WLW Uses Tony LaRussa's Shingles As Contest Tie-In

[WLW has been the flagship station for the Reds since 1948. I am sure that there are stipulations about what can and cannot be done on the air for the Reds through their contracts, etc.

They have been the flagship station for the Reds since 1969.

You go TANK, you're 100% right. This was a promotion that would have made Randy Michaels proud! For those of you who are "apalled" by such outlandish behavior...go listen to something that's voicetracked. BTW, the Reds swept the Cardinals this weekend ;D

Yeah - Check-out all the stations that Ben Homel voice-tracked! Who do you think started this crap?

And the next time a Steelers player shoots himself with a gun tucked into his sweat pants, WLW can have a local bar buy all of us "shots". :D

Point taken, Matt. Although the sarcasm in your next post does make it sound like you are defending the stunt as merely radio humor. But I stand by my assertion that WLW's tactics just to get people talking are unnecessary and seem to take precedence over improving the actual programming. I believe I noted that WLW is more fun to listen to than many other stations of the same genre. Nothing wrong with fun, entertaining radio. But where do you draw the line on mocking someone's pain and misfortune? Cancer? Paralysis?

As far as the suggestion that some of us are "appalled" by these kinds of stunts, I've been around for a while and very little appalls or surprises me anymore. But the cultural desensitization to someone's serious health issues in the name of radio is a sad thing, imho.

Arbitorn, I have long respected your point of view on this board, and I certainly agree about our boy Mike Brown. But this promotion seemed closely linked to the Reds franchise. Technically no. But in the minds of many listeners, WLW and the Reds are one. And WLW goes to great lengths to impress this upon its listeners. They benefit mightily from their relationship with the Reds and we all know it. So I have to respectfully disagree on this one and side with Mr. Castellini.

Oops. I got the Reds Network confused with 700's flagship status. The groundwork for the Reds radio network was founded in 1948, with WLW becoming Flagship in 1969.

WLW is a shell of what it once was. Darryl Parks really ruined the station.
You can tell so by WLW being #1 in the 12+ book for over ten years.

That's one hell of a way to ruin a station!

And just wait until CC gets a translator and brings "the big one" to the FM band - but I digress...

Meanwhile, TRI brought up an interesting question today: Anyone think this "shingles" thing might have any impact on WLW (in the final year of their current contract with the Reds) re-upping with the team? It shouldn't, I would think.

When you are #1 and your audience is mostly 55+ does it matter? The Cume was down in the last PPM's 439,000

You could air Gary Burbank reruns from 1985 and WLW would still be number 1. When I tune into a talk radio station I expect to hear quality programming and not some repetitive stunts and shows filled with fake callers and moronic hosts.

Tank, you kill me!! I'm wondering (out load) why K-Fod hasn't chimed in on this yet, it ought to worth at least 3 pages of opinion ::)

Point taken, Kiese, but I'd keep an eye on the camel's nose poking into the tent all the same.

I'm not who you think I am, Arbitorn. It's keys2, not Kiese. I don't work for the Enquirer. I chose this handle two boards ago before it eventually morphed over to this site. It comes from my love for vintage keyboard music....a much less irritating hobby than radio. ;-)

Speaking of which, try www.GaryBurbank.com. He sounds funny!

Isn't it about time for Willie to do some "bad" thing and get "banned" from the air?

Maybe Willie will open his big mouth and badmouth Marty Brennaman's recent on-air comments about the Cardinals baseball players... ::)
