WQRT RealTalk/Furman factor

Just for fun, let me ask this to all. If Furman went back to 700 and Lance McAlister (sp?) switched to 1160 who would get the better ratings?

Hey, Mr. Mole...

It's spelled CUME.....

Yeah, I saw that and giggled, because I still have a pretty immature sense of humor sometimes.

I still laugh at those old "Homer Simpson" bits.... you know, they call Moe's and ask for "Hugh Jass"....

The raings may be poor -- but you can't blame Furman for that on Real Talk 1160. Take Thursday for example on the day Sparky passed. He had Pete Rose, Murray Chass from the NY Times and local author Darryl Smith on the Big Red Machine.

Hey someone is listening to Real Talk -- Willie Cunningha, had Smith as a guest on Friday. We'll see how WLW ratings fare in the winter months with no baseball and esentially no football.

I don't think The Big Juan is too worried - and in the winter months 'QRT's signal is even worse - it starts going down the tubes right when Furman's show is on! I like Furman but, as they say these days, "it is what it is!"

Its being worked on, Ken. It may take a little time. The wheels move slowly. No miracles, here, just improvements.

That is good that the night signal is being worked on. I actually get 1160 pretty good at night. Lately it has been better than 55KRC's night signal.

Part of the deal is that WYLL is being worked on. I think that they are finally "on pattern" at night.

In reality, their new night pattern, near Joliet adjacent to I 355, sends less energy towards us (about 1/3 less) than their old night pattern. Our NIF moves quite a bit north. The only trick is that the freeway construction was wreaking havoc on the build.
We'll see.

Why don;t they let Furman go 3 hours? Or better yet, start him at 3 -- he'd kick ass against 1530.

I think you lose some great "remote" opportunities if you start the show too early.
They just did that gig with T O.....
I wonder how early you could do live sports talk in Cincinnati and be successful?

I hope you don't mind me resurrecting what was a very long-winded thread to begin with, but I just had to weigh in.

After reading page after page of hype on this board about Furman's show, I saw a commercial for the station on late night (WKRP) a couple of weeks ago. A terrible commercial, but that's besides the point. I finally tuned in to hear what all the crowing is about.

Overall, Furman seems like he still has it when he wants to. I have heard a couple of good guests and he makes some great points about our teams. In that regard he is well ahead of the clowns at 700 and 1530 (which isn't saying much).

Unfortunately, all of this is weighed down by extended interviews about low-profile teams and also-ran sports. The first night I tuned in I was treated to boring, awkward banter with some college kid who sounded like a friend of Furman's. They spent 30 minutes talking to him about taking online classes. Why would anyone care to hear about this? There goes your AQH.

Add on top of this a very thick layer of poor production values: uncomfortably long periods of dead air in and out of breaks, and some commercials starting on top of the ends of others.

As for the station as a whole, why make listeners commit to sitting through a 4 minute break if 3 of those minutes are YOUR OWN SPOTS?? And that morning show is a train wreck worthy of its own thread.

I hope if anyone at the station reads this they'll take some of it to heart because all of this is fixable. In the meantime, Furman is being wasted on a broken station pulling in a 0.1%

either spend some money to stay in the game or get out.....it amazes me how companies refuse to invest and expect miracles. It makes you wonder about their business plan (or lack of) to start with.....

Andy Furman Moves to Morning Drive on 1160 and adds Dennis miller from noon to 2PM. No mention on what is going to be on from 5-7PM, Andy's current slot until Jan 3rd. This is a smart move for 1160.

http://cincinnati.com/blogs/tv/2010/12/10/andy-furman-to-host-morning-sports-talk-show/

WQRT still loses fully half of Furman's program in winter with this new slot. Why? Sunrise times.

In this case, WQRT operates their 990 watt nighttime signal until 7 AM or later November through February. They cannot legally switch to daytime operation before then. So, basically, they went from losing the BACK end of the show in the evening, to the FRONT end of the show in the morning.

I'd like to see him do well in this morning time slot. But it'll be March or April before we can figure out what the maximum ratings would be in the first hour.

Well, we did an analysis of this and the new time slot allow for more of Andy at full power. We looked at starting the show at 8AM and it did not test well.
Andy being live and local at 7 gives us a bit of a jump on the rest of the pack.
Look for another well known name to return to Cincinnati radio.
We are on the night pattern until 7:45 AM in December, 8:00 AM in January and 7:30 in February. Not too bad.
The FCC finally has a Beta program that properly calculates all of the nighttime mess thats going on. They are recalculating everyones pre and post sunrise numbers. The folks at the portals are saying the new data will be out soon.
We are hoping that there will be something there for us but we are still working on some other options.

Re: Morning v Afternoon argument: You are all missing a key element in the mix...in the morning, WYLL is still at NIGHT pattern/power for another 30-45 minutes after WQRT raises to day power and pattern. In the afternoon, WYLL is at DAY power for 30-45 minutes AFTER WQRT powers down. The WYLL daytime pattern is roughly equivalent to the old WOWO pattern before Inner City castrated them...effectively around 80 kw in this direction...meaning their critcal hours signal in PM drive is A LOT more damaging than in the morning. WYLL's night pattern goes pretty much straight north. If there wasn't a bunch of construction equipment around their site due to road construction, their night signal would be radiating less in this direction than it has been over the last three years.

BTW...when WQRT has run day power at night during equipment maintenance hours after midnight, the 5kw signal is plenty enough to beat back the WYLL QRM. Maybe jry should petition the FCC to run day power 24/7?
