Yes, I agree. Again, they're hyping themselves as an "intelligent" alternative to "radio hype", and Nickelback and their ilk are the antithesis of that.
Suggestions..Kaiser Chiefs, Spoon, Vampire Weekend, Rogue Wave, Radiohead, Nada Surf, Band of Horses, Ravonettes, Seawolf, Black Lips....
They have played Spoon and Rogue Wave which I commend them for. They've played Radiohead's latest as well but that doesn't really surprise me.
So far, I have mixed feelings on this station. I really like the general idea of this station, and there have been some nice surprises. But so far it's been a bit too heavy on stuff that you can hear on K-Rock, Q104.3, and/or WPLJ. I can understand the need to play familiar tracks, but it wouldn't hurt to be a bit more eclectic. There have also been some tracks that questionably fit in with what they seem to be going for, namely ones that lean a little too heavily towards either hard rock (AC/DC, Van Halen, Ozzy) or Hot AC (Sheryl Crow, newer Goo Goo Dolls). Again, though, they're playing some good stuff and I think this station has quite a bit of potential.
As for K-Rock, I think that now more than ever, their best bet would be to go for a very youthful, hard-edged sound with lots of new music. They should draw from both the Alternative and Active charts, but eliminate the soft stuff from the former and the trucker rock from the latter. Also get rid of the "old school rock" and cut back the airplay of recurrents and 90s staples. This would make for great counterprogramming to the older and softer lean of WRXP.
