WQCD becomes rocker "101.9 RXP" WRXP

At least when Emmis flipped the legendary KZLA to Movin' last year (and likewise relegated country to the frequency's HD2 channel) they offered an online stream of that country channel.

Go ahead, lalumia, and link Norah Jones with Wayne County
Nora Jones father is Ravi Shankar who used to hang out with The Beatles, one of whom,John Lennon, used to play gigs with Elephant's Memory Band at the downtown NYC club Max's Kansas City, where he met and palled around with the Warhol star /Max's dj ,Wayne County, who later became Jayne County...how's that...now can they play "Max's Kansas City" by Wayne County & the Backstreet Boys?

Yes, that's right. I hope they CD 101.9 have also a livestream besides there HD2 channel. It's much easier.

I, too, have mixed feelings about this rather sudden format flip. Like several posters here, I like both smooth jazz and classic alternative/new wave music.

I do think that the move was partially motivated by the fact that WQCD was taking listeners away from WRKS. The same reason why Clear Channel killed off the original WJJZ in Philly.

As for a candidate for the smooth jazz format, I'd like to throw in a set of call letters that hasn't been mentioned yet. WQXR.

I know that the Times promised to keep WQXR classical "forever", but let's be realistic here. Classical radio, especially commercial classical radio, is dying. Smooth jazz is an equally affluent format with larger demos. This happened last year in Milwaukee when the original WJZI gave way to an AC format, classical WFMR quickly stepped in and picked up smooth jazz. Now, I know that NYC isn't Milwaukee by any means. But, it just goes to show that such a move is not unheard of.
Besides which, NYC would still have classical music on non-comm stations WKCR and WNYC-FM, where I suspect most classical listeners go for the music they love nowadays anyway.

Good points, except for the classical. I don't see the NY Times making the switch anytime soon. WQXR still has a very loyal and affluent/educated listener base...I believe they're #1 in Manhattan, according to numbers David Eduardo posted here or on the "other" board recently.

101.9-FM WRXP "THE NY ROCK EXPERIENCE"

What are they trying to do at the NY ROCK EXPERIENCE ? ?

In their own words:

http://www.1019rxp.com/

Welcome to 101.9 RXP – the New York Rock Experience. When we set out to create the new 101.9 RXP, we asked ourselves, "What would WE want to listen to on a radio station?" Several words kept coming up: Variety. Intelligent. Local. Here's what we mean:

Variety
The Rock Experience isn't just about one era or style of music. At RXP, we wanted to create a station that didn't draw the traditional lines in the sand that have compartmentalized radio stations into narrow formats over the years. So, we bring together classics, alternative, new music and a few surprises in a way no New York radio station has done in many years.

Intelligent
You can hear a lot of shtick and typical "radio hype" all over the New York radio dial. We know our listeners are smarter than that. So, we're building a team of knowledgeable and passionate DJs and staff who don't believe in pandering to the lowest common denominator. Respect for the music + Respect for our listeners – that's RXP.

Local
New York City has an amazing musical heritage, so RXP won't be relying on corporate playlists. The music we play will be chosen and presented by our local, New York staff and DJs. We'll pay close attention to the music, concerts and events that are part of New York's rock scene and support up-and-coming local artists as well.

By any chance, does anyone know what the last song played on CD101.9 was?

I've already e-mailed Yes.com and asked them to add WRXP asap. They e-mailed back and said they would look into it.

Dude, they're already technically on Yes.com right now under their old call letters:

So I guess it's all a matter of rerouting the station to its new WRXP calls.

There are no songs listed on WQCD's log for the 2 and 3 pm hours yesterday.

My gosh, did anyone hear the format flip at all yesterday?

While this a welcome change...I remember WPIX-FM 79-80..from Elvis to Elvis..(indie 103.1 is the reincarnation of that station)
...very disappointing to hear the likes of "nickelback" and "hoobastank"...basically this is/will be, just another corporate rock station.

LOL. You sure are obsessed with Jayne. You in love with her or something? HAHAHAHAHA 8) ;D ;)

My reviews are mixed.

I loved hearing the Fratellis and the Kaiser Chiefs this morning.

The drawback so far...WAY TOO MUCH NICKELBACK.

In the 2pm hour I heard "Into the Night" by Santana ft Chad Kroeger (which counts as Nickelback to me)

In the 3pm hour, I heard "Photograph" by Nickelback

Two songs later, another Santana/Chad Kroeger song.

So, In summary, I'd like them if they backed off Nickelback,3 Doors Down, Daughtry and added Razorlight, more Fratellis, more Kaiser Chiefs, the Kooks, the Wombats, Arctic Monkeys.

And did I mention, less Nickelback please????

How about NO nickelback and the like! even the DJ on the air, after the nickelback song, said nickelback, daughtry, etc. all sound alike.

Suggestions..Kaiser Chiefs, Spoon, Vampire Weekend, Rogue Wave, Radiohead, Nada Surf, Band of Horses, Ravonettes, Seawolf, Black Lips....

I heard the DJ make the comment about consolidating 3DD, Daughtry, Nickelback and Creed into one band too.

And yeah, I heard Vampire Weekend on BBC Radio 1. They are HUGE in the UK. I was especially surprised to hear that Vampire Weekend is from New York. I am in New York too, and to hear Vampire Weekend, I have to do so via England...

if they want this station to survive, they need to go Modern or Active, and if its Active none of the slower classics. and for the love of god, NO U2, No Nickleback, No U2, No Hinder, and No U2.

NICKELBACK IS THE GREATEST ROCK BAND THAT EVER LIVED! PLUS YOU SPELLED IT WRONG TOO!

HEY I CAN TYPE IN ALL CAPS TOO!!!!!!!! NICKELBACK SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!

Vampire Weekend and all the bands I mentioned, can be heard on Indie 103.1 out of Los Angeles. Indie is a very unique station featuring Steve Jones (Sex Pistols), with Jonsys Jukebox, Henry Rollins, etc.

While I don't expect emmis to be this eclectic in their programming, I would hope RXP will drop the nickelback etc., and be more adventurous with their new music....time will tell...

LOL. You sure are obsessed with Jayne. You in love with her or something? HAHAHAHAHA
I just took d to tha j 's challenge, that's all.....wayne county made some amazing NYC rock tracks (the cover of "NightTime" would be an instant grabber on a station like rxp),so did the NY Dolls, The Dead Boys, Cherry Vanilla,etc even if they each exposed by one rotation track, the 'hipness' quotient would go through the roof, it would be 'new music' to a lot of people,and couldn't do any worse than K Rock's Top 30 approach;

If you're not from New York, don't try to say you're from New York or think you can program for New York. Boulder is not New York. Period. Never will be.

No one like Patti Smith all that much.

Incubus into Billy Joel is just sad.

No one like Patti Smith all that much.
Patti's ok, but her late 70s NYC rival Cherry Vanilla would be a much better sounding 'roots' artist; the studio track(RCA UK) of "The Punk" by Cherry Vanilla would be another, eclectic perfect fit
