The Mexican family in Monterrey has had stations for something like 70 years. They have a nice cluster in Monterrey today. But there is no way they are leasing it for less than costs. They mustve seriously come down on the lease fee... theres no way this guy is blowing $1 mil plus a year on lease fees. The family that owns 1090 no longer has a US station they own, just some mexican ones too.
I know i read somewhere that the lease was $100,000 a month. The Mexican family in Monterrey has had stations for something like 70 years. They have a nice cluster in Monterrey today. But there is no way they are leasing it for less than costs.
It was never leased for $1 million. My wife was on-air at XEPRS in the 70's when it was Spanish in the daytime and, later, fulltime. The operator, Teddy Fregoso, was a friend until his recent passing and I'm aware of the costs... about $25,000 a month plus the costs of the transmitter site including staff (required by law then), maintenance, taxes and utilities.

Im sure the costs went up in the last 40 years
Remember when I said "Wolfman Jack 24/7"...maybe it's about to happen!🤪$25,000 ... $100,000 ... even higher? Even if it was the same as 40 years ago (wishful thinking), at the going rates for radio advertising in the San Diego market -- and with the fact that this is a standalone AM running a less-than-mass appeal format, and has just gone on the air with no track record of results ...
... that would already be a lot more advertising than I expect this to be able to sell. Adjust to what we think the actual lease is (fun fact: even $25,000 in 1984 is over $75,000 today, so figure $300,000+ if what Paul remembers the higher figure to be is correct) and this thing should be gone before you have time to say "Tina Delgado is alive ... alive!"

An AM in San Diego is nearly worthless. One in Tijuana is worth even less.I know i read somewhere that the lease was $100,000 a month.

Based on my radio's signal strength meter, 1090's signal strength tends to go up and down. It's on the low side today.BTW, the 1090 signal quality is very poor this morning. Must be running on reduced power.
I'm wondering if they even have the permission of Brian Ferguson, Charlie's son and administrator of the estate, to use his late father's voicetracks at all.
In fact, I now wonder if Wolfman Jack's widow Lou Smith is getting any money from this venture either.
I have no idea who has the legal rights to The Real Don Steele's intellectual property since Shaune passed away ten months ago.
Wolfman recorded all of his shows on 1/4" reel to reel tapes in his Hollywood studio and sent them down to the XERB transmitter for broadcast that night. At one point the tapes then went to XERF for broadcast a day or two later. It wouldn't surprise me if he used virgin tape instead of recycling the old reels. I wonder how may survive today?God bless Lou (Mrs. Wolfman). All those old tapes are financing the rest of her days.
Maybe it's part of truly giving the listener a 'retro' experience. Taking you back in rime before the internet, streaming and social media. Sort of like a radio time warp. Life before 1980...🤔No streaming yet I asked El Chingon about that . He said it could happen but did not give a definite answer.
