98.7 was calling itself WNOX. Now 100.3 is. Talk amongst yourselves.
IIRC The FCC quite handing out "3" call letters years ago. I understand if you had a "3" letter call you could use it on your TV and FM.BillBattle said:I hear that Pirkle is applying for WJP-FM.
Those were grandfathered, and most of those date back to the 1920's.BillBattle said:There is WSB in Atlanta..WSM in Nashville ...WBT in Charlotte, WIS in Columbia, etc.

Mack Sanders tried that in 1982. He bought WNOX, then at 990 AM, in early 1982. WNOX was the last of the Top 40 AM stations in Knoxville after WRJZ-AM 620 switched to country and WKGN-AM 1340 switch to All-News and Sports Talk. He grew up listening to WNOX when they were country back in the 30's and 40's and it was his dream to bring back Country on WNOX-AM. He changed formats on April 1, 1982 and basically he took a Top 40 station that was still pulling in decent ratings and turned it into the LAUGHING STOCK of Knoxville radio. A few years later (1987 or 88), 990 AM went dark and only came back on the air after Dick Broadcasting (WIVK's parent company before Citadel) bought the signal, moved WIVK-AM there and sold/gave their 850 AM signal to the University of Tennessee.secondchoice said:I was told that in the 1930’s or 1940’s WNOX use to have “live” country music studio shows. If so WNOX and country music could have a “reunion”.

MN Maniac said:The promos currently running suggest that Citadel is taking the calls with them to 98.7. The wording always includes "News Talk 98.7 WNOX" or similar verbiage.
If the calls were staying on 100.3, I wouldn't expect them to be included in the "we're moving" promos.
