It won't be easy to attract new affiliates without a solid programming schedule. There are six series returning for the 23-24 season, but Nexstar has said it wants the budgets for new series to be lower than they had been. Then there's the Writer's Strike. How far has production gone for the fall season? If the strike continues, will there be enough programming to fill the time?

Posted about this in the CA TV state thread, but no surprise seeing a small TV owner in a big market cashing out to a TV monopoly. Looks like the CW is leaving KFMB's 8.2 subchannel to KUSI although would Nexstar think about switching things up & making KUSI the FOX affiliate while KSWB becomes the CW. For cord-cutters there, it'd be an upgrade in regards to FOX.

Prediction to FCC: Can Fox Corp buy KSWB and maybe Tegna might switch CW8.2 into MNTV? I know duopolies are not allowed in SD because they have 5 commercial tv stations?
They should call it UPN.
Like the last time before they became CW. Then stations like KBCW and KMAX can use their early 2000's branding. However this is not likely to happen given the current environment to push the Paramount+ app.

Sounds like some wishful thinking from the CEO. They have lots of holes in their schedule and a writers strike to deal with.
The Sacramento example where KTXL is a primary Fox Affiliate managed by Nexstar and KMAX-TV Sacramento is losing their CW affiliation because it's managed by Paramount.
“The good news is that we have multiple expressions of interest for affiliations in virtually every market,” Sook told investors during an earnings call Tuesday morning. “In fact, in a couple of markets — it is too strong to call it a bidding war because the discussions haven’t progressed that far, but we have multiple expressions of interest.”

WHAT A LINEUP! The RF spectrum is pretty full here in Seattle, but with KSTW dropping the CW I'm totally going to request a new low VHF allocation so I can file for it and get the station up and running in a few months to take advantage of this quality programming. I think RF-2 is open! I will contact that California FM to see if I can use the call letters KSEA-DT. Coming soon, KSEA, Seattle's CW 2!

Forget the TEGNA stations. They've historically said NO to the LIV too
In such cases MNTV might join KFMB 8.2 so does WCCT 20.1
In 1969, independent KCIT TV 50 came on the air in KC - they carried a lot of the network shows preempted by the ABC/CBS/NBC affiliates in KC.
As I understand the network TV program situation, if an affiliate doesn't want to air a network show, it's offered to the other commercial stations in the TV market (hence the starting schedule for KCIT had a lot of current network shows, I didn't realize that the KC network affils preempted so many shows).
Maybe dropping CW affiliation allows the former CW affils to pick and choose which CW network shows to air in addition to syndicated programs and local news.
