WNOX call letters

98.7 was calling itself WNOX. Now 100.3 is. Talk amongst yourselves.

The last time the FCC issued a "new" three-letter base call to a station was 1958, when KUT(FM) in Austin, Texas went on the air. That was a special case, since the University of Texas had used the KUT calls before, on an AM station that it sold (now KFON 1490). The last completely fresh three-letter call was WIS in Columbia, South Carolina, in 1930.

The only three-letter calls that the FCC has issued since then are "brand extensions," if you will - KFH(AM) in Wichita adding KFH-FM, for instance.

Thomas White has the whole story here:

I hear that Pirkle is applying for WJP-FM.
IIRC The FCC quite handing out "3" call letters years ago. I understand if you had a "3" letter call you could use it on your TV and FM.

New rumor. I'm starting it. 100.3 will keep the WNOX call letters, but it will pretend to only have the call sign "W". It can then go news/talk and call itself 'W' radio. Or it can go country and brand itself as "The Dub".

That way Obama can blame 100.3 for everything. Or the new country 100.3 can do all the great radio production in town. That way advertisers can tell other stations to get a dub from The Dub.

Hahaha! That was funny.

IIRC there was an agreement to return WOKI to 100.3 after the LMA ran out, BUT the bankruptcy of Citadel allowed Citadel to “cherry pick” which contracts it wanted to honor (honor and Citadel’s corporate management do not go together) and which ones they could trash. The call letters rarely mean much anymore with the listener, unless the station has a heritage (ten or twenty years doing the same thing well). If I were planning 100.3 I personally would use Knoxville’s New Country 100.3. I personally am tried of the cute animals: bull, bear, frog, jackass, or jacksh*t. IMHO if you can get folks to remember your dial position or preset you are half ways there. I was told that in the 1930’s or 1940’s WNOX use to have “live” country music studio shows. If so WNOX and country music could have a “reunion”.

Mack Sanders tried that in 1982. He bought WNOX, then at 990 AM, in early 1982. WNOX was the last of the Top 40 AM stations in Knoxville after WRJZ-AM 620 switched to country and WKGN-AM 1340 switch to All-News and Sports Talk. He grew up listening to WNOX when they were country back in the 30's and 40's and it was his dream to bring back Country on WNOX-AM. He changed formats on April 1, 1982 and basically he took a Top 40 station that was still pulling in decent ratings and turned it into the LAUGHING STOCK of Knoxville radio. A few years later (1987 or 88), 990 AM went dark and only came back on the air after Dick Broadcasting (WIVK's parent company before Citadel) bought the signal, moved WIVK-AM there and sold/gave their 850 AM signal to the University of Tennessee.

I didn't mean go all the way back. You could have somekind of commercial or station promo with a fast forward of images or sound clips to the "new" WNOX. 60 Sec. max.

The promos currently running suggest that Citadel is taking the calls with them to 98.7. The wording always includes "News Talk 98.7 WNOX" or similar verbiage.

If the calls were staying on 100.3, I wouldn't expect them to be included in the "we're moving" promos.

They're trying to wring all the spin out of it they can. I'm sure it won't last.

Word on the street is that Pirkle has always dreamed of having those call letters since before the days of Marconi. Now that he has them, count on the WNOX calls staying on 100.3.
