The new KROI/KTHT changes thread

You are correct - a "Network Affiliation Agreement" was put in place for EMF to operate KXXF prior to closing.
Original sale announcement was 5/10/2023 with the format change on 6/1/2023.

I could definitely see EMF getting an LMA for KTHT, but I'm pretty sure SBS usually waits for the sales to close so they can kick their formats off
General market operators tend to look with disfavor at LMAs for non-English operation by the buyer as it makes having "positive control of program content" difficult and / or expensive.

Not if it’s going to be Ritmo 92.1, I keep saying it. It will try playing Salsa and Merengue first!
The name has nothing, necessarily, to do with the format. "Ritmo" could cover any up-tempo Spanish language music format, including cumbia and sonidera.

Whatever they play, it will not be anything that doesn't appeal to Mexicans. This isn't the old days of SBS where Don Raúl Alarcón played whatever he wanted in LA. And the truth is that the market is mostly Mexican and salsa and merengue does not appeal to that sector.

You can't build a station on Katyzuela alone.

That was one reason MEGA TV failed here in Houston.

Maybe it'll pull a KXOL and go CHR leaning AC.

KXOL is hardly AC. It is reggaetón and rhythmic based. It's the Hispanic equivalent of the Urban format.

Here is the top 20 list from the last week:

GRUPO FRONTERA & BAD BUNNY
KAROL G & SHAKIRA
FEID
YNG LVCAS
FEID & SEAN PAUL
KAROL G
RYAN CASTRO, PESO PLUMA, SOG
MARSHMELLO & MANUEL TURIZO
MYKE TOWERS
REMA & SELENA GOMEZ
ROSALIA & RAUW ALEJANDRO
CHAYANNE
BIZARRAP & RAUW ALEJANDRO
RAUW ALEJANDRO & BIZARRAP
SHAKIRA & BIZARRAP
BAD BUNNY
DADDY YANKEE
EL ALFA & PESO PLUMA
PAOPAO & JAY WHEELER
FUERZA REGIDA & GRUPO FRONTERA

Ah, I assumed since Omar y Argelia came to KXOL from K-LOVE, KXOL would be AC. I also could possibly see Omar y Argelia being picked up by KROI if Rítmo will be Tropical leaning Urban.

MEGA TV always was the fifth wheel amongst the full power Spanish language stations in Houston, and light years behind. I’m not in the target demographic, but their programming seemed to resemble what you would find on a Spanish language LPTV here, not one of the big players.

I’m really curious as to what SBS will launch on 92.1…a direct competitor to an existing format in the market, or something surprisingly different.

I'm guessing also, BTW, that the deal to sell Mega TV will also lead to another deal that's been widely speculated. If that deal doesn't happen, it makes me think the other one won't either.
Paywalled, but does this article have something to do with what you think will happen? Can Mega TV Buyer Save Americano Media? | Radio & Television Business Report

Americano Media provides programming for WAXY 790 in Miami, which is a Spanish language conservative talk station, strongly reflecting the Cuban diaspora’s anti-communist sentiment in South Florida. It also has a news website. Voz Media is buying Mega TV, and now Americano Media. Sounds like they want to be a right-wing counterbalance to Latino Media Network (LMN now owns KLAT, with new programming to launch in early 2024.)

More on Americano Media: Americano Media - Wikipedia

I would assume Voz Media would want a Houston radio affiliate, as expansion is discussed.

As a reminder, the SBS deal to buy KROI may possibly hinge on the SBS sale of Mega TV to Voz Media actually closing, which would provide the funds to buy 92.1. Of course SBS might be able to get a bridge loan if that separate deal hits further delays.

I guarantee you that is squatting with a photoshopped logo. If KROI were going for a rhythmic Reggaetón format they would have copied WRMA's "street graffiti" logo rather than one for a failed station in Puerto Rico.
Did you tactfully confabulate with your legal counsel before offering such a cavalier oblation to us plebeians?

If you are referring to "Estereotempo", that was not a "failed station". Its network was in the top 3 or 4 stations from the earlier 80's well into the 2000's when new ownership decided they needed a refresh and, in the process, killed it.

Then again, we aren't 100% sure if KROI will be going for reggaetón. It could be even cumbia as David said.

He's referring to Rítmo 96.5.
And that one was not a ratings failure. It was the old Y-96 (which for a while I programmed), which tried an all-Dominican format. It got good ratings, but the ad agencies and their clients had a perception and a prejudice: a feeling that Dominicans did not have purchasing power and a prejudice in general, pervasive in Puerto Rico, against Dominicans.
