changing the music after he bought the station.

It averaged arounda 1 share 12+ during the old ownership, and then when Russ did research, hired a real staff, and marketed the station, he averaged around a 3 share with it.

How disgraceful of Russ for trying to get ratings and play songs that people like!

Now that the market became cluttered with Classic Rock, he has opted to fill a hole that has existed for two years and used to generate a 4 or 5 share with Oldies.

This is a for profit business - not a personal jukebox for the people who post on this board.

I have to put my 2 cents worth in .

I was a listener of wklu from day one , or so, in 1999 when the star had an article on its underground sound. I loved it from the start.

when I read in nuvo that it was sold ,I knew it would be the end of a great era.

when I heard wklu on the first day of russ taking over, the sound was so inferior to when quinn ran it.

unforuntaly the rest of the stations were not worth listening to so in spite of what I felt about it I stil listened to it.I heard wklu get better and at least occasionally play some of the album tracks(called deep cuts)the old wklu played.

now it is an hits of the 60`s and 70`s oldie station. another russ oasis letdown.

I've known Bruce Quinn for more than 30 years, I know that public statements made by Oasis over
and over about WKLU being Bruce The Radio Pirate's personal jukebox are just plain stupid. I remember
Bruce calling me at WFBQ when he made the change to British Invasion Classic Rock and that he felt
this was the hole in the market at the time. Quinn's favorite was Irish Folk Music. I don't recall
that on WKLU!!!

Russ is trying to make some money suing the Quinns. Marion Superior Court. Cause Number 49D02-0608-PL-32198. Indy Radio LLC Plantiff V Quinn Broadcasting, Inc. Defendant.

I heard what I thought was a new announcer in afternoon drive time today.

how many off the staff before the change are still working there?

I am giving the new format a try but it still seems less interesting then it was before the change.the problem is even if wklu changes for the worse(in my opinion) the other stations still don`t make me want to listen to them.jack -fm may get my ear.wfbq with its 2 or 3 song playlist per artist certainly won`t.the track plays too much disco. the light rock station is too mellow for my taste.

when oasis took over wklu ,no matter how bad it sounded to me ,compared to the rest of the stations it still was the best.that wasn`t a good statement about what oasis did with wklu initally.it is a negative statement about the other stations.

now that wklu became a good all round classic rock station again this happens and it goes down a bunch of notches.

radioho, relax. I am not Libby or Russ, (wish I had their money!) but I do have some programming background and some technical savvy. My statement that it took Jeff Goode 2 hours to tune up the sound was meant to be taken figuratively, maybe it took him 8 hours because I really didn't hear the station until about 8AM the next morning. Listen for yourself. It sounds totally different, much more open and clean, with good bass. My point is that a sharp Chief can make your station stand out on the dial...giving you an unfair advantage over stations who may not be as fortunate. It can be a PD's worst nightmare to have crappy audio or a bad signal, and not be able to do anything about it. Been there. There are a lot of stations in the area that fall into this category, and usually they are the ones with high cume and no TSL.

Does that mean Roy from Miami got tired of flying in? Roy built the station and, according to Russ, he was the be-all end-all of engineers. Russ interviewed about 100 engineers, and finally said ALL engineers from Indy have no CLUE what they are doing - so he hired Mike from Ft Wayne for emergencies - Did he get tired of driving down too?

Roy Priester (sic?) in Miami is a nationally known consulting engineer who's company builds and moves radio and TV stations. These consulting engineer guys get huge bux, 1000/day plus travel and per deim is not out of the question. (we in the wrong end of the biz?) So, say, 2 months to build a station= 60 grand, not bad to get it done right, and on time, and, it is tax deductable, this time- just for the new buildout. (you seen those beautiful studios?) But, it only makes sense to pay these guys this kind 'o jing to do the big projects and not day to day repairs and tweeking. So, I would imagine Roy has moved on to his next project.

Engineer Mike from Ft.Wayne is ~130 miles away, that's about a two and a half hour drive (with no traffic) in an emergency. ...A long time to be off the air in the Indy market. I think Mike is a pilot, but you can't fly a small plane thru a blizzard, or a thunderstorm, and that's usually when he would be needed to get the station back on the air. If they want to grow, and as the equipment grows old, it makes sense to have a full time chief. Russ got lucky and Jeff Goode became available. Jeff got lucky and Russ had an opening. If they are smart, they'll get Jeff to help out in FTW as well, I believe Jeff is from FTW and knows that market. Seems like a great situation for everybody.

Brickyard, that was a baited question, and you took the bait.

Funny how you know ALL the interworkings of this little 'arrangement,' yet have only been posting since this thread started? Seems someone with so much 'knowledge' on the local area would have been posting here for a lot longer than just since the 'KLU Flipped' thread began??

So Russ - thanks for the info - you explained yourself well.

And I have seen the studios - MANY TIMES! Was very impressed. Not so impressed with my meeting with Russ and Libby though.

radioho, LOL I am not Russ or Libby. I'll meet you sometime and I'll prove it. (;-> I have read the board for the last several years but never went to the time and trouble of signing up and posting until recently. Does the group not welcome new members? I know the innerworkings of almost all the stations in Central Indiana because my job requires me to know my competition and the talent pool, not that any of this was a well protected secret anyway. Now, not meaning to turn the cards, but how would you know Russ interviewed "about 100 Engineers" unless you were there? Only Russ would know that, so you must be Russ. The original point I wanted to make was the signal and processing sound really good, much better than it did before the new Engineer got there. Of course they could be playing different source material when they might have had some MP3s before.

WAO YOU GUYS SHOULD BE ON DANCING WITH THE STARS ....THE WAY YOU DANCE AROUND A POSTING

Maybe I am. After all, no better way to attract attention than to call myself out!

I wouldn't put it past me ::)

Brickyard 400? As long as we're guessing who's who, here goes; new guy who's very knowledgable about the industry, monitored the board in the past but only now participates [maybe now not in the industry], and has an affinity for IMS? Hi Charlie Morgan! :D

He certainly would be privy to the genius of Jeff Goode.

Then again, so would a lot of other former Susquahanians and Cumulites.

Jeff's underrated, but he's no ancient Chinese secret.

Would someone please cancel buttheadd?

The Beavis and Butt-Head Show ended ten years ago, last month.

Mr. Oasis, it's alright to sue him. He defamed your good name.

That would be about the funniest thing ever if that were true. Here we all are getting into this Russ-Ho board battle and it turns out to be Russ the whole time. What is it they say? No press is bad press? And Russ-RadioHo has certainly received tons of attention around here. Wasnt Russ an ad agency guy before he go into radio? Not saying its true that they are the same guy just saying it would be pretty darn funny if they were. And this whole thing were just a stunt to keep the WKLU name alive constantly on the board.

Hmmm, would explain where you got that PM you posted on the board. If you are Russ I apologize for all the bad things I said about you. You are a genius. [EDIT]
