Alt 92.3 to Become WINS Simulcast

there are 3 or 4 urban stations with dismal ratings, one can take the format and do it right, but is it taboo to flip an urban format for fear of protests...notice a country and rock station bit the dust, the country with better ratings then the urbans.....
When urban formats are formats targetting groups who have been ignored I get why people would be upset. However the urban stations here are all different.

lack of lifestyle compatibility.
Exactly. Country, just as most genres are, is also a lifestyle/aesthetic. An aesthetic that is nearly non-existent in NYC. Don't think most New Yorkers resonate with an overwhelmingly conservative genre/aesthetic.

I wonder if Beasley is buying a station in NYC at some point? Also to note 99.5 WBAI was off the air today. Maybe someone will buy it and put rock on it?

Country needs to change it's tune quite literally racism isn't okay and it never was. Keeping artists like Morgan Wallen on after what he said and the lack of diversity is an issue. Hell even rock has a diversity problem.

It’s FAR from taboo. It’s called ‘does it make business sense.’ And right now, blowing up an urban that still bills well for a format that’s done poorly in the last two attempts is NOT smart business sense.

Urban stations flip all the time. KYW-FM was an Urban station. WMRQ in Hartford flipped to Urban and then flipped back to Alternative a few years later.

I suspect Brady will be fine unless Audacy decides to scrap its remaining Alternative stations (other than L.A. and Dallas) en masse.

I will say this - I'll be somewhat surprised if Alt 98.7 in Detroit is still around in another couple years. I think WWJ will receive an FM home prior to the 2024 Presidential Election.

Beasley is in big financial trouble and laid off staff in four markets last week. So no on them buying stations.

WBAI has a message on its website that they're doing transmitter maintenance. So no to that too.

Unlikely that any major group would buy a stand-alone station in NYC.

Country is an almost entirely non-Hispanic white format. How is that supposed to change? Diversity is acceptance of different races, cultures, ethnicities and gender identities, not the adoption of the cultures of one by all the others.

WINS Press Release:

Ben Mevorach has been elevated to Vice President of New York News and will oversee both 1010/92.3 WINS and WCBS 880.
Ivan Lee has been promoted to Brand Manager of both stations.

The consolidation of 1010/880 operations due to a new SAG-AFTRA agreement is mentioned (as pointed out in Post#154 and others above - Tim Scheld, News Director of 880 is leaving).

The current 92.3 format will move to 92.3 HD2. (as mentioned above)
No announcement as to where "New Arrivals" (currently heard on 92.3 HD2) will land.
(HD3? Audacy app only?)

What usually happens with a format shunted off to HD2+:
it'll be there for 6-24 months and then when it becomes just a jukebox and a financial drag for the operator,
it gets terminated from the airwaves (possibly to continue on an app).

At some point in the not too distant future, I think the "WCBS Newsradio 880" brand will go away. Either 880 or 1010 will ditch all news programming in favor of a much lower budget format - probably until the frequency Audacy views as the least valuable of the two can be LMA'd or divested. It certainly would not surprise me if a trimulcast of 880, 1010 and 92.3 were to occur at some point in order to escort 1010's listeners to 880 & 92.3 or 880's listeners to 1010 & 92.3.

There will be parallels to what happened in Los Angeles a number of years ago to KFWB.

Major kudos to Brady, by the way! I loved the emotion and devotion he expressed during his announcement. The FM airwaves need many more broadcasters like him.

I will also compliment Audacy for allowing the truth to be told the audience for a change, unlike the disrespectful manner in which they handled the changes involving KMPS (Country) in Seattle and Amp Radio 98.7 in Detroit.
