WTOB Beach & Oldies back April 1st.???????

None of this makes any sense.

"You're In My Heart" (WTOB surely does this, or is that too extreme?) was on the station that doesn't have the preacher. I don't know whether I'm back on that station or not. The new radio goes up to 1700, while the old one only went up to 1600. That made the station easier to find. Both sttions have the same newscaster who talks to us like we're five years old. If the person who died was 51, he'll say five-one after 51.

"La Grange" was on WLXN. That's a long way from what WTOB is playing.
 
I finally figured out how to get back on the right station. The signal just isn't clear now, even after sunrise. And yet it had to be clear before sunrise when I switched radios. But the signal on the old radio that apparently goes up to 1600 is so much better for the Mike Huckabee station. I can't understand a word Huckabee says on that new radio.

Strangely, the man's no longer doing the news when the new clock radio comes on. I keep hearing "We now join Rick and Bubba in progress". That's better than local news read like we're five-year-olds. It's probably time to take this to the oldies board: I'm sure I heard country music, not oldies.

But on Saturday it was "Fire and Rain" or something by James Taylor. Surely WTOB is playing that.

I can't help it. This is fun.
 
WTOB is all over the place musically. They could have been playing Fire and Rain. The station seems to lean black but its a musical mess, a programming mess, an announcing mess, and numerous posters have commented on the poor technical/audio quality. I keep going back hoping they will have at least addressed the technical stuff but probably they don't have the money to do it. While I applaud the attempt at localism, it is so poorly executed that it will surely die.
 
I have to totally disagree with the last posters comments about WTOB-AM 1380. I am a radio vetern of many years, and I find myself listening to WTOB ALOT and I really like what I hear. I think that they are doing the right thing by playing a huge playlist of Oldies. I really enjoy hearing all of these fantastic songs again. Also, during the recent storms, they were the ONLY Piedmont Triad radio station that I heard doing extensive LIVE updates and warnings from the National weather Service. Sadly, most other radio stations in the Piedmont Triad are bland, with very small playlists- very Cookie-cutter if you will. WTOB-AM 1380 is NOT afraid to be LIVE and LOCAL almost 24/7. I find their Disc jockeys to be VERY entertaining and well spoken. I see that WTOB is developing quite a large following again in the Piedmont. Also, I find their signal GREATLY improved and STRONG!! I picked up WTOB clearly this weekend when traveling from Winston-salem to Burlington, NC!! The WTOB signal was coming in brighta and clear! I see a VERY bright future for WTOB!! I really feel that it is the BEST radio station in the Piedmont Triad!! www.wtob1380.com.
 
The only people who like a "HUGE" playlist are former radio people and Oldies "freaks". The general public
wants to hear a familiar hit.

The ratings and station billing will tell the story. I suspect it will not be a happy one.

However, it the operators are doing it as a labor of love, more power to them.
 
I very much DISAGREE with the statement that most listeners don`t like a HUGE Oldies playlist!! This is just WRONG in my opinion. In fact, I have seen SMALL playlists kill many Oldies stations and other formats as well. I can cite MANY examples of this. The biggest one is WFOX-FM 97.1 "Fox 97" in Atlanta which was a top 40 station until 1989 when they were top 40 and then went all Oldies in that year. They were VERY successful for many years with a large playlist. Then, in the early 2000`s, a new PD came in and stripped the playlist down to about 100 songs!! The station quicly died. Then, a new Oldies station came to town and did great with a large playlist. It is FANTSTIC to hear the very large playlist on WTOB-AM 1380!! They are giving the listeners what they want, and the station will do super!!

Like I said, the ratings and revenue will tell the story, unless WTOB is a non-profit station.

They carry my show, Saving the 70s, every night at 8pm. I'm pretty happy about that! ;)
 
Now that I finally got my clock radio not to play that preacher, I've got another preacher, or a religious talk show, on Sunday morning. But on Saturday, I heard what I believe to be Mick Jagger singing the name "Angie".

Is that WTOB material?

Job listings this morning. Weird. I got job listings after my power apparently went out while I was in the mountains. The battery in that clock radio kept the alarm time, but the actual time has been six minutes off.
 
I was in Wston-Salem yesterdy and finally remembered to see what the station was doing.

"Charlie Brown" is at least familiar. The next song was also part of a very narrow playlist.

For comparison, the station my clock radio came on with on Saturday morning played "Simply Irresistible" one week and "Rock Me Amadeus" the next.

During the week in a restaurant, "Island Girl". On the two-year college's cable channel in the lobby of the building where that college's library is, "We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions", "The Boys Are Back in Town", and "You Don't Mess Around with Jim".

Someone tell me how WTOB is doing well.
 
I do a live show on my internet radio station weeknights from 9PM till 12AM called The "Nightlight" The show was picked up and aired by WTOB for about 5 weeks. Jerry Holt got upset with me because we were having connection problems with my internet stream connecting to their station computer. Since I live in Trinity, my studio is to far away to pickup TOBs air signal. We had about 40 minutes of dead air one night without me knowing it. Seems somebody with the station would have been listening to see if the hookup was successful. At any rate, I am told they want to pickup the "Nightlight" again but as of this post, I am still waiting to see what happens. One suggestion I would make to the station is to stream in STEREO on their web site instead of mono which is whats streaming now. Since TOB is directional and they cut their power from 5000 watts day to 2500 watts night, most of their listeners are listening to their stream. To me, it doesn't cost any more to stream in stereo then it does in mono. I'll keep you posted on what happens. Check out my show weeknights at www.ncirradio.com
 
Only one problem with that. WTOB is owned by Davidson Media who owns 25 other stations. Davidson leases out their transmitters and WTOB is being leased by Jerry Holt. I understand he's tried to buy the license but Davidson won't sell. But that's what I would do if I held the license to 1380 AM
 
Matt, your not a maniac at all. That's EXACTLY what I've done with my internet station. The greatest hits from the 50s to the 80s currently only plays about 900 songs. When I started putting together music for the station, I didn't go by just where a song was on the chart, but being in my 60s, I went for the most memorable songs in my era as a teen into the mid 80s when I left commercial radio broadcasting. Everything from Fats dominos "Blueberry Hill",to the Doobies "Listen To The Music" all the way up to Dan Fogelburg's "Leader Of The Band" My average listener is on for about 3 hours steady so I must be doing something right here. Remembering these great songs has been a challenge. But one that's payed off as far as listeners are concerned. By the way, word is that cars will come out in 2016 with internet radio in the dash!
