York Revolution baseball will be huge, for the city, the county, the fans, and any businesses that tie-in with it, including WSBA. York’s hunger for minor-league baseball has whipped into a frenzy since Lancaster got a team and only gotten bigger since ground was broken on the new ball park. Nay Sayers be damned! If the Revs do half as good a job promoting and marketing the team as the Barnstormers have done, there’s not gonna be a seat available in that ball park. And people in the stands are gonna be carrying radios tuned to WSBA.
The O’s haven’t had a good season in what, 8 or 9 years? Advertisers, like fans, like to be with a winner, and unlike the Mets of the 1960s, the O’s haven’t become “loveable” losers. Major League Baseball on radio has been on deathwatch since baseball went to cable TV. Used to be, baseball was worth 2 or 3 shares in the spring book. Today fans can watch virtually every O’s game on TV. Rumor has it that WBAL is iffy on keeping the O’s. WBAL! Yet who would have thought a year ago that KDKA in Pittsburgh would dump the Pirates?
I worked for WSBA for 9 years in the 80s and they never did anything that they weren’t 100% sure would increase the bottom line, either in terms of sales or community presence. Some of the same people are running the show there now, even if Cumulus is on the letterhead. Does anyone really think they went into this without a damn good reading of the market, the goodwill, the profitability of this? I’d be surprised if the first season isn’t already sold out.
As for WOYK, they’re in the enviable position of having two major league teams fighting over them. Either would be a good choice but the Orioles must have a radio presence in this market. For all-sports stations, the commitment to major league ball still makes sense. Vince knows the score. WOYK will come out of this better than before.
Baseball fans, there are some interesting times ahead.
