WLTJ changes name to Q92.9

Kenhawk-

I hear it from authority that there's no non-compte for Gary & Beth. I almost laughed when I saw your suggestion that they'd have one. ;D

I do wish them well. they would be a nice choice for WJAS.

You've got to be kidding...really??? NO non-compete? When they could have walked practically across the street and done mornings at WSHH or any of the other AC stations? They were good at what they did. I don't think they'll have to wait long to find work, if they're even looking, that is.

Not the least bit surpised that G&B have no non-compete. Neither did Quinn when he left RRK for 104.7.

The only issue with WSHH hiring them would be that they'd have to take Antill off the air, it just translates to more $$ for a marginal ratings boost if any. I'd be very surprised if they find work in Pittsburgh again (and I wish them the best, just trying to be realistic).

And I know this job isn't open, but they would actually be a nice change of direction for KDKA in the morning. All Larry does is hold elements together, some light banter would actually wake that show up a bit. But again, ain't gonna happen....

That's not a bad idea, Parttimer. Having a second person in there to banter with wouldn't be a bad thing at all. Larry does do a good job, but the chemistry those two have would definitely work at KD. The question is, would KD be willing to market them heavy enough?

So Gary and Beth had a nice rapport/chemistry. But do you really think they'd bring listeners over to WSHH. (like Antill would take himself off the air. They're saving money now).

the G&B ratings were dismal at best. ;)

I think if they were truly given free rein to do their show, yes. They put a lot of time and effort into each show. I sat in on one of their post-morning show meetings, and they take their work very seriously. They're not four-and-out-the-door clockwatching jocks by any means.

Today the music was significantly different than Day 1... Bon Jovi, Robert Palmer, Goo Goo Dolls, even Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" and REM's "Losing My Religion"(along with a fair amount of Lite FM standards). The tempo was better at times but not managed very carefully yet.

I think they are really doing this on the fly.

Not really. This board is for people actually involved in radio, not for an average listener. Us paying attention to something like this has no effect on what will happen with listeners when they hear the same sappy songs and move to another station.

BOB spiked in the ratings for a while given the unimaginative playlist. Listeners may see the billboards and hype for the new Q ( if they do a publicity blitz) and tune in out of curiosity. At that point the repackaged product may or may not sell. Given there is no soft AC in this market on FM, I think somebody who is not doing well should take the LTJ airstaff and try it. WDUV in Tampa and WTRV in GRand Rapids do well because of the older demos. Why not in Pitsburgh ? If I were CBS, I'd flip STAR as STAR and B have too much overlap. CBS is still successful with Smooth Jazz in Tampa, so someone knows how to reach older demos. Could STAR get anymore irrelevant?

That would take work and lots of it. Too many people in this business want the most results with the least amount of work possible. I feel better knowing that I put my heart and soul into my work each and everday and truly feel that I've earned it, as opposed to 'coasting'.

WDUV is #1 12+ in Tampa Bay and maybe #20 in billing. Old demos don't sell. They get crushed by a couple of stations in their own building (especially now that Cox has returned Bubba the Love Sponge to terrestrial radio).

I'd be willing to bet that the 620/770 combo is more profitable than 1360 is.

I just don't get people who would own an AM station to maybe make $50K a year when it's all said and done.

I've heard some say that there is a hole for smooth jazz. I don't listen to the format, but could it work on this station? The call letters are pretty close. WLTJ - LT=light J=jazz. Just a thought.

I personally don't like the change - not that I listened to this station much before. I just don't see a difference. It reminds me of when WRRK debuted it's Rock Without Rules and we saw that only lasted a little short of ten months. I'll give the Q until the end of the year when they switch to Christmas music for the season then come back after that with a new format that would hopefully fill a much needed void in the Pittsburgh area.

And while we are on the topic of the crappy sounding voice announcing the title of each song on the Q, I happened to be flipping thru the dial today and found out FROGGY 94.9 is doing the same thing with the same voice in country mode format.

Maybe it is the latest trend to make a comeback in radio and more will be doing it soon? ;) ;) ;)

Retro 80's voicetracking liners on the old reel to reel systems, now that was radio! LOL

Some other stations in Detroit and Tampa (I think) are doing this same announcing scenario I've found out. They are all sinking in ratings and are not profitable. Yes you need to separate yourself from other stations in the market but a poorly thought out package is sealing your own death certificate. It's almost like they listened to their consultant and ran with the idea not looking to see what he has done in other markets (or lack of in this case). I do hear a change in the music, just a copy of wish only slower / older. But I've only listened a few minutes here and there when able to due to how compressed the station sounds now, makes my head hurt at times...

Just my Opinon...No New Q for me :'(
Yes they fired everyone...Totally different format...moving towards the 90's
and forward...No more Vicki Cohill or Gary & Beth. Gone is Saturday Night Fever
Dance Party as well as the lunch break to energize your day. I am totally disappointed.
How annoying hearing that voice telling me the song's name & artist after Every song...
Sorry...I'm outta here...See ya Q` ya made me Blue
:'( Guess I'll say Hi to Bob
for ya...that's 96.9 Bob FM

Crazyace, I like the way you think... WLTJ - LT Jazz
That I would listen to...and I'm sure they wouldn't be telling you the song's
name & artist at the end of "Every" song... I don't care for the New Q~
I really enjoyed listening to (WLTJ) 92.9's music, format, the Saturday night
dance party....so I say "C Ya Q" Yes...let's bring on some Smooth Jazz
if we must have the change...anything would be better than what they've done...
