WTZN: Change Coming Friday

Would it be feasible to get the WBZZ calls back? I know they are taken in another station in New York, but do you think they could bring them back?

They'd have to buy them. With all the money corporate spent today, I doubt it'll happen anytime soon. The XRK calls went back to NYC's K-Rock because they were on the Cleveland K-Rock, both owned by CBS Radio.

I wish I lived in pittsburh so I could listen to the christmas music over the radio even that Im listening over the internet stream now but its cooler over and actual radio!! I think that in the history of radio this is the 1st station to play christmas music in the first week of october this is great!! :D They should just keep the christmas music all trough the xmas season.

Any chance CBS would put KDKA on fm to compete with WPGB?

No chance. They already beat PGB being on AM. Plus, if the move the station anywhere, they'd lose the KDKA call letters.

Information is moving so fast on the topic so pardon me if this hasn't been already answered, but do you think CBS had to buy out the rest of Paulsen's contract since they cut him short?

Oh, and one more thing, I agree with a lot of you, get new personalities for the new 'B94' a fresh start completely, maybe keep some of the oldies for a morning show but you got to start out fresh, market like all get out, and keep on your toes with the latest playlists, contests, etc.

Man, there has been so much activity on the pittsburgh board in one day than we have seen in weeeks. We are the most viewed board right now we need more frequent sudden flips......lol

To me, the problem with The Man Station was that it was recycling failures and trying to make them new.

Okay, I can hardly call the OVERALL careers of John Steigerwald and Scott Paulsen failures. However, WBGG tried in the "Man Station" format of sports talk radio to have these on and both didn't make it despite a lot of promotion.

Steigy just sounded too old and Paulsen sounded too weird. I like them both- I really do- but why would you think the same thing would work five years later?

Same thing with McIntire. The man has a bad schtick- Smart @ss Central. It didn't work on Night Calls- it didn't work at KDKA (ratings have gone up since he left 1020)- so . . . we think it will work at The Zone?

The only legacy McIntire will have is that he destroyed the political career of Bill Peduto.

The definition of insanity is to do the same thing and expect different results. That was exactly what "The Zone" did.

But to tell you the truth, with all the recycling of talent that goes on in Pittsburgh (we actually have a talk station- WPTT- that is 1995 WTAE recycled without the sports) are any of us surprised?

And we wonder why the youth of Pittsburgh leaves . . .

Every market recycles. Name recognition is a big factor in establishing a new station. Steigerwald had the visibilty of regular appearances on TV. I wouldn't have hired him because he's nothing but a nag, but that's in the past now. Paulsen obviously had success at DVE. Whatever small following McIntire had was based on anything but his juvenile attempts to be another shock talker.

For at least the 1,360th time, WPTT does exactly what it's supposed to do. It's designed to grab the niche audience that wants 1995 WTAE talk. With that crappy signal, its options are severely limited. If it didn't have Cullen and Hoerth, it would probably be hooked to a satellite all day because that's the only thing that would make financial sense.

Finally, the youth of Pittsburgh is leaving for better jobs or better weather, not because of what's on the radio. Let's not get ridiculous.

the old b-94 jocks are washed up. didn't they fire kerri griffith on star because she's a pain in keith's posterior? same with john klein? fired a while back? what makes anyone think these two will be back on a keith clark production?

a really good, fresh, CHR with good jocks is need to go up against KISS. Make that LIVE jocks as KISS has voicetracked dummies on all day. Give away prizes all day.

WKST has exactly ONE VTd jock, Shay Shay.

In regard to talent, if it IS a CHR being reborn on 93.7, I know of several people that would immediately apply...

If B94 does return, I'm sure it'll initially pull strong numbers. Eventually though, Keith Clark & Ryan Mill who will probably be running it (again), will eventually become complacent (again) and run it into the ground (again). IMO, I say bring in new talent along with NEW MANGEMENT to make a run at Kiss-FM.

I doubt that'll happen though...The CBS execs are too stupid to see the obvious.

True, but Pittsburgh recycles too much. Recent example, when Kerri Griffith left Star, who was all brought back as part time? Ally, Dave, and Nick Zopolis (Ron Man never left). People Keith Clark knew who were just hanging around.

B94 needs new talent.

I ride my motorcycle to work so very rarely do I get to listen to Pittsburgh radio anymore. Over the weekend I was in the car with my wife and she had on Star 100.7 and they were playing a Green Day song from the 1990s that had to have swear words bleeped out. I thought it was sort of weird but didn't think twice about it until just now reading about the demise of The Man Station, it was a horrible format from day one, with Dennis Miller the only bright spot. I hope if they bring back B94, which I won't listen to anyway, that Star 100.7 turns into a K-Rock Active Rock type station. Since losing K-Rock I get really bored with The X and virtually no other choices.

Happens everywhere, especially these days when most radio jobs aren't paying that much. People aren't going to relocate for what's being paid. So you go back to people who are in the market and maybe have another job at the same time.

It may happen everywhere, but that's not what they should do.

Is anybody reading all the dumb sh*t on pitts-urgh.com. Some people are so stupid.

Yeah it looks like a teenie bopper chat room

OR - they end up learning that the one week they were Christmas gave them the highest ratings they've ever had. They become Santa 94. We leave our Christmas trees up year round.

Boss, Boss, Boss, Boss, Boss . . . .

Name recognition is overrated and here, it was a proven flop.

Again, I like Steigy- but even when he went away from sports as a topic- what was he going to say on 93.7 that he hadn't said a thousand times before on the Nightly Sports Call?

Besides, 93.7 had name recognition already with its syndicated package.

The "name" recognition of Paulsen, Steigerwald, and McIntire was "they never made it as talk show hosts." And that was before The Zone even started!

It would have been more cost effective, and more cutting edge, if CBS went to Point Park, Duquesne, Pitt, and wherever else they have a college radio station and said- as Reggie Dunlop said to the Hansen Brothers- "Show us what ya got!"

Could that have failed any worse than 93.7 did? No. The Man Station will go down as perhaps the worst flop in the history of Pittsburgh radio.

And you probably would have found some diamonds in the rough!

I know, I know. "How would a 22-year-old relate to a 35-54 male audience and blah, blah, blah."

But if you wanted to relate to the 35-54 male audience, then why did you have on Loveline and O & A?

Couple of other notes-

The same "go see what the crazy kids at the colleges are doing and see if any of them want jobs" strategy would be cost effective and work at WPTT as well.

WPTT is bad and everybody knows it. Hoerth is out of ideas and needs to make the shift to oldies DJ if he can't afford an outright retirement.

Cullen needs to become a political activist or something. Even her fans are saying she's lost it.

Their ratings are always somewhere around a 1.0. Am I really a cockeyed optimist to say that I think the best and brightest of the WPPJ staff (Point Park radio station) could do a better job for less money?

Finally- you missed my final point entirely.

It was that in all too many industries in Pittsburgh, be they broadcasting or otherwise, a young graduate cannot find a quality job, as you alluded to.

I do not believe it is because of the weather.

I believe it is because of an old union mindset that tends to either keep on or fail to motivate deadwood employees, and at higher costs, thus eliminating opportunity.

You proved it in your above post. "Steigerwald, Paulsen, and McIntire were hired because of NAME RECOGNITION!"

The Man Station didn't need name recognition. They needed good talk show hosts, and there was significant evidence these three weren't even before the station went on the air.
