WKSW move to Enon approved

The FCC approved WKSW (Kiss Country)'s move from 101.7 in Urbana to 101.5 in Enon (with tower in Huber Heights), dismissing a couple of informal objections in the process. The feds decided that Enon was indeed it's own separate community deserving of its very own radio station.

So when does Mainline move it and what's the format going to be? It would seem that almost any contemporary music format would have Mainline slitting it's own throat by snatching numbers from Fly. Will it stay country and actually make a run at K99.1? Maybe stay the same and still target Springfield?

Looks as if that Ultimate Oldies is stuck with one frequency now.

Also approved was the "transfer" of WDHT to Urbana. Probably will be a lot of format shuffling here. If they want to take country head on the place for it would be 102.9 I should think. The projected coverage for WKSW would miss northeast Springfield with primary coverage and would be challenged in southern Dayton as well.

After literally decades of low single digit country ratings on 105.9, it might appear that Dayton Country listeners are happy with 99.1. Comparing the Montgomery County,OH signals of 105.9 and 102.9, it's apples & apples. The 101.5 signal is a no show by comparison. Using that to go after 99.1 would be an exercise in wasted electricity.

There isn't anyway anyone's going to dislodge K99.1 without tons and tons of money and promotion, and even then its iffy.

This was Radio One's application for the move. No doubt it would have been some type of Urban format, my guess being black gospel or even a place to air Radio One's talk shows. I wonder if Mainline knows exactly what to do with this. Thery're making a buck in Springfield, it they're the 22nd ranked station in Dayton, what then? Anybody look for a sale to KLove?

105.9 is probably content to keep doing what they're doing...it looks like they have 2 or 3 live day parts and then have plugged in Jones CD Country for the rest. I know in the past there was speculation about Clear Channel wanting it to move it out of the way and bring 106.5 closer to Dayton, but now that they are losing their grandfathered status they have to sell 2 Dayton FM's instead.

The K-Love folks only have two bird-fed formats, so in theory they only need two signals, and they just got WQRP for peanuts. I guess in theory they could swap 89.5 for the future 101.5 and have another full time outlet, but I don't know who would want to buy a time shared non-comm. They could swap it for 96.9, but right now that station has a CP to move south that has not been built out yet.

This one leaves me scratching my head...is there really more money to be had as an also-ran in a dying metro area than being the only local voice for Clark and Champaign counties?

The only advantage would be resale value. Techie, how long could they sit on that CP without actually moving?

The CP expires in may 2011. Three live dayparts seems to be de rigeur for country stations now. KKGO here in LA let their afternoon guy go, moved the evening guy up and now go auto after 7pm. Their afternoon guy went to Hunstsville AL where it is three live dayparts too.

As to taking on 99.1 they would need to have the higher power and coverage of 102.9. They could sit on it and let it expire but who really knows. With the impending sale and possible transfer of AM-1600 Springfield needs a radio voice more than Enon/Dayton and country probably works there more than Dayton which has a lot of signals carrying it. But with the present coverage they can not get much higher rating than they have been no matter, the move could bring them up some.

This allows for a lot to things happen.

First and foremost, WNKO in Heath moves to New Albany, giving it their own radio station at 101.5. The signal will cover a majority of Franklin county and still put tremendous coverage over Licking and Delaware. Personally, I would love to see Ingleside pick it up to simulcast their Alternative/AAA format on 101.1 and 101.5. But im sure the stick will be too costly for that.

Secondly, this increases the re-sale price of Mainline Dayton if they ever chose to sell out of the market. I really dont see them disturbing their Urban powerhouse too much. They may move Hot to 101.5 and Country to 102.9. But I think they like owning the Rhythmic and Contemporary niches in the market.

What about Oldies/Classic Hits at 101.5 and shify WGTZ to focus on late 70's thru now. Then it could be a combo sell for 101.5 and 92.9

WNKO stays at 101.7 for its move. That application hasn't been approved yet by the FCC.

Your right, my bad.

But Im certain the FCC will think about it now that they approved 101.5

What about CHR/Pop on 101.5? Say whomever buys 94.5, and they dump CHR/Pop, this would leave Dayton without a CHR/Pop. Mainline could simply fill in the hole, and keep the WKSW call letters, as in "The New 101.5 KISS-FM". Then again, maybe Mainline would want Kiss Country to be a thorn in K-99.1's side. Who knows. However, if people think things got violent online after Z-93 was blown up, I hate to think of what the "Hillbilly Brigade" that listens to 101.7 would do if the format changed. Just let me quote Les Nessman from the WKRP episode "Turkeys Away": "Oh, the humanity!!!" ;D

Would like to see WKSW's country format left in place. Cannot envision Lee Riley airing R&B or classic rock. It's been a successful niche format for Urbana and Springfield so if it works, don't fix it...besides WHKO needs the competition.

So let's see the official story and documentation of the frequency move eh?

If it moves to 102.9, the country format might make a run at WHKO. On 101.5 the major coverage area (city contour) moves South and Wset, so Urbana and part of Clark County is out of it, check the FCC field plot.

Actually, Lee did very briefly work at 102.9 WING-FM(I remember him doing a shift or two), and he also did mornings at 94.5 The Beat, as "Pops" Lee Riley.
