WSBA-York Revolution

WSBA-AM 910 has become the first radio home of the Atlantic League's York Revolution, scheduled to start play in 2007. They will broadcast all games live, and in their entirety according to the press release. Raises a few questions: 1)What happens to the Orioles play-by-play, on WSBA for a very long time. 2)Will this affect Cumulus' other York stations WSOX, WARM, and WGLD(which according to the FCC site, has been granted a STA to erect a temporary antenna to broadcast from while a permanent tower is built).

I think that a call in knitting program will be more exciting than an Orioles broadcast. If they want to broadcast a Revolution game, I think the idea of broadcasting the home team getting a home run, much less a base hit will be a refreshing change.

Kind of like WHP broadcasting the first few years of the Senators, and (whomever) doing the Barnstormers. I'm sure the rush was to beat out 1350. The 910 signal is pretty weak at night, and there's rumblings 1090 won't be the 2007 Orioles home.

Sorry guys and gals, but the O's haven't had a winning season in a long time and while watching the Tigers-O's game and seeing all the disgusted fans walk out over an owner who won't budge and explore options of picking up free agents or trading people.

IMO, WSBA made a smart move. Dump a loser and win LOCAL fans. WSBA needs a new midday program too BUT that's another thread!

Here's what I hope they DON'T do, hire the Senators' play by play man Terry Byrom(?), he is audio sominex!

The Score:

Revolution 1
Orioles 0
Save: WSBA (1)

W: Revolution fans
L: Peter Angelos

It will be interesting to see if the O's end up anywhere in York next season. Possibly WOYK. A lousy Orioles team is still probably easier to sell than a winning Phillies club in the White Riose city.

I'll agree with that! I think the Revolution will be exciting. Hopefully they'll name a good manager. I've heard two men could be eager, Yorkie Butch Wynegar and Connecticut Defenders manager Dave Machemer. Maybe even Rick Wise from the Barnstormers.

York Revolution baseball will be huge, for the city, the county, the fans, and any businesses that tie-in with it, including WSBA. York’s hunger for minor-league baseball has whipped into a frenzy since Lancaster got a team and only gotten bigger since ground was broken on the new ball park. Nay Sayers be damned! If the Revs do half as good a job promoting and marketing the team as the Barnstormers have done, there’s not gonna be a seat available in that ball park. And people in the stands are gonna be carrying radios tuned to WSBA.

The O’s haven’t had a good season in what, 8 or 9 years? Advertisers, like fans, like to be with a winner, and unlike the Mets of the 1960s, the O’s haven’t become “loveable” losers. Major League Baseball on radio has been on deathwatch since baseball went to cable TV. Used to be, baseball was worth 2 or 3 shares in the spring book. Today fans can watch virtually every O’s game on TV. Rumor has it that WBAL is iffy on keeping the O’s. WBAL! Yet who would have thought a year ago that KDKA in Pittsburgh would dump the Pirates?

I worked for WSBA for 9 years in the 80s and they never did anything that they weren’t 100% sure would increase the bottom line, either in terms of sales or community presence. Some of the same people are running the show there now, even if Cumulus is on the letterhead. Does anyone really think they went into this without a damn good reading of the market, the goodwill, the profitability of this? I’d be surprised if the first season isn’t already sold out.

As for WOYK, they’re in the enviable position of having two major league teams fighting over them. Either would be a good choice but the Orioles must have a radio presence in this market. For all-sports stations, the commitment to major league ball still makes sense. Vince knows the score. WOYK will come out of this better than before.

Baseball fans, there are some interesting times ahead.

The only logical choice for PBP is Curt Hart. Bring him back from the midwest. And work on a deal to get Brooks Robinson to do color.

Orioles' owner Peter Angelos has just about ruined a ballclub with a storied past. The last time the O's were in the playoffs was 1997, under the managerial direction of Davey Johnson. Angelos chased him away after both became involved in a verbal battle in the newspapers. This club hasn't called up any stellar talent from their farm system every three years, as is the formula in major league baseball.

The fans are disgruntled and want something new. WSBA will not become involved with anything unless it's worth doing and doing it right. Previous promotional oriented managers at AM 910 did this the way it should be done. One writer correctly stated that the Orioles should maintain a presence in the York market, due to the large percentage of fans the area sends to the inner harbor. However, many other stations in the York market have far worse signals than WSBA. Some of them are fortunate to reach six or eight city blocks! Frankly, some of these stations don't have nearly enough $$$ to air major league baseball. They're small time operations and sound as such with the signals they project and talent they employ.

The York Revolution should do quite well for the greater York area and WSBA's audience as well. The fans always wanted minor league baseball back in the "White Rose City" and now they have it. Let's move forward and stop the bickering.

AllHart whose in the South!

By the way...WSBA first aired the Orioles in 1988, but let's not talk about that season.

Now, that is hilarious! Remember, some people out there are nothing but "egg suckin' dogs."

I TOTALLY agree!!! There should be a serious public-relations campaign to bring Curt back to Central PA and back on the air with WSBA. Heck, Curt BUILT the sports programming on WSBA, only to have it destroyed by the previous ownership and management.

Let's hope that they get Curt back to hear a) him doing Revolution games, b) doing high school football and basketball play-by-play again, and c) hanging up on Michigan Mack on Sportstalk again!

Tell me someone - ANYONE - who doesn't miss hearing Curt on the air in York! He may be from Bugtussle, KY originally, but he's definitely part of - and should be in - Central PA!

WSBA is dropping the Orioles after 20 years to become the Revolution's flagship. That was important enough for the Baltimore Sun to report last weekend.

Coincidentally, Orioles great Brooks Robinson is an advisor to the Revolution.

Any truth to the rumor that the Harrisburg Senators are having financial problems and are up for sale? Will this be a moving sale?

They are up for sale. I believe a stipulation in the sale is that the people who buy the team must keep them on City Island.

I wonder how many players would miss the mayflies.....

According to a press release, the Orioles are going to be at Heritage Hills Monday to make what the release described as a "major announcement." Not sure what qualifies as major, but I suppose it could be the announcement of their new York radio affiliate.

I've learned the reported news conference at Heritage Hills to announce a new radio affiliate in York County for the Orioles was postponed recently...??? Reportedly, details are being worked out between the O's and supposedly AM 1350.

If WSBA was really smart, prior to opening day, they'd have a Sports Talk reunion at the new stadium. That would be blast. The press it would create would be amazing.

Curt Hart NEVER did anything for WSBA's ratings. NEVER! He told everyone he was number 1, but someone looked it up and guess what? Yep. His ratings were pathetic. If you're going to bring back Curt Hart, then bring back Ralph Lockwood. Now there's a real ratings killer and the main reason WSBA's ratings are as low as they are. Hal Raymond would turn over in his grave. Curt Hart......give me a break! He had a small, but vocal group of Sportstalk fans. The key word is SMALL.
