WQRT RealTalk/Furman factor

The daytime signal might be OK when WYLL is at night pattern, but during critical hours WQRT gets killed, even when it's at daytime pattern. With the sun up, and conditions right for skywave, I can't hear Furman at 5:30 in the afternoon near Indian Hill when WQRT is running the full 5K. It's just physics, folks. That signal is just not gonna cut it in drive times for 6 months of the year. They need to try a two-site operation (from WDJO's site or WNOP's site) during critical and night hours. Better yet, get WYLL correct or buy an FM.

Re: Morning v Afternoon argument: You are all missing a key element in the mix...in the morning, WYLL is still at NIGHT pattern/power for another 30-45 minutes after WQRT raises to day power and pattern. In the afternoon, WYLL is at DAY power for 30-45 minutes AFTER WQRT powers down. The WYLL daytime pattern is roughly equivalent to the old WOWO pattern before Inner City castrated them...effectively around 80 kw in this direction...meaning their critcal hours signal in PM drive is A LOT more damaging than in the morning. WYLL's night pattern goes pretty much straight north. If there wasn't a bunch of construction equipment around their site due to road construction, their night signal would be radiating less in this direction than it has been over the last three years.

BTW...when WQRT has run day power at night during equipment maintenance hours after midnight, the 5kw signal is plenty enough to beat back the WYLL QRM. Maybe jry should petition the FCC to run day power 24/7?

Well, we did file a request for relief and its still banging around at the portals. I think the more interesting development is Salem's request to make the night site their auxiliary day site. If you look at the patters, you'll see a similarity between their current daytime pattern from Des Plaines and the new 16KW Aux patten. Now, if i was sitting on multi million dollar dirt near O'hare, i would do what they are doing. Put the aux up on the air and see how many complaints i get. Maybe i'd put the aux up and start tweaking it a bit. A few adjustments, crank in a little more juice and see how close i can come to the same coverage from this site. Get it licensed and sell the north site. This move will just about clean up WQRT's critical hours. The new night site throws a bit less power at us, supposedly, than the old site did at night. 660 MV/M at one KM, i do believe.
I did notice less noise during the "criticals" on my last trip from Dayton.

How about upping the daytime power? We need another 50,000 Watt signal in town. Make 1160 The New Big One.

It'll never happen. But, we have some replacement work that we couldn't do in the fall that we will do in the spring, that may help things a bit.

We're making sure that we hit our predicted contour and that will probably be enough to get the job done. Heck, it sounds good, just south of Dayton. If we can fatten it up a bit, a little more signal on the sides, i think all will be well.
I may have to get my legal to knock on a few doors at the Commission. Our request was filed in 06.
Of course, back when i owned WLQV in Detroit, our relief only took 18 years and 3 owners. It was the oldest issue on the docket and probably the longest running issue. In the end we went from a net of 2 KW (night) to 10 KW. 18 years and a million bucks.
I am happy to say that we were the ones to ram rod it through the Commission and get it built. I pray that this doesn't take that long.

Dennis Miller replaces Dr. Laura. Excellent move, and nice to see you took my advice from a while back. :)

JRY, would you know what protection, if any, is required for the Fenton MI station on 1160?

I think i mentioned before that we were one of the first groups to sign on for Miller. In Cincy and in Lexington.
Cumulus hosed us and took the show. Then, they did the usual and moved him around. Finally, they bounced the show in both markets. WW1 came back, hat in hand. Naturally, i reminded them of that.

Now, on to the station that i used to live 1 mile from.....

They are moving their daytime site to the Detroit Suburbs and will be operating with 15KW. Fenton will be the night site, 1KW.
What is funny is, Sima Birach usually signs off at 6PM. Sometimes they leave the transmitter on and walk away.
At any rate, WCXI should be enjoying the same protections as any class B station. I'll tell you what, when they do actually power down, you can hear WYLL and its pretty clear. When i look at the CDBS, i notice that there are a bunch of Apps. listing both Fenton and Wixom. Maybe they'll be abandoning the night site in Fenton at some point.

WQRT's night signal has been a lot better in Sharonville since I came back down from college last week. I don't know if the snow is helping the groundwave, but I can actually make out what Phil Hendrie is saying now. WYLL is still interfering, so there is definitely room for improvement.

and a blog that nobody ever heard of getting snarky about the popularity of your station is a tad...odd. The survey has a grand total of four votes, and that's including mine.

Oh well...everyone is "big time" in their own mind, I guess.

Hey, they're up to nine votes now!

In all seriousness, I think they raise some good points. Furman is great and all, and anything is an improvement over what was in that time slot, but I get the feeling he is just making his demo reel. Here's hoping the morning show is more consistent than his stint in the evenings. Pre-empted for Simon Kenton basketball via telephone???

The Simon Kenton people probably pay for their time.

30 pages for this thread are probably twenty-nine more than necessary. You guys who work there, spend less time here and more time making the station better...honestly, this is Time-Wasting 101. Listeners...if you like it, then listen. If not, don't. Life's too short. Nuff said.

The nice thing about a thread is that you don't have to read it or post; and what a person does with their time is their business, not yours. Nuff said.

Well, Troublemaan makes a good point. Is that like the Marvin Gaye, Trouble Man?
If the Simon Kenton line gets fixed then the broadcast will come off of a Comrex Matrix, greatly improving the sound quality.
Andy in the Morning? I think he will do just fine.

It is less about who cares, and more about who pays. Cash flow and profit are good words.

Heck, even non commericials need money.

I Can Gelp...that was a hit by Billy Rwan in the 70s, right?

I Can Help, Billy Swan.....

Right.

Didn't someone start a rumor that he was really Elvis or something like that?

Sometime recently, the cume for this thread, just under 12,600 views as I write this, surpassed the reported cume for WQRT.

Congratulations to thread founder Darius C, all the contributors since then, and everyone else who made it possible.

Furman in the Mornings

Finally...local sports talk -- and a touch of Furman's cutting entertainment in the morning...certainly gets me up and off to work...those 2 hours fly...and by the way, I was lol when he cracked on Chick Ludwig from 1530 this morning with his "gosh" talk....vintage Furman ...there's no one on sports talk radio better....
