WKLU Oldies Dies Tomorrow

You caught Steppenwolf lying. He wrote this and removed it. "I've never heard of WQFE."
WQFE was the worst station in Indiana history.

Boy, I'll bet we could have a whole thread about what we thought the worst station in Indiana history was. My vote goes for WWVR in West Terre Haute before Emmis bought it.

Let's see if I have this straight...

The Quinn's took a non-existing frequency, created a radio station that catered to the eclectic and tired of the same ol' same ol' radio listeners with a unique, experimental format. They sold it to cold_coffee for SIX MILLION DOLLARS! Pretty good turnaround - about a million per year based on the amount of time they owned it.

Then it was turned into such a stale, boring format, and was mismanaged so poorly by the owner himself that after only a couple of years, when bankruptcy loomed, he was forced to sell it for less than he originally paid. Not including the millions spent on new equipment, a staff that continuously backstabbed until literally the final day on the air (how do you think the 'ho got the info?) and NOW...

he has the NERVE - after complete failure - to come on here and insult the person who created the station in the first place!

As always - way to be a class act cold_coffee! You continue to amaze! Why are you still here? Tuck your tail and GO!

I was listening to WKLU about an hour before the end. Scott and Libby were on air remembering when the hotline rang (for what was probably the last time). They couldn't believe it and put Russ Oasis live on the air.

I have to admit that he sounded OK, not quite what I imagined, and left me thinking that my criticism of he and his operation may have been a bit much at times.

Russ said something along the lines of not being able to succeed as a stand alone operation in Indy. Pretty much what was in the paper.

It could have been done.

No complaint about the product except that his radio "passion" may have strangled the whole operation. He way overspent on studio facilities. Looks nice on the website pix but really not necessary. I don't think his sales people could sell worth a crap. Not much local direct business. Mostly national agency and 800 numbers. And who knows about his rumored involvement in the whole Madoff thing and exactly what losses there caused the station sale to happen?

That was planned of course. And he wouldn't be 'himself' while on the air on a sign off.

I've had several former employees send mp3s of his hotline calls where he is in hysterics that are 'classic' to say the least. They WiLL end up on YouTube fairly soon from what I'm told.

Is 90.5 still broadcasting K-Love or has it flipped to Air1?

thanks
Still K-Love

EMF has only one HD station in CA as a test that only had an HD1 channel and they did not want to have to pay the licensing fee so have not built anymore. They have not promoted that station which is KYKL Stockton if I remember correctly.

In Tucson, AZ they are on KLTU 88.1 which is HD but its owned by someone else (GOOD NEWS RADIO BROADCASTING, INC.) and Air1 is on the HD2 there with K-Love on HD1.

What has EMF done with the HD sub-channels?

A major radio market is one with 1 million or more listeners, a large market is one with 250,000 to 1 million listeners, a medium market has 50,000 to 250,000, and small markets have 50,000 or fewer listeners. Indianapolis IS a major market.

Then how come it doesn't sound like one?

What market then, in your opinion, sounds like a "major market"

Chicago radio is crap
New York and LA are just as boring

"major market" radio sounds about as good as "small market" radio because its all the same

It's true. Radio doesn't sound better just because it's a New York or L.A. station. Some of the best sounding radio stations have been in smaller markets.

Re: WNTY Oldies 92.5 is gone...

I notice some markets don't keep a station that plays oldies around.

I would like to see the owners flip oldies to WCBK 102.3, and flip WCLS 97.7 country.
Maybe people need to start telling stations if someone don't want to play oldies, you will buy SirrusXM, and maybe they would wonder what happened to all the listeners. No 1 goes to McDonalds, etc. because a radio station is there but everyone listens to SirrusXM.

AM stations could use FM translators and change to oldies.
I thought WNTY was a good oldies station in FT Myers, that just changed to talk.

Programming sounds very well produced, but why the hell is the HD off?

At this point I will take the opportunity to refer all of you back to the thread, "Is WKLU Breaking It's Promise" from waaay back in June of 2006 to see Radioho's opinion of the Quinns then compared to now...
