Woody Windham

Cumulus sure does keep it interesting.
From Facebook (so you know its true)
‎"Woody with the Goodies" has a new home! Beginning Monday listen to Woody Windham on our "sister station", News Talk 1320 WIS-AM weekdays from 7-10 am. Magic 98.5's TJ McKay moves into mornings 6-10 am on Magic 98.5 beginning this Monday playing you the best of the 60's, 70's and 80's and much, much more every day!
Looks like TJ McKay takes over in mornings while they track afternoon drive. Hunter Herring anyone?
Will Woody play music on a news-talk?
I guess Bill Benton is out?

Thoughts?

I have listened to Woody since I was a child going back to the old WCOS AM 1400 days and just cannot see Woody talking. I wonder if this is a mistake because I just can't see him talking for three hours without spinning music. I know that T.J. McKay will do a good job and maybe they will bring back either Hunter herring or Doug Enlow. I know when Woody has been out lately Doug has been filling in for him and always used to listen to Doug on the old WNOK 1230 days and Woody on 1400. man that brings back good memories.

I couldn't guess what Woody's numbers are, but his endorsements must bring in a good amount of revenue
Wont they lose a lot of that with this change?

I'd love to hear Hunter Herring or Doug Enloe back on the air. But so far Cumulus has only cut. They havent added
This cant be the end of the changes for them.
Format flip for Magic? Newstalk WIS? Both? They must have a plan, right?

Bet it's WTCB to Country or CHR depending on Wednesday's trends.

That may be, but I cant believe that Cumulus thinks they can maximize revenue with Woody doing a talk show and TJ on a morning classic hits show. (no offense to Woody or TJ)
Then again, I questioned Jonathan on WCOS, so what do I know?
Wonder if WTCB is expecting a good trend, considering how long they went all Christmas this year

Yes it would be full circle but we have already seen that in Charleston on 92.5 do we really need to see it on 106.7 in Columbia also, I mean gee I like country music heck I have station that plays it, but we already have a three Country station battle in Charleston 92.5,96.9,103.5 and boy thats worked out well. If 106.7 goes country then we will have 97.5, 93.9, and 94.3 with country music in Columbia along with 106.7, sounds like a summer rerun. Here in our area we have played country music for 12 years here on WLRE 92.9,96.5,98.7 and last July 105.3 changes from Rock to Country and covers a lot of the same area we cover. How many country stations do you need to cover one place, must be more than one or two I guess. 103.5 in Charleston and 97.5 in Columbia are solid country stations and the best any one is going to do due is put a slight dent in them and not much more.

There is no way Cumulus would take B106 country. They are the top biller in their cluster. If it's true that Cumulus is all about money, they would not take down their cash cow. Why else would they put Woody on a talk station in a format he has never done? His sponsors and their money.

Here's the reason why WTCB will change formats: before the Holiday book, they were down below a three share 12+. That means all but their P1's have abandoned the station. That also means that "top biller" status will be going away, once the 4 book average reflects the erosion of audience. They are doing nothing programming-wise that would reflect better performance.

Ultimately, Cumulus will shift the WTCB $$ to WOMG and give Clear Channel some competition for either Country (WCOS) or CHR (WNOK). I believe Woody Windham moving to WISW is indicative of that strategy.

WWNQ is a complete non-factor. It doesn't have to be, but it is so poorly programmed, it has no chance at this point.

Agree with DudeFan on all points.

Although Magic 98.5 made much needed changes after Cumulus took over to remain viable as a classic hits station anyway, it's got a LOT of overlap with B-106.7 on the older end. If B should flip, Magic would pick up quite a bit of that older audience. Getting a somewhat 'younger' morning show in there can't hurt them in doing that, either.
As for Woody, with the station getting younger, I can't help but wonder if his demographics may fit WISW's more than WOMG's at this point.

Neither of the Double O stations are a factor, IMO. If B-106.7 were to flip, I wonder if 92.1 would adjust to more mainstream AC. They'd need to ditch some of the syndication, though, which isn't likely. I doubt 92.1 has hurt 106.7 that much.

The Double O stations are non-factors in any demographic at this point. Could be players, but are not as currently programmed.

Listen, B106 is still very fixable, but one of the core weaknesses is that you can randomly punch in and chances are you'd hit a commercial stop set. They may not be playing more commercials than anyone else, but it seems like it.

Secondly, "Today's Hits and Yesterday's Favorites" doesn't really fit very well. They are mostly "Yesterday's Hits and Yesterday's Favorites." It's all pretty much consultant blah-blah.

Honestly, what ultimately I think puts the writing on the walls for the format on 106.7 is the signal. To go up and take food out of the mouth of Clear Channel, you have to have a 100kw signal. What's WTCB have? What does WOMG and its bordering on AC format not need?

I am sure B106 still makes plenty of money for The Cloud Company!!! I would change things up a little bit in the staff Dept... Maybe it is time to let someone else try to drive the car so to speak. At one time to formula B used was unique and was a good listen. You could say it was an AC type Jack station, but it's time has come and gone and with Steve FM pretty much playing the same thing that is what really started to hurt B's ratings... When you have 3 and 6KW stations beating a 100kw there really is a problem and maybe it is time to get some younger blood in there to freshen things up. This April B106 will celebrate 27 years with the same format. In this day and age of radio that is pretty good.

Sure, B106 could use some tweaking. Ok, a lot of tweaking. But they are still the money maker in that cluster BY FAR
Why would Cumulus flip a 100,000 watt, proven money maker to try something that has been tried by so many others and NEVER worked? It would still be easier, and cheaper, to make their existing product better than it would be to build something brand new that might - MIGHT chip away at WCOS.

Cumulus already tweaked B to more of a mainstream AC sound, away from the AC/Hot AC/Adult Hits hybrid that it used to be (that format's not coming back, too unique for Cumulus). In their eyes, it's probably already been tweaked.

Did 92.1 (or especially 94.3) ever even chip away at WCOS? I don't know if those 2 stations would concern WCOS like a 100kw signal operated by a larger company would. I didn't think they were executed that great. Plus, the signals didn't come close to 97.5. I'm not a country music fan, but the times I listened to the Double O country stations, neither sounded too impressive in sound/presentation.

Country Legend 94.3 sound is flat the station is boring. I see Woody maybe lasting 1 year on WISW-AM

But what advertiser will spend money on a 100K country B106
that's not already spending money on the well-established 100k country WCOS?
Some maybe. But enough to warrant a flip?
And don't forget, Cumulus is looking at a big money fight with WVOC for Gamecock sports. (later this year?)
With WVOC on FM now - WNKT's signal strength advantage is gone. That one's going to come down to who will spend more
