WWFA St. Florian on the air

WWFA 102.7 FM licensed to St. Florian (transmitter in Muscle Shoals) signed on the air yesterday. Currently stunting with wall-to-wall Triple-A and a good dose of Classic Rock artists like Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd, and The Allman Brothers Band thrown into the mix.

The debut is the first new addition to the Florence-Muscle Shoals market since WMSR moved into the Shoals in 1998, and the first major change since WLAY-FM moved to 103.5 in 2006.

WWFA is owned by Dr. George S. Flinn, Jr. of Memphis, who also owns WHBQ and numerous other stations. He's obviously using an out-of-town voice guy for the ID's. Voice guy says "Saint Floor-e-an" when it's actually pronounced "Saint Floor-reen". :)

No word yet on where the studios will be located, who will be on the staff, or even how the station will be positioned since there is no station imaging being aired save for the top-of-hour Legal ID. But for now, the music is doing a pretty good job of promoting the station by itself.

It's been on the air since Saturday night, and has a great signal. Since the station is definately stunting, I can't help but wonder what the actual format will be. I'm thinking oldies since there is no oldies competition, but since the calls are WWFA, i'm also thinking that they may try a sports format since the FA in WWFA could possibly stand for "Fan."

Flinn owns a station in my small Mississippi town. It's dark. :D

He seems to do okay with his FM stations around Memphis, but the AMs don't ever show up in the ratings and his TV stations seem to exist solely to show infomercials. Hopefully he has a better go with this station than he has around here.

Flinn Broadcasting MO is to LMA the station to a local company.
He only operates his cluster around Memphis.
LMA's everywhere else.
Pretty smart business move.

Listening to it right now in NW Madison Co. first found it this morning on the way to work with a decent signal all down old railroad bed rd, hwy 53, and research park blvd. and thought i was listening to WEGR Memphis until it didn't fade out when i went over the big hill on 53 that usually kills all distant signals. I'd like to see it stay classic rock, or something close, since WVNA-FM moved to rock, and WTAK over here is just god awful. What's on it now is somewhat reminding me of 92 ZEW in Mobile.

@ Zach, That must be Flinn's station in Grenada.Tough radio market, too many signals for that small town..

You are correct. We have two local signals and about seven truly usable commercial signals in total that carry Grenada advertising, so it's pretty well sewed up. And that's not including the four or more fringe signals from Tupelo or Batesville that waft in.

Flinn's station here, WMUT, is probably the smallest of all the regional stations coverage-wise, but it DID carry an unduplicated format during its LMA.

He'll lease it to you. What in the world would fit? Anyone there doing K-Love?? Bet he stepped up to the plate when he bought it in the auction.

No one's doing K-Love. We have Jimmy Swaggart on one channel and American Family Radio's two services spread out on about three or four more, plus French Camp Academy's indie station.

I'm not in the business and wouldn't know the first thing about running a station, but I'm sure K-Love would do well here. The previous format of WMUT was some flavor of Hot AC.

I'll have to check 102.7 out next chance I get. I'm interested to see how far into Madison county their signal can get and still be listenable. I'm a bit surprised that WWFA isn't interferring a bit with WEUP at 103.1 with them being 2nd adjacent and both full power FMs with service contours overlapping as much as they do. I thought 2nd adjacents contours couldn't overlap that much but I will admit I don't know everything there is to know about the technical side of things like this so I could be wrong. If it's not a problem, then maybe WEUP outta look into moving 103.1 a bit closer to Huntsville if it won't cause problems with 103.5. I'm sure they would jump at the opportunity to better their signal in the metro and I see nothing else that would stop that move.

It's strong enough at my house in Toney to cause massive interference to my part 15 signal when i hook the outdoor antenna up, looks like if i ever decide to bring my station back online i'll be going 95.7 only. 102.7 was the best frequency for a part 15 here, nothing on it for 180 miles, except a 300 watt in northwest GA near Chattanooga and a pirate that popped up every now and then around Decatur. So WWFA has nothing over here to interfere with it except a translator for WEUP on 102.9. I haven't drove around much other than to and from work, the signal for the whole drive is about the same as from WBPT from Birmingham, some static and dead spots, probably enough to make the average listener change the station, but i have a very high tolerance for static so "listenable" to me is completely different than for most.

I'm praying for Classic Rock as well. I quit listening to WVNA the day they started playing the new stuff.

One thing i forgot, WEGR was always be the first station that would pick up here any time there was any DX going on, driving home today I noticed more static and bits and pieces of Rock 103 cutting in. If it goes classic rock, I DEMAND it be put on a translator in Huntsville, lol.

It has a fair signal in Cullman. It's sandwiched between The Bull 102.5 and Mix 102.9, so there is a lot of interference from those 2. I can hear it a lot better in the truck than at home.

For those that can't hear it, here's what's been played since 7pm when i started checking (still stunting with no IDs except top of the hour)
(songs ID'd with Shazam on iPhone, times are not exact start time)
7:10 - Sheryl Crow - Redemption Day
7:14 - Matchbox Twenty - Disease
7:18 - Albert King - I'll Play The Blues For You
7:25 - U2 - I Still haven't found what i'm looking for
unidentified song
7:33 - Ray Charles - Hit The Road Jack
7:35 - CCR - Down On The Corner
7:37 - Paul Simon - You're The One
7:42 - Beatles - Two of Us
7:45 - Doors - Love Me Two Times
7:51 - Junior Brown - Jimmy Jones
8:00 - Don Henley - Sunset Grill
8:02 - Junior Brown - Monkey Wrench Blues
unidentified song
8:12 - Bodeans - Can't Stop Thinking
8:16 - Melissa Etheridge - Like The Way I Do
8:22 - Rod Stewart - Reason To Believe
8:27 - Junior Wells - Give Me One Reason
8:33 - Bruce Springsteen - Backstreets
8:39 - Jeb Loy Nichols - As The Rain

I've heard everything from Bob Marley, to Pearl Jam and Red Hot Chili Peppers, tons of Allman Bros and Bob Dylan

The page on radio-locator for WWFA is now showing that it's on air, but the signal pattern is still unavailable

I could also be imagining things, but the top of the hour ID sounds like a different voice now, but it could just be the fact i got rid of the static by trimming the tree by my antenna back. maybe we're getting close to an actual launch here.

I wasn't hearing things, the voice is different, and is pronouncing it as "St. Flor-een" now. Only place I seem to lose the signal entirely is on Research Park Blvd around Blake Bottom Rd, where for some reason I lose every weak signal for about a mile, while in direct view of the Drake Mtn towers.
