Woooow KEGL....

There is zero chance of Clear Channel putting Classic Country on 97.1. Way way too old. If it ever goes country, it will be the young, modern kind of country.

I think you misunderstood. The suggestion wasn't about AARP geezer country or Taylor Swift country. It was somewhere in between, and there's a lot of great material and possibilities for a workable format there.

Yeah, a country station thats pretty much half new country and sprinkle in many of the classics that many know could work. KRMD in Shreveport has been doing well, and has been killing the other country station in town!

The format of Country would work, All you need to do is copy 92.1 playlist of the 80's & 90's with a good signal.. and bam!! a top ten station in DFW

I did not misunderstand. And actually, my reply was to Liberty's comment about their being a classic country hole in the market. He mentioned Country Legends 92.1.

To which I would reply that just because there is a hole doesn't mean that it is viable enough to be filled, at least not by a full-market Cedar Hill Class C.

actually, I'm on the wrong side of the metro for that one.
I had been talking about KXEZ. but that doesn't really matter.

If CC were to try with 70,80's Classic Country Hits, I think it would do pretty good. We have more than enough rockers, spanish, & Top 40. 2 so-so New Country stations. I'd say there really isn't much to flip to. 1190 did pretty good for being a jockless AM Classic Country station. I'm sure if CC were to use the playlist 1190 has, 97.1 could pull some decent ratings. More than likely better than a wimpy 1.7

as for what that would do to the the Ken Jones' stations, is a mystery.

I wonder how Clear Channel's "Rush Radio" is doing in other markets? Could Clear Channel steal Rush and Hannity back from WBAP and put them on 97.1 with maybe a simulcast on 1190?

Limbaugh likely. Beck yes. Hannity probably not.

When Hannity signed with Premiere, the word was that his old ABC affiliates would be protected. Not sure if that clause will stay in-tact with a Cumulus buy-out though.

I would love to see an Americana type station ala KNBT 92.1 out of New Braunfels. Red Dirt type of stuff with the outlaw country thrown in.
No more of the Nashville cookie cutter Machine.
The Ranch and Range just dont have the power.

97.1 has had more than 1 bad book. Brining back the Rock format has never taken off. Classic Country was brought up wihich was interesting considering the 1190 had a showing in the ratings when they ran it, and that was on AM. That might work. Can you see Russ doing mornings on a Classic Country format?

Sure, or I could see him laying mexican tile in East Tx like his old man. I think Russ's day is done. Just one man's opinion.

That could easily happen, unless there are contract tie-ups, it could open the door to allow Clear Channel to take back most of their talkers.

With all the resources Clear Channel has with their Premiere networks, they could easily put together a great talk station in Dallas on 97.1 with a simulcast on 1190 to lure AM listeners over and seriously hurt WBAP, KRLD and KLIF. (Just copy WOAI's Lineup).

There is a classic country station out of Houston on 97.1 that would work here. Popular stuff from the mid/late 60's to pre Garth.

Let's see...

----------- Apr ------------- May ------------- Jun --------
KXEZ-FM 0.1 40,700 0.1 36,200 0.1 45,900
KHYI-FM 0.1 41,700 –-- -–------ 0.1 30,500

June of 2011, tied with six other stations for places 50 through 57 with a 0.1.
I guess they might lose some of the 30K and 45K listeners and drop back to
the KHYI May 2011 level - under 0.1. Oh, the horror of it all!!!

All these experts posting on this thread and not one single winning idea that hasn't already failed. KEGL has a down book and it time to flip it. You guys sound like a bunch of consultants. No experience and all the solutions. All CC has to do is tweak the playlist and lighten up on the Floyd, Ozzy and the candy ass rock.

You want a winning idea? How's this???

GIVE ME A REASON TO LISTEN!!!!

Folks ask: "What's wrong with radio?" THAT'S what's wrong.

The people (suits, execs, whatever you want to call them) that run radio now, don't give us a REASON TO LISTEN!!! And they don't understand why they need to. Until that changes, and unfortunately I don't see it changing anytime soon, folks are going to continue to find something else that does.

*** end of rant ***

Well, I suppose Joe Pags (hope he's recovering nicely) can always have another shot at a top Texas market, after shooting and missing in Houston...

Well said, Sgt. I have been listening to 97.1 off and on, since they went back to the rock format. They're playlist is pretty stale. Don't get me wrong, I'm a headbanger from way back, but hearing Stairway to Heaven gets old. XM has a channel called Deep Cuts. Lots of stuff that you hardly ever hear, but I know it won't work here. Everybody wants to hear the same 25 tunes.
