Yes, that's right. I hope they CD 101.9 have also a livestream besides there HD2 channel. It's much easier.

I, too, have mixed feelings about this rather sudden format flip. Like several posters here, I like both smooth jazz and classic alternative/new wave music.

I do think that the move was partially motivated by the fact that WQCD was taking listeners away from WRKS. The same reason why Clear Channel killed off the original WJJZ in Philly.

As for a candidate for the smooth jazz format, I'd like to throw in a set of call letters that hasn't been mentioned yet. WQXR.

I know that the Times promised to keep WQXR classical "forever", but let's be realistic here. Classical radio, especially commercial classical radio, is dying. Smooth jazz is an equally affluent format with larger demos. This happened last year in Milwaukee when the original WJZI gave way to an AC format, classical WFMR quickly stepped in and picked up smooth jazz. Now, I know that NYC isn't Milwaukee by any means. But, it just goes to show that such a move is not unheard of.
Besides which, NYC would still have classical music on non-comm stations WKCR and WNYC-FM, where I suspect most classical listeners go for the music they love nowadays anyway.

Good points, except for the classical. I don't see the NY Times making the switch anytime soon. WQXR still has a very loyal and affluent/educated listener base...I believe they're #1 in Manhattan, according to numbers David Eduardo posted here or on the "other" board recently.

While this a welcome change...I remember WPIX-FM 79-80..from Elvis to Elvis..(indie 103.1 is the reincarnation of that station)
...very disappointing to hear the likes of "nickelback" and "hoobastank"...basically this is/will be, just another corporate rock station.

My reviews are mixed.

I loved hearing the Fratellis and the Kaiser Chiefs this morning.

The drawback so far...WAY TOO MUCH NICKELBACK.

In the 2pm hour I heard "Into the Night" by Santana ft Chad Kroeger (which counts as Nickelback to me)

In the 3pm hour, I heard "Photograph" by Nickelback

Two songs later, another Santana/Chad Kroeger song.

So, In summary, I'd like them if they backed off Nickelback,3 Doors Down, Daughtry and added Razorlight, more Fratellis, more Kaiser Chiefs, the Kooks, the Wombats, Arctic Monkeys.

And did I mention, less Nickelback please????

How about NO nickelback and the like! even the DJ on the air, after the nickelback song, said nickelback, daughtry, etc. all sound alike.

Suggestions..Kaiser Chiefs, Spoon, Vampire Weekend, Rogue Wave, Radiohead, Nada Surf, Band of Horses, Ravonettes, Seawolf, Black Lips....

Vampire Weekend and all the bands I mentioned, can be heard on Indie 103.1 out of Los Angeles. Indie is a very unique station featuring Steve Jones (Sex Pistols), with Jonsys Jukebox, Henry Rollins, etc.

While I don't expect emmis to be this eclectic in their programming, I would hope RXP will drop the nickelback etc., and be more adventurous with their new music....time will tell...

I just took d to tha j 's challenge, that's all.....wayne county made some amazing NYC rock tracks (the cover of "NightTime" would be an instant grabber on a station like rxp),so did the NY Dolls, The Dead Boys, Cherry Vanilla,etc even if they each exposed by one rotation track, the 'hipness' quotient would go through the roof, it would be 'new music' to a lot of people,and couldn't do any worse than K Rock's Top 30 approach;

Patti's ok, but her late 70s NYC rival Cherry Vanilla would be a much better sounding 'roots' artist; the studio track(RCA UK) of "The Punk" by Cherry Vanilla would be another, eclectic perfect fit
