WRKO Replaces Rush

Question: Is it just coincidence that WXKS started ID-ing as "Rush Radio" on Friday at 3 PM, right after the final Rush Limbaugh show aired on WRKO?

No co-incidence at all. And how about this:

--WEEI lays off Pete Sheppard
--WRKO hires Charley Manning
Yes, RKO will be paying a lot less to have Manning on than to pay Rush but I wonder; RKO knew
they may have to hire someone to replace Rush, and to free up salary...bye Pete.
bostonradio tweeted that Mikey Adams' prod. J-Pod will produce Manning.

and by 4 PM WRKO was promo'ing Manning at 12 followed by Howie at 3, and over on 1200 they were running Rush promoting himself and the station.

I'm waiting for WRKO to play a Rush promo or ID, because they still play "Home of the Boston Red Sox" stuff on occasion even though they were sent packing back to 850.

i was subjected to listening to kiss 108 today while working and i heard matty in the morning say listen to rush on Monday on wxks AM so cross promotion to really get the word out huh?

I don't get all the press on Rush?
Politics aside, his ratings are poor, 18th in his daypart.

Why would you marquee your station on any one person? Foolish
Besides, with the drug problems and recent chest pains, who knows???

Nationwide he's still #1 by a long margin. What CC is doing is taking the conservative format and
wrapping it around their strongest performer. The model is to have only 1 (perhaps no) local show,
then go with Beck, Rush, Hannity, and so on. In some cities it could work well esp. with little or
no local talent to speak of, or should I say in cities where the local talent is elsewhere (WRKO,
WTKK, WBZ) but they think they can sell ads with a mostly syndicated lineup. The lineup at least
would be a bit stronger than outfits like Salem Communications have to offer, as Rush, Beck,
and Hannity are supposedly #1, 2, and 3 in their demo for poli-talkers (syndie). Low cost (having only
one local host) but they get clearance for their strongest performers--their ads get exposure.

Thought I heard a little while back that Rush and Howie had the strongest ratings on RKO but maybe
it depends on the age group. A post on SaveWRKO blog mentioned that maybe Entercom Boston wanted
someone local in that slot but Entercom corporate wanted to stay with Rush; and perhaps CC quoted
an outrageous price to Ent. to renew Rush and they walked away...thus setting up Rush Radio

As for his health, who knows, but if he suddenly should pass on they'll just rebrand as Patriot Talk or
some other type of name. I know he's had health problems but I can't picture a Michael Jackson
situation happening with Rush Hudson Limbaugh.

"Even On Drugs....Rush Is Right"--bumper sticker seen on conservative site

Using simple math, there are 300 million living in the U.S.
A big deal is made he get's 5 million listeners a week.
So this means 295 million are not listening. Just sayin'

Seems like a smart move to debut the format with Limbaugh reruns in AM drive, but is keeping AM drive on reruns a good strategy over the long term? Anyone heard any rumors about a live host for AM drive (either local or syndie)?

When Salem debuted conservatalk on 1150, they had Don Feder as a local host. Had to be the MOST boring AM drive show I have EVER heard. Is there a more sleep-inducing voice than Feder's on any station anywhere? In fact, does anyone know anybody who is not on radio who can put them to sleep faster than Feder could? That program had to be the sickest of all sick radio jokes. I think CCU has more sense than to go after Feder for AM drive on WXKS (AM). But by the time they are ready to name a host, Finneran should be at liberty--and maybe ready to work for short money too. Problem is that, though he's better than Feder, he's also pretty damned boring. However, he's got a good built-in positioner: "Tom Finneran--better than Feder." Of course, anybody who can breathe on a mirror and make it go foggy could use that line ;)

The alleged numbers Rush is getting is something like 15-20 million a week and I don't know if that means every day that number tunes in, or at one point or another in the week someone will tune in and that number
represents the whole week. What was to happen was an April 1 debut and CC keeps saying they will have a local show which supposedly will debut around then. They were to be aiming for a local host. (They could
poss. simulcast the local shows on their WTAG or WHJJ or something)

Newspaper columnists don't necessarily have radio voices (McPhee comes to mind). I do know that Brian
McGrory of the Globe was at one time her co-host; he was OK but prob needed a co-host...the Globe's
Alex Beam has done radio once in awhile (at least I know he was heard on "Jerry Williams' farewell show"
on RKO, calling in to speak with Jerry, at least) Who knows, re: Finneran; I thought his contract was due for
renewal last month.

The 1200 lineup for mornings on weekends is still up in the air AFAIK and I wonder if they could put some
other Premiere hosts on. Jesse Jackson or Randi Rhodes unlikely as they're not conservative but they could
offer the likes of: Dr Dean Edell (not politics), Bob and Tom ("optional Saturday edition"--maybe a rerun), etc.
Much of the weekend is reruns of weekday shows though they will have Bill Handel On The Law and
Bill Cunningham on Sunday nights, and the Art Bell editions of Coast to Coast overnight/weekends.

The sched page at their site says "Full program lineup begins Monday, March 8th at noon, after Rush Limbaugh's premiere on Rush Radio 1200." So don't expect Glenn Beck til the next day

In recent years the weak-signalled attempts at mostly conservative talk included
WBPS 890 "The Boston Talk Party"
WMEX 1060 (briefly had Jerry Williams, Marge Clapprood, etc.--a revival of the old RKO?)
WTTT 1150 (aforementioned Feder show IIRC, then mostly Salem shows + Hannity)--
"Boston's Conservative Talk"

WXKS signal should do well within 128 by night, and beyond that fairly well by day. Driving on I-93
last night at 8 pm, I tried 1200 and it was pretty strong. They can reach a lot of people just within
that range, though in outlying areas you may have trouble esp. at night. So fans of the shows involved
could pull in stations from Manchester; NH seacoast; Worc., Prov, or the Cape. Or even NYC w/ WABC, etc

I think the 15 to 20 million number is a cume. If so, as I understand it, anyone who listens five days a week counts as five people. I wonder how many times per week the AVERAGE listener tunes in. Gotta be more than once. Gotta be less than five. If the average listener tunes in three times a week, Limbaugh reaches ~7 million listeners a week, tops. Certainly not a majority of the US adult population but also not chickenfeed.

Clearly by saying Limbaugh's audience is lower than some want to think, Dan is exposing himself as a moonbat. /sarcasm

Rush's station list now correctly lists WXKS 1200 but they still list "WXTK-FM 94.9" (sic) on the Cape.
They went to 95.1 long ago.

Now a minute or so before the launch, still running the loop...wonder if this will continue right up to
12:06 or so (no news?). I'm wondering if their news breaks, for now, will be just promos for shows...

they started his show at 12:06pm then at about 1230 or so they did a news brief from the rush radio 1200 news center or something like that with George brown then back to rush

When the orig announcement came it said there would be "local talk and news". It could be someone at the CC building or maybe metro-shadow is doing it (heard mention of some MA news). Maybe doing TOH and bottom of hour.

I remember when Salem had conservative talk on 1150 WTTT. You had the same people (Scott Pike, maybe
Chris Farmer? Fama?) doing metro-shadow on both WRKO and WTTT.
Yeah who knows, it could be someone at the CC bldg doing it. Maybe they'll pick up a network 'cast
at night. Again Premiere syndies Fox News Radio; maybe they could run Fox News on WXKS as well

http://premiereradio.com/shows/view/Premiere_Fox_News_Radio_Network.html

Same guy is on now at 1 pm...local headlines, a (sponsored) traffic report (as in, a car dealer is right in
the name of the report)...forecast...and now the stories. George Brown

I'd heard Mike Adams' prod J-Pod working for Manning...now Howie and Sandy saying they have J-Pod 4-7 pm
(expect to hear more sound cuts like "Don't Tase me Bro")...not sure if he's also working for Mikey. Come Sox season (and now w/ Celts) not many night hrs for Mikey anyway

Howie did briefly say, re: Rush, "They took it off to put it on their own station" and basically there was nothing RKO could do, etc., that's the way it is.

Dan:

Actually......I think there IS. His name is Peter Gay, and he does a Monday through Friday brokered-time "rip-and-read" type newscast on Providence market station 1320-WARL. I believe the time slot is 6:30 am to 7:30 am.

I swear to Almighty God that this man's flat, dull, monotone voice could put people to sleep faster than the world's best sleeping pill! ;D
