WNKO MOVE-IN

Reviving a thread from a couple of years ago:

Forgive me for performing CPR on a dead horse if this is the case, but I've not been around here when all this was going down.

Why is WNKO moving from Newark to New Albany? Before anyone Gibbs-slaps me upside the back of the head and shows me the obvious, I did see on Radio-Locator where their CP allows them more power/higher stick from New Albany.

I get the feel from their website they're a locally-oriented "hometown radio" operation.

What light can you shed on this for me?

They get clearance to pick up and move once 101.7 in Urbana moves to 101.5 Enon! That should be happening by the beginning of next year at the latest.

Thanks for the info.

I hope they know what they are doing. Having a stronger more reliable signal would be nice for the Newark folks who work in Columbus and would like to listen at work (as the station does not stream on their website.) However, there is a lot to be said for being a big fish in a small pond at the at work crowd may not be big enough to cover what they could lose.

WNKO's new tower site should be on the air sometime in May, when 101.7 in Urbanna moves to 101.5 Enon. The CP for the move to Enon runs out
in May and they say this CP will be built by then, which will then allow WNKO to sign on at it's newly constructed tower site East of Columbus.

Since this thread was started over two years ago, WNKO has a new CP which will allow to have a city grade signal over Newark. The question is
will they still keep WNKO a locally-oriented "hometown radio" operation or sell the station to a Columbus operation? That answer is not quite so
clear now because their original CP would not have had a city grade signal over Newark. Also, this new article quotes the station and the station says they will stay a Newark and Licking County radio station:

http://www.newarkadvocate.com/artic...0337/Now-hear-Tower-puts-WNKO-deeper-Columbus

One thing not addressed in this article is the license change from Newark to New Albany. ???

The new WKSW tower site North of Dayton is built and ready to go.
WKSW, at 101.7, has a "License to Cover" for it's move to 101.5. But, this may be a FCC error. See this thread here:

http://boards.radio-info.com/smf/index.php?topic=186124.0

In any case, WNKO is also ready to go, because their new tower site has also been built and tested. As soon as WKSW has a "License to Cover"
for it's move to 101.5 FM, WKNO can start broadcasting from it's new tower site. Maybe any day now?

I'm told by WNKO they still have more equipment to install before they are ready to go on the air
from their new tower site.

WNKO-FM tells me the new tower site is now ready to go. They are waiting for WKSW in Dayton to change frequencies from 101.7 to 101.5 which will clear the way for them(WNKO) to sign-on their new tower site. There has been a delay with the WKSW frequency change for some unexplained
reason. The FCC database has them(WKSW) licensed for 101.5 as of March 1 but they are still
on 101.7.

Did they have any estimate of when the WKSW move should be completed ?  E.g., an FCC limit on how long the move may be delayed without penalty?

That has to 'annnoy' WNKO a little.

The Dayton move of Kiss Country 101.7 to 101.5 is now official and up and running as Click 101.5 Modern Hit Music. Shouldn't be too long now until WNKO fires up their new stick.

Yes,

Via the Kiss Country 101.7 website: Their official goodbye to their faithful 101.7 listeners:

http://www.kisscountry.com/
All of us in the Kiss Country 101.7 family want to thank you for being a fan. As in many families, sometimes we have to move for economic reasons. So with our move to a new frequency and new location, we are also moving to a new format. Kiss Country 101.7 listeners are a great group of people, and we appreciate all you have done for us. Thank you for your support of Kiss Country 101.7 over the years.

Looks like WNKO's new tower is up and running. Was listening to 101.7 in the car loud and clear in Canal Winchester. Their top of the our ID said New Albany, Newark, Columbus and now serving all of central Ohio.

I'm out of town for awhile and NKO doesn't stream, list songs played on its website, or show up on yes.com or Mediabase.

So if anyone has it on and would care to list a sample of what they're playing it would be greatly appreciated. I haven't heard the station in awhile.

Thanks!

This was posted on the Cincinnati board about the 101.7 to 101.5 format change:

Scott Sharp went on the air on Z's last day and said that it was time to say goodbye to our old friend Z-93 and played Green Day's "Good Riddance(Time Of Your Life)". I know a ton else that happened that day...but I have been sworn to secrecy about it.
I was in the car today a little before 1 PM listening to 101.7...they had been playing Taylor Swift's "December Story" and the signal cut off about two or so minutes into the song. No formal goodbyes, no nothing. I immediately switched over to 101.5, which had their Stereo pilot on with dead air, then they said WKSW Enon, and launched into what they've been using to tell the audience about the new station.
Oh yeah, the legal ID fired at 2:50-2:55.

Also it sounds like they're running spots that were originally intended for Kiss Country. LOTS of Clark and Champaign County. They'll probably run them for as long as they promised that they'd run them on KC.

Yes, I also noticed they are airing commercials that ran on the old Kiss Country 101.7. They may
be "make good" commercials they are running on 101.5? Stuff that would appeal to small towns
in Clark and Champaign County and not the target demos for the new Click 101.5. Like selling tractors for farmers, ect. :p

this new signal for 101.5 puts a pretty decent city grade over Dayton.

The main target obviously is WMMX but the one that no one is saying is the "X Rock" listeners that don't want the hard rock, but have no where else to listen to Green Day and Offspring. Chances are, they don't mind listening to a Daughtry, etc.

Plus, WSWD used to pull surprising numbers in Dayton. Not great, but decent!

Heard a teaser on my way home from work tonight that said, "Coming soon to central Ohio, big news, and only here on Kool 101.7" or something to that effect. Signal still very strong out here in Thornville, so maybe they still are on their old tower. But if it's strong in Canal, where the signal usually is somewhat weak, maybe they have moved.

I'd bet they're on their new tower. Getting them loud and clear in Raymond (40 miles northwest of Columbus.) I figured I'd get 101.5 Enon, but it is staticy and mixing with another 101.5 which seems to be classic rock from up north I would guess. Good to hear a good classic hits format in Columbus. CC should have done this with 93.3 while they still had the chance.

They must be on the new tower. They were very strong north of the Zoo, over to Shawnee hills. Wish we would have gotten the 101.5 format instead. Oh well, this is Columbus.

They say they are testing their new tower site at 50% power and aren't ready to start broadcast full time from their new tower site.. Still some work has to be done before they start broadcasting full time from the new tower site.
