Why does every station Have to have a format thats FAMILIAR?Honestly I'd rather see q104 or 92.3 die than hear 101.9 go away.Hearing the same crap over and over is LAME!Hearing a variety of differnt music (even though I know its ROCK music whatever way you shine it) is neat.Personally if they interviewed people in NYC and selected the music they like then every station would be Ethnic meaning Spanish,or Urban.
101.9 should steer more alternative rock with a tiny select favorite classic rock and AAA songs ,now that would be awesome! Today I heard ALOT more classic rock than oddball songs on 101.9 .....Is that a good thing? 107.1 the Peak is very close to 101.9 to me,what you all think?
You're getting it twisted. RXP's problem isn't whether the songs it plays are familiar or unfamiliar. Its problem is that its playlist is all over the place. While that may be absolutely fantastic for a non-commercial or college station, it's not going to lead to success as a commercial station, as the ratings have borne out. When you segue from the Strokes to Elton John, you're reaching two completely, radically different types of rock music fans, reflecting the radical change in music. Very few people will sit through all of that, and that's proven in the station's low TSL (time spent listening), since it is obvious that most listeners can't stick with the station for more than a couple of songs.
You are also contradicting yourself. On the one hand, you seem to be saying that those who are criticizing RXP are claiming that it doesn't play enough familiar songs. Then on the other hand, you point out yourself that RXP plays lots of classic rock. And yet, RXP's problem, as I mentioned above, isn't familiarity. A lot of the music it plays is as familiar as it gets. The whole mix, however, going from hair metal to classic rock to nu metal to new wave to indie rock to grunge rock to AAA, is all over the map. And for a station trying to portray itself as "hip" and targeting the younger demographic, it sure won't achieve that with Led Zeppelin, Elton John and Rod Stewart on its playlist.
As for 107.1 The Peak, it doesn't sound much like RXP at all. The music is much, much more focused and closer to a traditional AAA station than RXP, which defies categorization. The music flows well together...no segues from the Strokes to Elton John or from Linkin Park to Rod Stewart. Huge difference.
