WTOB Beach & Oldies back April 1st.???????

buy an HD radio. Oldies 93 is still on, but now on WOLF's HD-2 channel.

it doesn't have live dj's (or even voice tracked), but it's not bad. sometimes it can be a little stale. randall bliss (he was the pd of oldies 93) runs it. it's certainly not a huge priority for them, but it's nice to have oldies.

or if you're close to lexington, WLXN 1440 and their FM translator at 99.9.

WTOB has a ton of potential. but alas.

I picked up WTOB just after 4 PM just south of Greensboro yesterday (4/4) and it was very strong. Must have been the rainy cold weather. This morning it was not there. Everything I heard was from about 1958 - 1962. The music was good since I haven't hear it recently but I couldn't take a steady diet because it sounds too old for me. As radiorealtor said previously it might appeal to 70 year old listeners. And I'm not sure who was on the air. It sounds almost like it was recorded, no time or anything which would lead me to believe he was live. He only mentioned the call letters once or twice.

And Amos, I appreciate you posting the WTOB link and letting us know about alternatives for oldies, but why buy an HD radio to hear oldies 93 "if it sometimes sounds a little stale". If you're going to play content which is over 50 years old, it IS stale.

Been out of State for 2 months in Florida, but the New WTOB is absolutely horrible.. Engineering is awful..The jocks suck, no news.. It's a play house for wantabee DJ's I listened this morning to 3 hours of hits from 1955! God, I don't remem ber one hit from 1955 as there were no rock stations.. Total disaster! No Spots either!

bob, i only meant to let you know that you won't find the same personality oldies outlet that the original oldies 93 was. as far as the 50+ year old product, i don't here many titles that are pre 1963 on oldies 93. most of what they play is the more expected 60's and 70's oldies.

now 1380 is a different animal all together. in the newspaper they said their playlist would consist of 250,000 titles. some people actually think that's a good thing. the top 2500 hits for the last hundred years??

Hey Bob...anyone who is giving these guys glowing reviews has to be associated with them. And yes, in hindsight there are probably plenty of daytimers in the sticks that are far superior and they probably are pretty humble about it and don't have legendary call letters that they are blaspheming.

BTW...when's the next lunch. I need to get some dental work done and don't want that to hamper my ability to chow down on some Q!

Rick

AMOS!

You're Famous................Happy Birthday in two days. Maybe WTOB will put you in the birthday club drawing for a cake from WalMart!

I suspect this Dushee guy is the same guy tooting the horn on the WTOB Good Guys Oldie site claiming that all the kids like the 50's music..blah blah blah.. He got into a heated conversation with a couple of old jocks and even claimed that all PAMS Jingles were in public domain and they could use anything they want!! NOT! Anybody knows JAMS Bought all of PAM Stuff.. I stomached all I could take of the morning show.. I have heard Earth Angel every day and this morning they were playing 16 Ton's Tennessee Ernie Ford! No if ands and buts.. They stink!

True, Ape. I have not listened to them since last week's Earth Angel Marathon. At least three or four versions in a row of some really bad song from the 50s...it may not have been Earth Angel but it might as well have been. I only listened for the same reason people slow down to look at car accidents...just to witness the disaster. And no, don't even try to air the old PAMs material without a relicense from Jon Wolfert.

"Earth Angel" and "16 Tons". I may have to try this station but I'm out of buttons. And I hate giving up my classic country when I am in the area.

I keep sampling WLXN and what they call "oldies" is "Just What I Needed" by The Cars, "Lucky Star" by Madonna and "Heart of Glass" by Blondie. Now while it is true those were popular when I was in college and they are quite old, that's just not what I think of when I hear the word "oldies".

On the other hand, WLXN also plays "Brandy" by Looking Glass, "Magic Carpet Ride" by Steppenwolf, "Do It Again" by Steely Dan, and "Taking Care of Business" by Bachman-Turner Overdrive. These aren't what I'm looking for but they're more like what I call oldies.

They lost me after about 2 days.. One reason is you cannot drive over a mile without the signal dropping. They were much better off the the old days with 5000 watt non-directional daytime and 3 tower directional at night. the pattern now absolutely stinks and so does the programing and engineering.. ::)

Lively conversations regarding WTOB and "oldies" in the area. I agree that WLXN is not really an oldies station and is using the Dial Global "Kool" format that has musically changed dramatically in the past year. There is room for a good oldies station in the Triad since Majic 94 found God and departed the format. Think Gig Hilton should have left well enough alone and kept the format alive in the area. Seems WTOP feels oldies are really a handful of really old song played over and over and we know how that works!

Reminiscing is fun but WTOB has not been WTOB for more than forty years. Why would any sane person believe a station owner in 2013 would or even could muster the resources to make any music format work on the AM band? Driving from Cary to Thomasville last week I made it a point to listen to WDNC, WPTF, WPCM, WSJS, WEGO, WTOB. And you know what? I give them all credit for trying. WDNC had a decent local sports morning show competing with Mike & MIke on FM. WPTF was putting out as good a local news product as any on the dial AM or FM. WPCMs mix of beach and oldies was different, fun, and very local to Alamance county. I heard a fair number of commercials (always a good sign) on WSJS and a pretty good execution of local news and talk with none of the talk superstars. On WEGO I heard nothing but PSA's and talk shows that were too far right for this Republican but I give them credit for trying harder than WPTI-FM. And WTOB was old, sloppy and unpredicatable....exactly what made me smile and keep listening. Come on guys get over yourselves. These operators are climbing a steep incline with no certain future for all their efforts. They have overhead, license obligations, payroll and debt services you webcasters don't. If you think you can do AM better go ahead and buy yourself a stick and get going. They are for sale all over the place for less than the price of a townhouse. What's that you say, you wouldn't take the financial risk? I rest my case.

Trying to compete with the FM's with an AM signal is difficult however the "boomers" were use to the AM signal but those signals seem to have fallen by the wayside. WTOB and the others will have a real hard row to hoe to overcome the FM competitors not to mention the big guys. There will be virtually no regional nor national business so any revenue growth will have to come from the local community and that in itself will be a headache. I admire the changes these operators are taking but fear it will be a major stumbling block as time goes by.

Folks, it all starts with compelling programming; giving the listener a great package of entertainment that is distinctive enough from their competitors that people will want to tune in and be a part of the audience. I admire anyone who can muster the creativity to present such a show on any band. However, I don't admire anyone who simply keeps the meters wiggling with amateur programming. Those are the people who do a disservice to the AM band and to radio as a whole.

WLXN plays "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" which to me still sounds weird on an "oldies" station.

Yesterday "Heart of Glass" (a song I heard a lot during my first semester in college) was followed by "Hold the Line" (the first song I remember hearing on my roommate's radio, when I still had a rommate).

Closer to home, another station which I thought was oldies but has a recorded voice saying "classic hits", plays "Africa" and "Mickey". It wakes me up each morning because that was an easy station to find when I was looking at night. Most mornings they have local news rather than music and on Sunday there's a talk show. I also heard "Dream Weaver".

This isn't WLXN but somehow it wouldn't surprise me if they did this. I wouldn't have expected "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" but that woke me up Saturday morning ... actually, I was already awake.

The one other station I could depend on that time of morning has one of those narrow-minded preachers who expects you to believe as he does.

So what's your point?? If it wasn't WLXN, why say it wasn't? Who was it..Most preachers DO expect you to believe as they do!
