X(E)PRS has changed again (or is stunting)

When I consider what the expense is just to broker the time, I sometimes if "24 hours" is eventually going to be all the time he has left.

They mustve seriously come down on the lease fee... theres no way this guy is blowing $1 mil plus a year on lease fees. The family that owns 1090 no longer has a US station they own, just some mexican ones too.

Wonder what kinda deal he has going on and why the spanish catholic stuff left so abruptly

The Mexican family in Monterrey has had stations for something like 70 years. They have a nice cluster in Monterrey today. But there is no way they are leasing it for less than costs.

It was never leased for $1 million. My wife was on-air at XEPRS in the 70's when it was Spanish in the daytime and, later, fulltime. The operator, Teddy Fregoso, was a friend until his recent passing and I'm aware of the costs... about $25,000 a month plus the costs of the transmitter site including staff (required by law then), maintenance, taxes and utilities.

I know i read somewhere that the lease was $100,000 a month.

Im sure the costs went up in the last 40 years

$25,000 ... $100,000 ... even higher? Even if it was the same as 40 years ago (wishful thinking), at the going rates for radio advertising in the San Diego market -- and with the fact that this is a standalone AM running a less-than-mass appeal format, and has just gone on the air with no track record of results ...

... that would already be a lot more advertising than I expect this to be able to sell. Adjust to what we think the actual lease is (fun fact: even $25,000 in 1984 is over $75,000 today, so figure $300,000+ if what Paul remembers the higher figure to be is correct) and this thing should be gone before you have time to say "Tina Delgado is alive ... alive!"

Remember when I said "Wolfman Jack 24/7"...maybe it's about to happen!🤪

An AM in San Diego is nearly worthless. One in Tijuana is worth even less.

So, if we establish the value of the station (without the value of its real estate) based on potential cash flow, I'd say that 1090 AM is worth around $2 million. And that is being generous.

If you rented a $2 million dollar home, you might expect to get $6,000 to $8,000 a month. So my guess on the radio station would be between $6,000 and $10,000 a month plus all expenses for transmitter maintenance, power, land taxes, etc.

If they are paying more than that, they don't know what they are getting themselves into. Based on their programming ideas, I'd say that they are clueless.

$100,000 a month was the lease rate for XHPRS-FM when BCA was leasing it as Max 105.7. After the owner dropped BCA for non payment, that was eventually dropped to as low as $20,000 a month when unable to find a new operator. I suspect in the year 2024, the rate for an AM is definitely less than 20k. I know someone who worked at BCA during that time, and that's what I was told.

I'm wondering if they even have the permission of Brian Ferguson, Charlie's son and administrator of the estate, to use his late father's voicetracks at all.

In fact, I now wonder if Wolfman Jack's widow Lou Smith is getting any money from this venture either.

I have no idea who has the legal rights to The Real Don Steele's intellectual property since Shaune passed away ten months ago.

Art’s eldest son Daniel here. I administer the estate of Charlie Tuna and all his legacy voice tracks with help from my brother Bryan on socials and web. We are restoring his tape archives and excited to see what happens next at XEPRS. No further comment from me at this time. ;)

No streaming yet I asked El Chingon about that . He said it could happen but did not give a definite answer. Also anyone notice signal problems again? He also told me that they would be going to 24 hour oldies but that has not happened yet. There was Spanish language programing from 9 to noon today. El Chingon was not on his usual shift on Monday anyone know when he was on?

God bless Lou (Mrs. Wolfman). All those old tapes are financing the rest of her days.
Wolfman recorded all of his shows on 1/4" reel to reel tapes in his Hollywood studio and sent them down to the XERB transmitter for broadcast that night. At one point the tapes then went to XERF for broadcast a day or two later. It wouldn't surprise me if he used virgin tape instead of recycling the old reels. I wonder how may survive today?

Maybe it's part of truly giving the listener a 'retro' experience. Taking you back in rime before the internet, streaming and social media. Sort of like a radio time warp. Life before 1980...🤔

Minor correction: They were recorded one evening, and broadcast the next night.

Wolf did the show in real time, starting at whatever time the show was going to start the next night, so that you could call in. It got a little confusing at times for the listeners, who were hearing Wolf talking on the air and to them on the phone, but he'd just tell them to turn it down.

From what I was told, there was no recycling. The reason Wolfman Jack has been able to be in syndication for so long is that nothing was recorded over and the tape was fresh, having only gone through one or two (during the time when they were being sent from XERB to XERF) plays before coming back to L.A. and being stored.

Starting Monday according to El Chingon oldies going to 24 hours
Marc Paskin is the person orchestrating the station. El Chingon works for Marc.
The 24/7 format actually launches a day later than you wrote (Tuesday 11/5/24)
