WRKO suspends talk show host Carr

... about the money situation with WRKO/Entercom and the possibilities that exist. WRKO's signal problems,
the cost of spots to pay for Howie, RKO and EEI's competition on FM, and so on...

So when will Arbitron reveal how well or how poorly Limbaugh is doing
on 1200? I find it hard to believe that, billboards notwithstanding,
his ratings on the new station will be as good as those he was getting
on WRKO's bigger signal. Those same Arbitrons should also reveal how
much, if anything, the loss of the Limbaugh lead-in has affected the
size of Carr's audience. Not that Carr was contemplating remaining
with Entercom after his contract expires in 2012, but I wonder how
much Carr was thinking about how the reduced ratings resulting from
the loss of the Limbaugh lead-in would affect the offer Entercom will
make him in 2012. Even though he has no intention of remaining with
Entercom after 2012, what Entercom offers is likely to matter to Carr
because it will affect how much he is likely to be able to get from
Greater Media or Clear Channel.

Great points...we'll see ratings and how each station is doing with that noon slot. Ratings won't be as
good due to signal problems though many within 128 may get 1200 fairly well (at least maybe in
their cars, but at home or work it's another story...?) And the lead-in can be important though some,
like me, tuned in at 3 and didn't usually care to tune into Rush

Carr: Suspension No Big Deal

WRKO suspends talk show host Carr

Howie Carr was suspended for his attacks on 680 WRKO for talking down on the AM side. He is not a big fan of AM radio. He's much more comfortable on the FM side.
For an example. For the loyal Howie Carr listeners West of Boston, 680 AM starts to fade out at sunset and he's always saying that one day he'll work at a REAL FM radio station; that WRKO is a ZOMBIE radio station, saying that on the air which resulted the managemnt to suspend Howie Carr for one week.
They felt embarrassed by Howie Carr's insults towards WRKO. :'(

How can Carr be "more confortable" on FM radio when he's never hosted a program on FM radio?

I might be wrong but I think he'd tried 96.9 FM, but things never worked out!!

But he was never on the air there - he was close, but did not make the break because his contract with Entercom contained a clause that granted them right of first refusal and they didn't refuse. So, Howie has never had his show on FM. Perhaps he would be more comfortable on FM, but we won't know until/if it happens.

We mean he'd like to be on a flagship/Boston station that's on FM. He actually has some affiliates on FM:
Cape Cod, Newport NH, Bangor

On FM you don't deal with a signal that fades at sunset, or interference. There are places I drive where WRKO
is obliterated by high tension wires such as Rt 128 Peabody nr Centennial Drive. As for signal, I remember one
Martin Luther King Day where I was off from work and WRKO had a Celts game at 3 pm. I was out for a drive
and heard Howie on WEIM 1280 (was in that area). But I headed back toward Boston and was unable to hear Howie
(WCRN was not yet an affiliate) in many places. Finally the game ended and I could hear him again.

Last night at work I was going back and forth between extra inning Sox on WEEI and overtime B's on WBZ-FM. To hear Sox, I have to place one radio near edge of building and beam signal to my Walkman and even then I have to do all kinds of contortions to get the signal in. But as I hit the button for 98.5, nice and clear. (I should note the night before, WRKO had the Sox and while I did have to still use the mini FM transmitter it was a lot easier to hear. I didn't
have to put the radio at the edge of the building. In fact someone with a boombox was able to pick up WRKO
very nicely...

AM radio can be good for certain things like nighttime DX, etc., but in cases like this, AM radio can stink. I hope
Howie gets on a nice powerful FM like WTKK, or AM 1200 (admittedly at work that could be a tough get but I could
find a way to tape and hear later; but WTKK would be best). And I hope the Sox could be put on a powerful
signal like 93.7 (or even 680, which is OK at night for me). I kid around on messageboards about "WEEI's
feeble signal". Guess what: thanks to the pattern change, for many it IS feeble (and I wonder if Worc.
listeners are having a tough time getting Sox with the loss of 830. Maybe 1080 works for them. But what if you
work nights and 1080 is a tough get?)
