WRXP MUSIC DIRECTOR: ON THE WAY OUT

magicjellybeans said:
Why does every station Have to have a format thats FAMILIAR?Honestly I'd rather see q104 or 92.3 die than hear 101.9 go away.Hearing the same crap over and over is LAME!Hearing a variety of differnt music (even though I know its ROCK music whatever way you shine it) is neat.Personally if they interviewed people in NYC and selected the music they like then every station would be Ethnic meaning Spanish,or Urban.
101.9 should steer more alternative rock with a tiny select favorite classic rock and AAA songs ,now that would be awesome! Today I heard ALOT more classic rock than oddball songs on 101.9 .....Is that a good thing? 107.1 the Peak is very close to 101.9 to me,what you all think?

Q's not gonna go away FOR SURE and 92.3 - well...they're STILL trying to figure out WHAT TO THE HECK they're gonna do with that station - and as for 101.9, FOUR words, baby - "Format of the Month" - watch for another format change SOONER than you think, ESPECIALLY with the PD "taking the last train to the Coast...", to quote Don McLean and "American Pie"...

I was listening to 'RXP on Saturday night/Sunday morning and heard a Strokes song segue into Elton John! Now if that doesn't constitute absurdity, I don't know what does!

Did you like both songs?

I don't think fans of that Strokes song are interested in then hearing an Elton John one, or vice versa. There are plenty of stations in the New York metropolitan area that play Elton John, so I don't think 'RXP, if it genuinely wants to distinguish itself from those other stations, should also play him.

I should've added that a Mott the Hoople or Todd Rundgren song would've fit nicely after that Strokes song, but not Elton John!

You're getting it twisted. RXP's problem isn't whether the songs it plays are familiar or unfamiliar. Its problem is that its playlist is all over the place. While that may be absolutely fantastic for a non-commercial or college station, it's not going to lead to success as a commercial station, as the ratings have borne out. When you segue from the Strokes to Elton John, you're reaching two completely, radically different types of rock music fans, reflecting the radical change in music. Very few people will sit through all of that, and that's proven in the station's low TSL (time spent listening), since it is obvious that most listeners can't stick with the station for more than a couple of songs.

You are also contradicting yourself. On the one hand, you seem to be saying that those who are criticizing RXP are claiming that it doesn't play enough familiar songs. Then on the other hand, you point out yourself that RXP plays lots of classic rock. And yet, RXP's problem, as I mentioned above, isn't familiarity. A lot of the music it plays is as familiar as it gets. The whole mix, however, going from hair metal to classic rock to nu metal to new wave to indie rock to grunge rock to AAA, is all over the map. And for a station trying to portray itself as "hip" and targeting the younger demographic, it sure won't achieve that with Led Zeppelin, Elton John and Rod Stewart on its playlist.

As for 107.1 The Peak, it doesn't sound much like RXP at all. The music is much, much more focused and closer to a traditional AAA station than RXP, which defies categorization. The music flows well together...no segues from the Strokes to Elton John or from Linkin Park to Rod Stewart. Huge difference.

At least agree that the presentation of RXP is similar to that of The Peak.

Totally agree. Today they played Snow Patrol followed by Green Day (that's fine) but then followed Green Day with Ted Nugent?!?!? Most listeners usually say "No thanks" at that point.

And so does WDST, yep! WRXP does copied WDST.

I hope Emmis will sell off this station ESPN Radio to take over 101.9 to carry an FM all-sports station. We need Mike & Mike, Michael Kay, Steven Smith and a few others to the FM station soon.

Been having too many of those magic jelly beans again? Funny how you're now blaming the PPM for RXP's failures, when the PPM is supposed to be rock-friendly.

THAT'S what they get for not playing Iggy & The Stooges and The New York Dolls!
How can they? They're still trying to make up their mind as to what kind of station they should be!!

Never mind him... he's still obsessed with wanting to hear has-been rock bands on that station...

lalumia is a bit of a nudnick, but he does have a line on some seminal acts.

Iggy is alive and well-especially the Stooges and his Bowie-related stuff. No has been.

To leave a marginal station in NY to return home?
Why the attitude?

he was the program director on 101 kgb san diego back in the late 80s.made the station into a top 5 for 8 years.then he left.he told coe louis of kgb,he misses the great weather and being on a legandary radio station like 101 kgb san diego.

Go back to CD 101.9! That station was awesome. Why did they change format anyway? There are too many huge rock stations to compete with.

Where are these many other "huge rock stations" that you speak of? Care to point me in the right direction?

Q 104.3 (NYC)
92.3 K Rock (NYC)

107.1 (Westchester)

no hard feelings..just stating my opinion.
