WRLX FM Going Spanish

Well that was the shorest unemployment in my life. For those who've sent emails wondering what I'm going to do...I will be hosting the Newsradio 1290 WJNO morning show "The Palm Beaches Morning Report" beginning Monday, December 10th. Shouldn't be a tough transition since I hosted the same show for many, many years. Thanks for the emails and well wishes.

Jim Edwards

With all the sad Christmas firings and such, it is great to hear a positve story. Congratulations! And it sounds like fun, too.

Hey AM 960.....nice try at a free commercial for your radio station on this board. You just lowered yourself to the level of "Cheap" Channel. I tried listening to your station this week. Is the best that you could do in the afternoon Dick Farrell? He sucks! He can't run a board and talk at the same time. Jingles playing over songs and commercials. Sweepers playing over his live elements on mic. Doesn't he know how to pot up and pot down.....that's Radio 101. And he talks and talks and talks with no content instead of running a music sweep. Plus he is a right winger on tiny WPBR three mornings a week and sucks there. I even heard him say the wrong call letters on 960. Most stations won't let you be on another station in another daypart on the same day unless it is under the same company flag. And how many of you remember when he and his convicted felon/former lawyer sidekick were on 640/WJNA around midnight on Fridays and Saturdays pimping young girls from former iron curtain countries and charging thousands of dollars? Then Josie Lambiet of The Palm Beach Post did an article on how once WJNA management got wind of this scam they threw them both out the door. And they were buying the time and still got fired!!! So wise up AM 960 and get a real talent on in the afternoons instead of just trying to get a free promotion on this board.

They've got problems with the satellite...thats why the liners and sweepers are playing like that.

Well radiosgreatest1....how would you know that? I guess you actually must be Dick Farrell. And if its a satellite problem, then why doesn't the live show in the morning have the same problems? But more importantly, that doesn't explain everything else I addressed. How do you explain that Dick? Believe me, I have asked other folks about afternoons on 960 and they have the same observations that I had. Don't be so insecure Dick.....maybe they could put you back on Saturdays begging for calls on the now defunct Seaview Swap Shop which probably lasted longer than farrell will in afternoons on 960 unless you are paying to be on the air.

Glory Days.....I sooooo agree with you....what a joke! But with the right programming and a little direction they could be a good little local-oriented station. But I think you have to agree with me that Dick Farrell has got to go. If you haven't heard him, take a listen (although I doubt you will be able to stand it for more than five minutes) any weekday afternoon at 3PM and see if you have the same opinion of him that I and many folks I have talked to have of him. Plus they think that since Classy 92.1 went Spanish that they will corner the market on the death plus ten demo. Don't they understand that's why Classy 92.1 abandoned that format....it might get ratings but at the end of the day its billings that count. And believe me, the death plus ten demo or as I affectionately call it "The Three For Three Crowd----Three Dollar Dinners At Three In The Afternoon" does not spend money and advertisers know it. If they did spend money don't you think Classy 92.1's billings would stand on their merit and they never would disturb the format?

Dont congratulate Jim Edwards so fast and think it's a great story around the holidays. If Jim is moving to morning on WJNO, then what happens to the current host? Somebody is being "displaced." After all, it's Clear Channel

In fact, no one on the show is going away. We're just reorganizing and expanding it. Jon Howe, the current host, is moving to the news anchor's chair and is really happy about it. All of us will be spending many minutes on the air during the show.

Hey Omega....first of all they weren't the ratings that came out today, they were the Fall Phase II trends. The ratings book comes out next month. Secondly, there is no way to tell if going Spanish has hurt or helped 92.1/WRLX because the flip came midway during the Phase II trends period. It will take several months to see what, if any, the flip's effect was. The only exception to this was when 640/AM flipped from music to that awful excuse they call talk radio back in the fall of '06. In that case the effects were immediate.....they lost whatever ratings they had right from the get-go. And they still haven't learned their lesson. Time will tell the story on 92.1/WRLX, but my guess is that they will be singing the old Rolling Stones song "Time Is On My Side" with the lyrics that said "you'll come running back to me", meaning don't look for the Spanish thing to succeed. But I could be wrong....nobody knows for sure right now.

the new rattings came out and 92.1 is still # 1 did they make a mistake by flipping to spanish?

WRLX was not #1 in 25-54. In fact, nearly all the audience was solidly 55+, and the station had a power ratio below 0.5-

There are often over 5 shares in the PB book for Miami FMs in 25-54, and there are likely many more for a decent local signal to grow from. A good Spanish language station can get, in South Florida, power ratios well above a 1.0, so if they do not botch the format, it is very likely the station will do vastly better than the unprofitable old format.

Like I said, numbers are just that....numbers. Its all about the bottom line and Clear (Cheap) Channel is notorious for chopping expenses (and in the process ruining dedicated employees lives) and still a lot of them still lose. So we will just wait and see what happens with 92.1. If history is any dictator, Clear Channel will botch this one. My prediction is that WRMF is becoming and will be the dominant force in West Palm Beach. They have tweaked their format brilliantly and the numbers over the last several periods show this.
