WLIR: It's going to hell, isn't it?

While WLIR might be extremely far removed from its glory days, I seem to recall it sounding pretty good a few months ago. It represented a pretty good balance of what a modern Alternative station should sound like, playing acts like Bloc Party and Kings Of Leon while not playing too much mainstream rock stuff (Linkin Park being one exception, though they weren't played nearly as much as they are on K-Rock). They also seemed to dig deep into their vast library on numerous occasions.

Now take a gander, if you will, of the list of currents receiving airtime on WLIR ( http://www.wlir.fm/playlist.htm ). I was taken aback by how horrible this list was. Really seems like a station that wants to give WPLJ a run for its money. With the exception of Shiny Toy Guns, all of the other acts on the list are Hot AC staples. Maybe they should claim that they "dare to be like everyone else". I mean, they're playing Colbie Caillat, which is rubbish (yeah, I guess I'm one of the people that just doesn't get it), but there's so much more awful stuff that you can't list it all here. The focus of the library has also steered away from pure Alternative to '80s pop/rock and dance music. At this point, why even call it WLIR anymore? Give it a name like "Alice" or "Lucy" or something, because basically it's a female friendly adult pop station.

Sure, WLIR is on a crummy East End signal, but this weak approach to programming will ensure that absolutely no one tunes in. I guess that we had Harlan Friedman to thank for the station sounding the way it did before - now it's an awful hybrid of '80s pop, dance, and Hot AC acts. Reminds me of the sound they had the year before the 92.7 frequency was sold to Univision. Could just be what they needed to do to run the station into the ground, if that's what they're trying to accomplish.

I don't know what to say about TMO anymore. It seems they can't go more than about 7 minutes without tweaking the format at their stations. And let's not get into the pathetic audio quality of their online stream. AM radio has more "punch" than that. It's pretty awful. They just don't seem to care at all anymore, and unfortunately, the same is now the case of most of the old, faithful WLIR listeners.

WLIR is now calling itself an "at work" station, they are going down the Hot AC path again, felt like I was listening to Muzak.

More programming genius from TMO. An "at work" station in an area where one can receive at least seven or eight stations with some variation of AC and Hot AC.

Can't say I'm surprised at all, as pretty much all the artists on the playlist scream out "doctor's office music". Some of the songs are just ridiculously bad - the one by A Fine Frenzy is old folks home fodder. This is a station that is trying to start from scratch, but why even keep the WLIR name? Anyone who remembers the station from its heyday or even from a few months ago will hate it, as the current LIR is the antithesis to those formats. It's pure soccer mom crapola with nothing distinctive or unique about it. First Radio X gets sold to the Bible Thumpers and now this. Long Island really is a barren wasteland for radio, isn't it?

That copy of “Forever Young” by Alphaville must be cueburned by now. If this move to ESPN is real, will they kill WLIR on 1/9/2008? It's the four year anniversary of the LAST time they blew it up (if you don't count the FM Channelcasting thing).

WLIR IS GOING TO BE NO LONGER... It is now going to be broadcasting ESPN.. SAY GOODBYE

WLIR was no longer the day the station was removed from 92.7 FM. Whatever this "thing" is now, it's not WLIR/WDRE. :-[

'DRE was unique. It was the personalities, the music, the playlists, the specialty shows that made it what it was. Ripping that all out and just moving the music to another frequency further into Long Island ended it all.

What's the point of going Hot AC on 107.1?

All the other AC stations receivable in 107.1's coverage area
WPLJ 95.5
WLVG 96.1 (from the SAME TOWER as 107.1)
WTIC 96.5
WALK 97.5
WEZN 99.9
WRCH 100.5
WBAZ 102.5
WLTW 106.7
WEBE 107.9

That's NINE other similar formatted stations 107.1 has to compete with! 107.1 and 96.1 have almost identical coverage areas. If it played alternative, it would only compete with some college stations

the old LIR was relevant when the artists and scene it reflected(New wave) were relevant(early to mid 80s),,,so really, what's the point?

The 'LIR webstream is not streaming Party. I am guessing that the 'World Famous' 'LIR will reemerge as a web-only broadcast, ala the old WCBS 101 when oldies left the air. Of course, with its 20kb stream from hell, no one will care.

Maybe TMO will eventually ressurect 'LIR, again, as an HD station, if they ever put on HD, that is. Or, if whatever they are planning to put on 107.1 fails, we might see them thaw out the format again, until they figure out what else to do.

Re: WLIR: It's going to hell, isn't it? No - Its just GONE

Not sure what is on 107.1 today, but the 'LIR stream is now streaming Party 105. I noticed the actual Party URL for streaming is down, so perhaps they are just experimenting, juggling and getting ready to stream La Fiesta. It sure does look like its WLIR, the station that dares to be dismantled...again.

Once again, Morely will employ one of the seven bad ideas they seem to rotate on their signals every two years. Why not Business News or how about Neo-News?

I thought WLIR finally got it's musical act together, just in time to flip it to something that they can puff out their chest over in the Long Island Press. I wonder what the new call letters will be, WXXP? WLRI? I can't seem to recall which is due for revival. At least the feed sounds slightly better than the phone line they used for business news on 98.5. I give this one year before it flips back to the Bone.

This is what you get when businessmen run the place. The only time Morely makes money is when he sells the stations. Let's hope that comes soon.

Welcome To The World Famous WLIR

While regular radio has completely destroyed the alternative music scene, The memories will still Live on at WLIR.FM. It's sad to know that in 2008, with all the different types of music formats there are to offer, the FM dial can not even provide just ONE Alternative/Classic Alternative station in the metro area (of the greatest city in the world) for large amount of truly dedicated listeners who have been tuning in for over 30 years. --- DJ Cody

The people on the dentist board say PARTY continues to be simulcast on 107.1 and they believe it's in a holding pattern until the next flip perhaps to ESPN Radio.

This is the case. D-day will be in 10days
