WRKZ 99.7 Rock Town Hall Meeting

The Blitz will come back and I'm willing to bet it will come back as an Active Rock.

And to throw it out there...

Grego wasn't fired because he was late (even though I would've fired him, because that's a huge event where if you show up THAT late, you deserve to be canned).... he was fired because he went on stage when Fish told him not to AND on top of that, got in Hal's face and got an attitude with him in front of many listeners. Listen to the podcast.

Maybe the listening public will feel warm and fuzzy about getting the "power" to make decisions on "your" rock station (which is taught in Radio Consultancy 101... (you+your)), but anyone in the business knows that this is a long and drawn out process to make any sort of changes at any radio station. The BlitRock has the advantage of being a small station, and yet they haven't shown that kind of agility to make changes any faster than a Clear Channel or Emmis.

Personally, I think there should be a write-in vote for what to call 99.7. As a listener, if I want to call it:

99.7 - The Block
or
99.7 - The Ritz

Then go for it.

I would go for The Block, in honor of the brick that is tied to the station's feet that is drowning them in the Scioto River. Understanding this from inside the industry, I see a desperate station that is trying anything to survive the Mnick Machete.

Yes, the B.S. staff verbal high-fives were canned, but I can't get over the fact that of all of the changes that they could _possibly_ make, what do they do?

...they end up rehashing the same old station bits: Local Stuff, Choose it or Lose It... Not 1 new idea in the bunch. At least steal something from a station in God awful Souix Falls or Billings, Montana and call it your own. If you're keeping score, it's geriatric DJ's-1 / Creativity-0. They're throwing 15 year old 99.7 Rock hard (pun intended) crap against the wall to see if it will stick. The thuds you're hearing are the turds hitting the floor and landing next to the latest ratings. You're telling me that after Fish's own radiotraks.com consulting company tanked his own station, they're going to keep going at it? Wow.

Change the name, pretend that you're giving the power to the people... It's still not going to change much at 99.7 The Block as long as the same tired people are in the same positions that they've been in for so many years. I agree completely with the post that stated that they should be going after _potential_ audience, rather than the existing listeners.

Good luck!

Very well stated. After my vote (like that matters), I listened to the 19 music style survey and didn't hear one song or band the The Blitz/Rock has not already played in the past. Basically they put out there what is already in the music library and asked you to rate those from 1-5. Nothing new, nothing fresh, nothing original. Best thing for 99.7 as a signal at this point is to replace Hal or sell the station.

I like that the shows coming back, better then the no shows that they had before all of this.

But if they try to go back to what they used to be, how long would it even last? When K-rock in New York came back it didn't last long. Neither did B96 or whatever they called it in Pittsburgh. Who knows what this station will be 5 years from now....

I think they did listen to people commenting, I sent them an e-mail and the CEO of NABCO replied personally to me, mentioned the stuff I mentioned in the e-mail and eveything.

And a lot of people did want a show for local music, a metal show, and choose it or lose it to return.

I just think they took advantage of the whole thing and thought they might as well put it on the day the diary week started as Nu_Roo said during the time people listen in the radio the most. The whole vote for the name of the station, I think this is all just to build hype. Come on, does the name The Rock even have a chance? They got to know that. The results show, I do agree with Nu_Roo that something wasn't right about it. The high fives, website crashing that fast. Would that many people really try to jump onto the website at once? For real, it just to vote for a name for the station? And a lot of people where probably driving home from work during 3pm. I'm not saying it's all lie, it could be true. I just think they wanted to build a bunch a hype about all of this to boost thier ratings.

But I don't really think they had all of this planned before the Meeting the started at the end of March.

Short verison of my last post:

I think they are listening to everyone and are making actions based on thier responses out of it, they are just doing in a way to help build hype and help thier ratings.

106.7 is now calling themselves "New Rock, Radio 1067"... Heard both the DJ and some of the imaging saying it earlier today.
They were still playing some "Columbus' Rock Alternative" liners as well... Playlist doesn't seem to have shifted.

Looks like somebody wants in on the old Blitz positioning just in case. :)

Yep. They've been using "Columbus' only new rock station" for a few weeks now.

This is only tangentially on-topic, but on Mix 107.9 I have heard "MY Mix 107.9" a few times, presumably to preempt entry of a "MY[frequency]" Hot AC of the type that is doing fantastic for CC in some markets under PPM.

Hey Saga, the guys on 5th Ave are CC/Columbus, not CC/Normal-Market, so you have NO need to worry about any logical shifts such as to a "MY 93.3."  Even if local CC management had a rare brain-cell-activation moment and realized the potential, they would probably be afraid of hurting WNCI instead of realizing the potential to lock up women even more.  Never mind that CC has HIGHLY successful MY+CHR combos in several markets.

Actually, CC/Columbus did have one brain-cell-activation moment lately, namely FINALLY coming up with a grasp-able positioning for the Brew:  Classic Rock's Next Generation.  For once, something people can really UNDERSTAND, unlike "Real. Fun. Rock."  I don't care if the latter positioning tested.  It was weird.

I took the survey, too bad the newest music they had was like 7-8 years old. I do see them switching back to the Blitz, and maybe dropping the 70's and 80's rock. I do not see a big switch in any of the other music. For some reason still feel they need to hear Metallica every hour. Funny the people that want Metallica every hour complain about QFM replaying the same music. They fail to realize that they are becoming the people that listen to QFM, just that their music is from the 80's and 90's instead of the 70's.
99.7 needs to scrap all the music from the 90's, but after listening o their samples that seems to be all they are focused on. Too bad as if this what they decide to play, I'll stick with 106.7 and 101.1. Between the two I hear most of the newest music out there.

I look for them to go back to the way it was right before they switched to the rock, with the occasional song from the 80's thrown in there. They never really gave it a chance, it was like that for a few weeks and then the switch to the rock happend.

They'll once again be The Blitz. If not i'd really be shocked. Sorry, but "The Rock" sounds too generic to me. "The Blitz" just has a nice ring to it.

I always wondered if the term Blitz was originally chosen in part because it's a football term and so would appeal to Buckeye fans.

One of the most telling facts about this all being mostly a charade is that the discussion is on a THURSDAY (start of diary week) at 3, one of the prime times to try to draw some listener attention and diary mentions.
Just noticed that, the reveal party they are having happens on a Thursday starting at 3:00pm. They are definatly trying to get big ratings out of this whole thing.

Whatever happens, I don't think they will have a new local morning talk show on 99.7 and don't think Bob and Tom will stay there. Dropping The Rock
for The Blitz is a given. That said, will they buy back the old call letters?

I think someones already got them, so they probably won't be able to get them back.
