WRXP & WXRK : Who Will Win?

I believe they'll BOTH win - two words, baby - format change... :)

Andrea

One should go with classic spanish and the other with hatian music to satisfy NYC ,face it the pirates are right!
Rock in NY is not right ,neither is smooth jazz or country or sports,One of them does any of the formats that are
mainstream they will flop!Give the people what they want,if they didnt want it,they wouldnt be pirating.
Heck, even reggae would be good,I hear 5 stations "that dont belong" doing these odd formats so far.
Maybe they should take a poll in the NY times and see what people want, instead of guessing??

How about Pulse 102 or 92 and New Country 101.9 or 92.3

A win-win on all counts...ESPECIALLY if you're Tony Santiago or have ANYTHING to do with the NY Dance Music Coalition (LOVE you, Tony!! ;) ;) ;))

Andrea

let me tell you it would be a blessing to get pulse on either 92.3 or 101.9, don't have to continue on I-80 headin to the Paterson/Paramus area when I come down to jersey just to hear pulse.

I've enjoyed 'RXP coming into N.Y.C. from R.I. every time I've had it on. I agree with the previous post except I can put the antenna back up near the Ct./R.I. border.

From the Crain's Article

"WRXP was ranked 28th with a 0.9 share in November. As CD101.9, the station was often in the top 10"

Solution. Return CD101.9 as a "jockless" Smooth jazz station. At least get some better ratings Billing before selling or leasing out the station. They still should have imaging sweepers tracks so they wouldn't have to spend for new, plus running Jockless would save $$$.

Would Emmis keep RXP on even with a 0.5 or a 0.1?

It's almost been 1 year

How can you enjoy it? It's so frustrating. They play a good group of songs you can't hear anywhere else on the NYC dial but then revert back to dinosaur rock that both Q and now K-Rock (which is about 70% classic rock this point) are cramming down our throats.

Then you should hear how bad rock is here! We have a good amount of stations but it's the same 7 bands. Forget it if the Rolling Stones comes to Boston because they're all over 3 stations: WZLX, WROR-FM & (I think) WODS. I can say I wasn't impressed with K-Rock & not really Q104 either. WRXP's jocks seemed to make the station sound like a laid-back rocker from the '70s (from what I've heard as I was born in 1979 so it's all airchecks that I've heard) which is a nice change of pace from the in-your-face crap of other rock stations. Y'know, if it's not "extreeeeeeeeme" then it isn't cool (or so it seems). N.Y.C. isn't my home market but I'm just a little bit surprised that K-Rock hasn't been jettisoned for CBS to go Top 40 up against Z100.

Anyway, the next time I'm in N.Y.C., the radio will be on 'RXP if they haven't flipped (which I hope they don't), Jazz 88, or if I want to thrill my not-so-inner-radio-geek, Pulse 87 (the T.V. station that's a radio station!). Otherwise, it'll probably be C.D.s or MP3s.

I sampled the rock stations in Boston, and I have to say that they are all far superior than anything in NYC.

WAAF is probably the closest to an Active Rocker - they're a little on the safe side compared to a station like WZBH (93.5 The Beach) in Delaware, but they still play more new music and some harder stuff, unlike the pathetic K-Rock ... they're at least playing Mudvayne and Slipknot.

The last time I was in Boston, WBCN was more Active, but now they sound like a CBS take on Modern Rock. I was surprised at a lot of their selections. The main problem with them is that, while they lean Alternative, they still play acts like AC/DC, GN'R and Metallica ... makes for an odd mix with Death Cab For Cutie, Flobots and Paramore. I think they can ditch the former acts and be no worse for it.

WFNX is one of the best commercial Alternative stations in the country. Deep playlist, good selection of '80s and '90s tracks, and no tired Linkin Park. They're the kind of good, solid focused Alternative that never even received a shot in NYC. I feel that before Emmis gives up on RXP, they should ditch the trucker rock and move in a direction closer to FNX. I don't see why the ratings wouldn't be far superior to what they're doing now, which is a failed attempt to capitalize on PPM.

NYC has a predictable classic rocker (Q), a tired chicken rocker (K-Rock), and a kitchen sink format that will play Sheryl Crow, AC/DC and The Ting Tings in a half-hour interval (RXP). The first serves its purpose and gets decent ratings - the others are extremely unfocused and receive very poor ratings. Neither should give up on doing a Rock format, but they will only continue to fail if they continue doing the same thing they've done all along.

I agree 100% on FNX. Though I'm actually ok with Linkin Park on alt stations (they're one of those acts that are safe for both formats), I love the station. Indie 103 in LA is a bit too niche targeted while FNX isn't afraid to play most of the currents on the Alt chart (save for the trucker rock that we could all do without) and plays interesting recurrents. BCN in Boston is pretty much boring AOR with an alternative flavor (they play about 1-2 currents an hour). AAF is the Active Rocker that could actually work in NYC.

FNX sounds great, I agree. But, in my opinion, K-Rock 2, their online stream sounds even better. I would love to hear them put that format on FM.
