While an "original" "unique" blended format is what we all were hoping for we all knew in our souls that it wouldn't happen. For those of us who were in radio or those who still are, keep in mind its BROADcasting and the industry has to cater to the masses. I liked 102.7 with the hodgepodge "mutt" AAA format they were playing. I think we all did because it was so "original" and "unique".
Every radio station is cookie cutter, but we all know its not paint by number either. I also recall the talk a PD had with me when i first got into radio many years ago. I hated the format I was on and wanted to bring in my own records, and sometimes did sneak some of them in and on the air. That PD taught me that the art of radio is not playing what you want, but to play what your target audience wants. We all need to remember that. I was stuck on a country station for several years in Florida (Miserable at first) but my audience never knew I didn't like the music or format. A programmers, producers, imaging directors, jingle makers, copywriters job is to create the goop that holds it all together.
I found the DJ tonight to be definately not like any other jock around here. He was exciting to listen to and had something to talk about other than liner card stuff. He kept it tight too. Did anyone else call up? I did and he put me on the air, (well about 20 seconds out of a ten minute conversation). He led me right down the path on the phone and I didn't realize it. About five minutes after I hung up, I heard myself on 102.7 welcoming him to town. Good job to the people behind the new station. Best of luck to everyone at the new Kiss FM.
