Yeah, after all, it couldn't have been the fact that other stations changed formats and stole 3WS listeners. And it couldn't have been the fact that she hasn't been in the driver's seat long enough for her changes to have made an impact. And it couldn't have been the fact that overall the audience for oldies is just getting tired of the same old songs over and over and over.

No, from the comfort of his cubilce in Detroit, Oldies Cat has hit the nail right on the head. We should all bow to his out-of-town wisdom, as he knows much better about Pittsburgh than those of us who actually live here.

After all, who would know more about what Pittsburghers like, people who live here, or some DJ who lives and works in Detroit?

No attempt at genius at all- just trying to stir up the frozen souls of tweedle-dee and tweedle-dum (LOL) You know who they are.

November monthly

Don't bother trying to wake the dead. 3WS may have had a bad November, but they'll have a good December. Then, they'll come back from the holidays playing even more '70's and '80's than before. Then, the ratings will go back down. Then, they'll move the oldies (excuse me, "your greatest hits") to 104.7, and put the news/talk on 94.5, like at least one of the "tweedles" wants to do. Then, they will be able to kill off 3WS (or whatever's left of it by then) without much complaint, because it'll be mostly dead already. I hope I'm wrong about this, it's a shame to see a successful station go south, but even WCBS-FM didn't get saved and CC has blown up a lot of other oldies stations lately. G'day.

> No attempt at genius at all- just trying to stir up the

That makes sense. No matter how many people you get listening to the oldies, they tend to be "oldies" themselves, and advertisers just don't seem to want to reach older listeners all that much, not even when there are lots of them.

I guess it doesn't matter how good your ratings are if your billings aren't all that good. And, I'd guess that it wouldn't matter how bad your ratings were if your billings were good.

Maybe what makes a station a "success" has more to do with making money than with just attracting listeners.

I wonder if that might be the effect of Christmas music, instead of the new PD.

Just a theory, I don't know for sure. 3WS starts Xmas pretty damn early.

Remember, the Nov "monthly" actually starts closer to the last full week of Oct

(actually, I'm just kidding about all this blaming the new PD stuff- gotta make sure I tweak the two Pitt village idiots a little)>

It seems like they started Christmas music right after Halloween.

Maybe Tim Burton's movie wasn't a fantasy, maybe it was an accurate prediction.

The mind boggles!

Enjoy yourself while you can. The Oldies format is dying on the vine, and will soon join "Easy Listening" and reruns of "The Shadow" or "The Bickersons", and you'll be on the outside of the industry looking in. Or, if you're lucky, working night time nostalgia shows on AM stations after they drop to four watts. It won't be long before your name will be prominent on the "what ever happened to" radio forums.

OldiesCat-

You really don't know anything about radio, do you? The monthly you are talking about has nothing to do with "the new chick" as you call her.

The monthly perceptuals could be the worst due to the effects of YOUR friend, the worst Program director and manager EVER, Greg Gillespie. They wouldn't be doing Christmas music if he didn't put a fight to their salespeople and his GM and actually fought for the station.

And, as I had pointed out in countless posts to you, the "man" didn't even know what music fit his format. Putting in slow, boring songs on what was once (and could and will be again) a staple jukebox of 60's & 70's songs, was the death of 3WS. He made it into DVE really, really Lite.

They started fixing the problem when they fired his ass. Now, give Ms. Van Dyke the courtesy and lay off of putting blame or anything her way in terms of the ratings of your failed friend.

Give her a chance. From what I understand, the staff is 100% behind her, as well as the salesstaff. There is a lot of manure she's digging 3WS out of, courtesy of your friend, their former program director.

Mr. Music

Careful- at least I'm STILL IN RADIO and not a bitter, ex-radio hack who can do little but criticize the great industry he (she) obviously couldn't cut it in.

Two things:

1) Apparently most of the audience loss was to DVE

2) Penguin hockey, when they're bad, hurts 3WS. there wasn't any last year, so their numbers were up over the comparable period for the previous couple of years. Look for CC to jeetison that contract when it's up... wouldn't be surprised if the Pens had to take the radio in-house and buy the time (assuming they're even in town).<P ID="signature">______________

There is a general correlation between attracting listeners (in the right demos) and making money.

Exactly! And older people who are less likely to respond to advertising to get them to change brand names or to switch to a different store isn't one of those "right demos" you mention. Sure, older consumers spend lots of money, but reaching them is often done more effectively through media other than radio.

So, even if an oldies station attracts huge swarms of oldies fans, those old fans are growing into the "wrong" demographic.

Not always true. I'm in the older demographic and my last 4 cars were all from different manufacturers. Not only that , when I completed my sex reassignment, I started shopping in completely different stores. As a dude, I never shopped in NY &Co. or Ann Taylor. Now I do. Just because you are over 50, doesn't mean you're
static. I'm always willing to try new products. Max Factor instead of Aqua Velva. I have a professional job, to go against stereotype, and I am expected to present professionally. Different hair stylist , nail salons, and on. But as usual, bet I still get no response from even this.

My favorite music types are Doo-Wop, Solid Gold Soul,Jazz, folk, bluegrass,
country and classic rock. I never listen to show tunes. Sorry. I especially
like Doug Hoerth's show when I am in Pittsburgh on business. I guess I should like "Lola" , "Walk on the Wild Side",'Dude Looks like a Lady",and "Get Back" by the Beatles
>

no more than an anecdotal conclusion- you are highly unusual.

If your hypothesis were true, why have oldies stations almost NEVER had any P-1s under the age of 40? Even oldies stations who perform well 25-54 have about 75% of that listening in the 45-54 portion of the demo.

Plus, your screen name sort of gives your bias away.
